Today is the day I’m going to ask YOU a question because I’m really stumped on this one and could use a little help here. Remember last year when I shared my inexpensive jewelry organizer with you? It’s been working great but now I need to know how I’m suppose to move it to another province without all my necklaces getting tangled up on me.
Do I leave them on the organizer or do I take them off and package them separately?
My girlfriend suggested packaging each necklace in it’s own Ziploc baggie although I’m still not sure if that would keep them from tangling.
Any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated!
(and yes I know this may seem like a lot of necklaces…it appears organizing isn’t my only addiction…I’m an all or nothing kind of girl what can I say!)
Update: See my solution here!!
Angie says
Snap a couple big loops of elastic around it to hold the necklaces close to the board and then wrap the whole things in plastic wrap! 🙂
Kate says
I agree with the previous comment – and I just wouldn’t worry too much – NOTHING ever goes perfectly in a move, so if the necklaces tangle, they tangle! you will have joy in touching them as you untangle them!
Cook Clean Craft says
I had a similar necklace organisation system, and when I last moved, the packers just wrapped the whole lot in paper, and placed it in a box. I think a couple of necklaces may have fallen off, but there were no major tangles to deal with.
Andrea says
I’d take a roll of saranwrap and wrap it up with it. Make it stand on the floor and someone holds it while you wrap away 🙂

I highly recommend this: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=14603565

I was going to suggest the cling wrap but someone already has. I think it’s a good idea and when you are done I would just cut it down the middle to unwrap it.
Or you could just give me your necklaces. Which ever is easier for you! LOL!

Nothing to add to the comments above – they are all right on. Good luck with the move.

My sister sells jewelry and she takes cheap panty hose and cuts it to length and slides the necklace in and uses tiny rubber bands on either end.
Brenda says
I worked in a Fine Jewlery Store for 28 years. We ALWAYS sent/received our chain style necklaces in individual ziplock bags. Just leave the clasp end out and seal the bag tight. You can then place all of the little bags in a large ziplock bag ~ to keep them all together. It will save you so much time and frustration. I can remember how embarrassed I was when I “didn’t follow company policy”. I “draped” 8 diamond pendants over my hand and took them down to their display case. By the time I got there, I had this huge knotted mess ~ that I had the privilage of unknotting!! By the way, the easiest way to unknot tangled chains is to use two straight pins and loosen the tangled mess. It is possible to do this, but taking a few extra moments in the beginning will save you so much time in the end. Good Luck to you!

The above ideas are cheap and great! I never would have thought of saran wrap!
I love my jewelry, and I make beaded jewelry, too. I’m traveling a lot this summer, so I bought this to take it all with me:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B000E3C3LC/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0?ie=UTF8&index=0
I love it! I only paid about $15 for mine. It has 4 little “drawers” that snap tightly shut, and little dividers inside. You can separate all of your necklaces, earrings (and beads) and they don’t get tangled– and they don’t slide around and get mixed up in different compartments. I put my tools in the top part, but it would be good for larger accessories, like maybe barrettes or headbands? I love it because I can haul all my beading projects and my finished work with me, OR I can just take one little drawer of jewelry for a weekend trip. Plus, they are clear so you can see everything without having to dig around.
Becky says
I second the ziploc baggies – especially the snack size. That’s how I organize my jewelry all the time and it’s great!!
Here’s a blog post where I explain how I did it (in case you need a visual):

