So here’s the thing. Depending on the size of your closet you may not have the room in there to store either your seasonal clothes or the clothes you are hanging on to because they are the wrong size. And yes I know this is an issue for many people. I’m not going to tell you that you shouldn’t keep these things but I am going to suggest that we not give these things prime real estate space. You shouldn’t have to dig through clothes that don’t fit or that aren’t in season just to find something to wear in your closet. You want to be able to find what you need when you need it which is why it’s important to keep clothes you don’t wear regularly out of the way.
I’m going to give you a couple of options for separate storage however if none of these work for you and your closet is bursting at the seams then this is when you really need to buckle down and make the tough choices whether or not you can hang onto something. Remember my rule of thumb:
Whew glad we got that out of the way 🙂
So if you are blessed with a large closet and have room to store clothing for the various seasons together then this post is not for you. But what do we do if we have limited closet space yet want to hang on to our size 5 clothing even though we are now a size 9? Or what do we do if it’s winter and our sweaters are buried under our tank tops and shorts?
Well here is what works for me. I dedicate space in my closet in the corner of the top shelf. I just recently switched out my summer wear for my winter wear. These totes now hold my shorts and tanks until next year when they will be replaced with all my long sleeve shirts.
You can see the three totes I use in the top corner.
They are out of the way freeing up space in my closet for the things I’m currently wearing. This saves me time in the mornings not having to hunt and peck my way through stuff that is of no use to me in that moment.
Make sure to take measurements to ensure whatever you buy fits.
If you have a storage room or extra room in another closet, using totes to pack away the not needed clothes is something else to consider. I prefer clear totes but anything would work including cardboard boxes!
And if you are really ambitious this post on how to make your own storage shelves for your totes is awesome.
Do you hang on clothing that no longer fits for “someday”? How many wrong sizes do you hang on to?
Feel free to add other wrong size & seasonal clothing storage solutions to the comments. Thanks!

This is such an awesome post! Your closet looks so organized! Thank you so much for sharing my DIY Storage Shelves!
I use to have a wall of totes in my old house. I sure miss it!! 🙂
You have totally inspired me to get the under the bed organizers for my room. I have them in both my daughters rooms but not in the master bedroom. Space is a premium in our new to us but old home and we definitely do not have a large closet that happens when your house was built in 1860. I plan on heading out for under the bed organizers in my room tomorrow so that I can make the most out of my space. Thanks for inspiring me this morning!
Oh I love to hear that Annie! Hope you were able to find what you needed 🙂
I used to keep clothes that I hoped to fit into again someday, until I realized that when that “someday” came, the clothes would be out of style, and I’d be so excited to be back in that size that I’d want to celebrate with something new. In the meantime, I was wasting valuable closet space. Keep one fabulous piece if you need the inspiration, but give the rest of those wrong size clothes to someone who can use them now.
