If only suitcases could unpack themselves….

Good grief!

These are the suitcases I came home with. Can anyone say shopaholic? I’m figuring that I’m going to be unpacking for days considering I have three major things working against me:

a) I’m lazy

b) I took this picture this morning….now it’s evening and so far all I’ve done is pull out a few necessities like my new menu planner

c) I have to re-organize everything in order to find homes for all my new things (which is good in the long run but it sure does take awhile)

Yep, I’m definitely going to be at this for awhile, what do you think? Any guesses as to how long it’s going to take me?

I’m not sure I’ll ever learn to pack light but a post by Professional Organizer, Monica Ricci, definitely gives me inspiration to want to try it one day. This fascinates me like you wouldn’t believe…I’m still not sure if I really believe it’s possible….wow!

  1. it takes me forever to unpack from being away !!!

I looked at the link you gave ~ I could NEVER take so little!!!

  2. I have Flylady’s unpacking technique. Before the last suitcase is in through the door, I empty the dirty clothes into the laundry and start a load. Put the clean clothes away, and everything else into a basket to be sorted and put away as I get time.

I reckon if you do that it’ll take no more than 3 days 🙂

  3. I’m with everyone else…hate unpacking!

I can’t believe Monica took so little on a week-long trip. I could never do that.

I completely organized my home office this weekend. You’d be proud! No photos to share, but in just 2 days since I completed the task, things are much, much easier! It was hard to carve out nearly an entire day to take care of it, but the results were well worth it!

  4. I hate unpacking as the rest of you, which is part of the reason I pack so light to begin with. (Ahhhh you see how it makes sense grasshoppah?)

I seriously have not checked luggage in years even when I leave for a week. I admit, I’m squeezing stuff into the nooks and crannies of my suitcase, but I’m not willing to risk my bags getting lost or stolen. I’ll follow up the rest of this on my own blog so I don’t write a 300-word comment here!
    Thanks,
    ~Monica

  5. I’m glad to see you all made it home safe and sound, Laura. Unpacking after 5 days is daunting never mind a whole month! Oh well, baby steps, maybe?

  6. Sometimes I’m tempted not to go anywhere for the simple fact that it means I will eventually have to “unpack”. Wish I could be more laid back about it all, but I can’t rest until it’s all done. Doesn’t matter if we arrive home at midnight…I just have to get everything put away.

  7. Seems the thing I have working for me is the fact that I can’t stand chaos. I’m sure that will be my driving force to “get her done”.

  8. Admit it, you buy stuff just to give you something to organize when you get home.

    I’ve got your number, sister!

  9. I know I’m almost embarrassed to admit it…he he. I can’t fool you guys, you are definitely on to me..lol!

  10. Just found your site, absolutely LOVE IT 🙂
I am also an organization “nut.” I laughed out loud at a lot of your post, I can totally relate, LOL !

  11. We just got back from a week long vacation and now I have to find places to put a few purchases as well as finish unpacking. It seems I am avoiding it by cleaning, running errands and blogging. LOL

  12. going away is the fun part, coming home and unpacking is the not so fun part. Good luck. Although I am sure you will be all unpacked by tomorrow!

  13. Ok…I just went and read that link for packing light, and WOW I could never do that! I admit, I always pack more than I know I’ll need, but it helps to be prepared, right? LOL You should see my carry on bag. I hate to be bored, so I carry on my Bible, a book, magazines, and a knitting project for good measure. The knitting project usually comes out, but then I spend the rest of the flight looking at the “Air Mall” catalog on the plane. LOL

  14. I always end up coming home with more “stuff” than when I left! Why is that? I’m sure I can find the same stuff at the store at home, but its always more fun to play show-n-tell with the stuff when you get back, LOL. Good luck!

  15. Laura, don’t feel so bad, I HATE unpacking too and usually drag it out until the last possible minute LOL

I have a favor to ask…I have TONS and TONS of recipes that I print out from the internet or that I find in cookbooks, I need a good system for keeping them at hand but not all over my counters….can you help this unorganized recipe collector??? LOL

  16. Welcome home. I must add that I LOVE the eagle creek packing folders that Ms Ricci uses. I think I bought one for myself about four or five years ago. Just one, for a city trip. My main reason was that I hate ironing and if you pack them well in those things you don’t need to iron them again. My mother, who travels for business two to three times a month, didn’t get my hints that she should really by herself one as they were so handy, so I bought her a set as a present for Christmas. She now is an avid Eagle Creek fan. I have also given a set to my husband and on her last birthday to my mother in law. These things are unbelievable. They reduce your packing volume, keep everything organised, and make it easier to unpack! I usually take along a plastic bag. When I go home I put unused clothing nicely back in the eagle creek and used clothing in the plastic bag. The contents of that bag gets dumped in the laundry basket immediately. The rest goes back into the closet. Ehm… that last might take a while…
