Quick Tip: Organized Elastic Ponytail Holders

The following is a guest post about organized ponytail holders from regular contributor, Rachel at Useful Beautiful Home.

This is a quick minute or two transformation that I instantly loved. It’s easy to get caught up in the typical before & after results from large organizing projects and miss the beauty in simple everyday changes. A tweak here and there around the house to make life more efficient is equally as rewarding!

We have a narrow, awkwardly sized vanity drawer due to the bathroom sink pipes. My daughter uses the drawer to hold her brush and elastic hair ties used for ponytails, braids, etc. It has served us well for those dwindled down few elastic bands we had remaining from last year. (I will never understand how we lose so many of those little things throughout the year, lol.) Headbands and bows still stay organized HERE.

However, when Santa filled her stocking with a fresh pack of 100 ponytail hair ties, the drawer looked chaotic. On her own, she kept trying to organize little piles of similar colors but, naturally, when the drawer would open and close, the piles got jumbled. I didn’t mind the mess behind a closed door, but I knew it bothered her.

So, I pulled out my trusty Command Hooks and got to work. I installed three on the inside of the hairbrush drawer. Truthfully, I wasn’t about to purchase matching hooks, I simply used the mis-matched ones I had leftover in my stash. It worked out to two medium sized hooks and one larger hook. Ideally, three of the larger sized hooks would work perfectly to hold a pack of 100 skinny elastic hair bands (just a courteous FYI).

After I installed the hooks, I let my daughter arrange the ponytail hair bands however she wanted. Of course, the larger hook got the prized pink and purple elastics because, well, it’s my girlie-girl doing the arranging. :)

Short and sweet. Easy and simple. But, don’t miss the big picture! Little changes add up to helpful clutter control. Before and after shots don’t always have to be a major overhaul. ;)

We put ours in plastic snack size baggie’s. We can sort by size since we use the big thick ones and the small skinny ones.

I keep mine around a larger pill bottle. I threw out all of the stretched-out ones that should have been gone long ago, bought a pack of new ones and wrapped them all on the bottle (it’s wide enough that they do not need to be doubled). When I want one, i pull it off the bottom. They still disappear (no idea where those babies end up) but there is never disarray in the drawer. At least not from pony-tail holders.
P.S. I keep bobby pins inside the bottle, also very handy.

I use a carabiner. I keep small bands on one and larger bands on a larger hook.

Found solution on pinterest and love how it works. Easy to find, easy to access.

I use shower curtain rings to organize mine.

I keep a couple of each color in a cubby in my jewelry box and the rest on carabiners in the bottom drawer. When one color gets stretched out or lost I can easily locate the color I need and add more to my quick grab stash.

I keep all of mine on a caribiner. I try to keep them in color order – but when they get returned, that may or may not happen!

I like your idea! When my daughter was younger, there were always ponytail holders everywhere.

We recycle candle jars from Bath & Body Works. The medium jars are a great size and they’re simple to clean & shine up. They work perfectly – they’re clear so you can see what you’re searching for at any angle and they have a lid!
