  1. doh! that’s something i’m guilty of! our handyman laughed at me cleaning behind him this past spring during our kitchen reno. i couldn’t stand the mess!

  2. I have been to heaven! I was able to visit THE CONTAINER STORE in Washington State! What a treat! Now I need to find one close to my state! SMILE!

  3. That’s funny. When you had us to the monthly makeover in our bathrooms, I bravely cleaned out my husband’s drawers and put things in baskets. First thing he said when he opened his drawer was “Now I won’t be able to find anything.” 🙂

  4. You are definetely brave, my husband would bury me in the desert if I touched his tools. I am constantly and compusively reorganizing every other area in the house and it drives him batty, but God forbid I touch his precious tools. I envy your bravery, LOL.

  5. Laura…you and I must be on the same wavelength today. I started straightening DH’s tools about an hour before he got home from work. I thought that would be enough time to finish it. WRONG! That wasn’t even enough time to “get started”. When he got home and found out what I was doing, he sat and stared at me and said “don’t throw that away, I might need that” & “where did you find that, I’ve been looking for that”, LOL. I just replied “it was hard to find…it was under the old spark plugs you pulled out of your truck ten years ago…lol… Anywho, after all was said and done, I got a big kiss and a thank you 🙂

  6. Sadly I tried this trick-he takes the basket or box or whatever I put his tools in and takes it back to the shed. Rather than but them away, he leaves them in whatever I put them in. Now my shed is filled with little boxes and baskets and he screams even more that he can’t find anything-oh well at least we try.

  7. I’ve done the same thing, but I used an orange pail (kind of Home Depot color). Now I just say “orange bucket” when my hubby is looking for the duct tape!

  8. I’ll bet you also take the tools he’s working with and put them in their proper place…poor man trying to find the hammer…he just put it down…it was just here a minute ago! 🙂

    he he he

  9. I love this! I would just adore getting my hands on my husband’s tools. Or, the whole garage, for that matter. But, it’s his domain. Given that he’s given me free reign in our entire house, I figure that’s fair.

  10. My husband keeps his tools everywhere, and mostly in Walmart bags when he’s working on a project. They tend to then get left on the garage floor, or the trunk of a car. He has a great multi-drawer Sears mechanics tool chest, but it’s always overflowing with everything. Any ideas how to organize him? I’d so appreciate any help! I even spent one Saturday trying to straighten up the mess but it turned into another mess about a week later. (Sigh…)

  11. Okay I think I need to be more specific here. My hubbie has a workshop in the basement which is his domain. I don’t touch that area out of respect for him and I never have to go into it if I don’t want to.

However once he moves into my territory all gloves are off 🙂

  12. My husband is working on our kitchen & has a tool bag there, but still leaves the tools out “so he can find them”! After he leaves for work, I “clean up” and put them in his bag… “Honey, where’s my…?” 😉

  13. Your post totally inspired my latest project “Tackle It Tuesday” (as seen on 5 Minutes for Mom) where I organized hubby’s corner of the basement. It’s amazing how they can NEED something they didn’t even know they had! I forgot to take pictures of the Before (grr), but I am posting the After on Tuesday! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂

  14. We have a basket (star shaped!) with those “most used tools.” Really it started as me asking for a set of tools from the bin so that they could be accessible for hanging pictures and fixing things while my partner was at work. Then our bedroom was 2 floor away from the tool bins and with my bad knees there was no way I was making that track every time I needed a hammer. I put my tool set in the star basket and it lived on a high shelf in our room, just barely within my reach but out of the way, and I can’t tell you how wonderful it’s been to have a little set of tools easily accessible at all times.

My partner once asked me why I needed 6 baskets from the thrift store, and I just giggled at him. It only took a couple weeks before he started shopping for baskets with me! Now in our current home we’ve gotten so used to counters being cleared up right away that HE would be the one looking for a basket to keep the tools in before he even starts. Once we get the garage cleaned up I think he will get used to putting things away every time pretty quickly.