Lisa says
I agree with Andrea and her saran wrap idea. It would have to keep them from tangling!
Sara says
When I take my jewelry to college, I use a spare embroidery floss organizer. A tackle box would work nicely too (if you know of any fishermen who have a spare!)! Anything with a bunch of little compartments! Happy packing! =)
Erotica says
You might get a large piece of thin art foam, lay them on it and roll it up as you go. Then you could simply slip a rubber band around that and put them in a suitcase and you’re done!
Peggy says
I second the art foam, you can use a towel too (more like a flour sack so there aren’t all the terry loops to get caught it). But just lay the towel out and set a necklace on, roll it up a little an lay the next one down.
Bunny says
Hold them to the board with rubber bands and place them on the side of a box that you pack with other items to hold the bottoms in place, maybe the picture frames and other items hanging on the walls (curtains as well).
Misty Bourne says
I love the saran-wrap idea. Honestly, that sounds easiest.
Although it did make me remember…when I was moving to and from the dorms every year during college, I cut up straws into 1-inch pieces and strung them onto my necklaces before putting them into an organizing container. The straws kept them from tangling on themselves, and the container kept them from tangling on each other. It seems a lot of work now that I think about it, but it would work if you ever had to tote only one or two necklaces with you (on vacation or something).
Good luck with this! 🙂
Jen says
I would also just wrap up the necklaces on the board (I did that for my last move). If you want to take them off the board wrap each one in a paper towel or kleenex, thats how I do it when I travel.
imalazymom.com says
How about you tape them down to your organizer thingy? with some masking tape or something?
What can I say… that’s the lazy way!
Visiting from http://www.imalazymom.com
Cara says
I was thinking the same thing! Painters tape wouldn’t do any harm to your jewelry.
Angie says
I would make sure they were all clasped and tie them all together with a few pieces of ribbon. That doesn’t sound right…I’ll try to explain. Take them all down and drap on your wrist. I would then take some ribbon and tie them together in four places. You might get a few tangled, but I’ve done it before and it worked well.
Tina says
I was gonna say Press n Seal to hold everything down. Lots of smart ladies on here!
Cara says
Oh yessss – Press N’ Seal rocks. I’d give that a try too!
Getting great ideas here Laura!
Brenda says
You can purchase jewelry organizers at T.J.Maxx and similar stores that hang up and zip across to hold your jewelry in place. These are very inexpensive and hold a lot of jewelry. Pick up the hanger and go. Just be sure to get the ones that zip ~ otherwise your jewelry will fall out if you pick up the hanger to move it.
Jen Wilson says
Maybe wrapping the whole thing in saran wrap?
Carol says
Laura,
You can purchase an adjustable “tackle box” from Walmart. It has adjustable compartments which would be great for necklaces. There will be no waste. You can re-use the box. My son uses one for “Flick Tricks” mini BMX bikes. Here is an example of one. http://www.buytackle.com/product_view.cfm?id=23240.
Good luck with your move Laura.
Samara Link says
Actually wrapping the whole thing in saran wrap is a pretty good idea. That cling wrap isn’t eco-friendly though, but sometimes it’s worth using just a little. 🙂 I was gonna say that it might work to use scotch tape to adhere each necklace to tissue paper. You could secure each one at the top and bottom of the necklace and then roll the tissue paper up. Then, put all your tissue paper rolls in a large freezer bag or tupperware bowl with lid for transport. Good luck with the move!
Pam says
You could also wrap the board in a sheet. I’d fold it wider than the board and then you can use rubber bands on the ends tightly in case something falls off. That will keep it inside the sheet.
A lot of scrapbook vendors at the big shows would wrap their displays in plastic wrap or bubble wrap to avoid taking lots of things off of it. Makes a big difference in time there both coming and going.
Johannah says
A lady I know puts all of her necklaces in ziplock bags, but she slides a straw onto them and it keeps them from getting tangled. It works wonderfully!
amy jones says
I will second, third, eighth? the saran wrap idea but FIRST I would fasten the bottom end of each necklace with a pin. Happy moving!
Chrissie says
Well, I am SUPER cheap and lazy too, so I would for sure wrap the entire board in some cling wrap and hope for the best. But when my hubby and moved over seas last year I obviously couldn’t pack something as big as that board in my suitcase. I only had about 15-20 pieces and I cut a cereal box into rectangles. I then cut slits in the top (shorter part of the rectangle) and pulled my necklaces onto them. Each necklace got its own, sort of like what you might see when you purchase a necklace on a cardboard/plastic hanger. You could also cut squares and punch your earrings through. Like I said this might not be ideal for your move as you have a nice selection of jewelry there. But this might be a quick idea for traveling with just 2-5 necklaces if you don’t have a nice jewelry travel bag with little compartments.
Deb says
Well, there are a lot of better ideas than mine here, but the first thing I thought of was to zippy bags. Only not a sandwich bag, but those little tiny 2 or 3″ baggies you can find at the craft store. Then the necklaces wouldn’t move around too much and there wouldn’t be an annoying amount of extra baggie flapping around. Slide all the tiny baggies into a gallon baggie, and viola.
Carolyn says
Did not read all the comments but if I were moving, I would shrink wrap it like it is. Dollar Store has it for…surprise a dollar.
Good luck
tlmcl says
My mom packed up my grandmas jewelry after she died. She just took a sturdy box with a lid (it was a Schawn’s box, but a sweater box from Rubbermaid or your company of choice would work) and lined the bottom with tissue – flat, not crumpled – and laid the necklaces flat on the tissue – then did another layer of tissue – a layer of necklace, etc. The didn’t ever tangle. Good luck!
Pam D. says
You can buy the cling wrap at Wal-Mart in the home office section. It comes on a substantial size roll about 6-7 inches wide with a handle on one end. Use it to secure doors, drawers, etc. on smaller pieces of furniture. It has a multitude of uses now and in the future. Here in the states it costs approx. $8.00. That one roll should last a lifetime–it has I’m sure several hundred feet on it.
Pip says
I would take painters tape and tape across each necklace “group” kwim?
It won’t wreck them and will be easy to remove, but will keep them stationary and if they come off the hook they’re stuck to the board.
Then I would make sure it travels laying down flat.
Heather S. says
Painters’ tape to hold them all in place, and then stuffed into a great big envelope?
kimatsprig says
How about taking some cheap sewing pins and bending them into a v and pinning the necklace down to the organizer? You wouldn’t have to take them off and then re-sort, just remove the securing pins as you use the necklaces after you move in.
Kappi says
I would say leave them on the organizer and wrap lots of bubble wrap around it so the necklaces can’t really move! Then all you have to do is take the bubble wrap off when you get moved! Hope you figure something out!

Marie says
Hi! I don’t know if this was already suggested but I would just wrap the whole thing in plastic wrap then wrap in a towel before packing. The plastic wrap should keep the necklaces from shifting around. Best luck on your move!
kristi says
I don’t know if anyone has suggested this but what about that blue painter’s tape? You could tape each individually to the board and the tape would not stick to the jewelry.
Laura says
Everyone has really good ideas! Probably better than mine…but when I moved, I used an old egg carton. I wiped it out, then placed one piece of jewerly (or a set of earrings) in each egg spot. Then I placed one or two cotton balls over each egg spot, to hold the jewerly in place and I wrapped it tightly in saran wrap. It was easy to pack into a box – the egg cartons were just placed one on top of the other and viola they are packed. I don’t recall having any problem with tangled necklaces though I am sure it could pretty easily happen. It just seemed that with the cotton balls and the wrap, they were pretty secure and didn’t move around too much.
Tanna says
Great ideas by everyone! I would just use that blue painters tape, because it would come off easy. I like the saran wrap idea too. Either of those ideas and just store the board up right in the box off to the side and pack stuff in with it.
Alex M says
Shrinkwrap — or the poor girl’s version. Tightly wrap the thing with clear plastic wrap. The use clear packing tape to seal the edges. Wrap in newspaper or a thin layer of foam for protection.
monica jensen says
my idea would be to leave it as it is, and take masking tape or painters tape and go accross the board a few times, maybe so each necklace is held down twice, then “wrap” the board in paper or fabric and place flat in a box if possible, maybe at the bottom of a box of linens something that will also hold down the necklaces without causing damage or moving the necklaces!
hope it works…
Jessica B. says
I went to the hardware store and bought the roll of saran-wrap like stuff that movers use. I wrapped it all around my necklaces and their storage piece. Nothing fell off, nothing tangled.
Meegan says
I echo several other suggestions – saran wrap the entire board, then you don’t have to get out tons of little baggies and bag and unbag and rehook your necklaces. I would just saran wrap the board, and perhaps then pack it between some towels or blankets. Good luck!
Charity Wilt says
Laura, you could always use clear packing tape and drape across longways across the strands; once in the middle, and again at the end of each row. That way you can keep them hanging and they won’t get tangled and you don’t have to take the time to hang them back again. Hope this helps! 😉

One idea is to go to your local liquor store or grocery store and get those empty wine boxes (these are the ones that have multiple bottles divided by those square seperators within the box). Next, you can take those dividers and either use nails or hooks on the top of those dividers and in this way your jewelery will not get tangled and you have easy access 🙂
Laci says
My first thought was Saran wrap also. If anything is glass, you could surround it w/cotton balls using Scotch tape. Then wrap that whole puppy as is.
Saves time, no extra purchases, and it practically unpacks itself!

I’m getting ready to move halfway across the US and I’m using saran wrap. all of my jewelery are in hanging closet organizers. previously it was in an armoire and I saran wrapped it. Also once upon a time I had tons of dvds and cds in a tower…..you guessed it….i saran wrapped it for the move. saran wrap is a crucial moving tool!
Andrea says
I totally agree with this 🙂
I have moved 42 times in my life (not lying and I’m not an army brat) and the thing I like the most are saran wrap and bubble wrap.
I couldn’t move without it.
Marie-Claire says
Hi Laura! I like to bring along a bunch of different necklaces when I travel, too, and I use this trick. I take a sheet of tissue paper and lay a necklace on it, then roll a little bit, like a sausage. Then I add another necklace into the roll, and roll some more. Add a third, roll, and keep adding until you have a rolled up “tube”, adding more layers if you want more. Then, I fold it in half, or thirds, or whatever, and just pack it. Nothing ever gets tangled. I used to make jewelry for craft shows and I did this using felt for all of my handmade necklaces, and they always came out great, no tangles. The other ideas are great for moving your entire organizer, but this idea might help someone who is traveling and just taking along just a few.
Stacey C says
Tape! That’s what I did when I moved. I actually wrapped my chains around cardboard and taped them with painter’s tape so they would not get sticky! Good luck!
Ginny says
The secret to using ziploc bags is to leave part of the chain outside the bag. In other words, put most of the necklace in the bag, leaving an inch or so hanging out the top. Zip the zipper. No more tangled necklaces! It works every time for me.
Carmen@GetOrganized says
As a military wife, I have moved a lot! 13 times in the past 10 years, so I’ve got this thing down pat. I put each necklace in its own small plastic jewelry bag or small Ziploc bag, leave the clasp and a little bit of chain hanging out of the bag, and close the zipper over it. This keeps the necklace from getting tangled. But that’s not all you have to worry about!
Unfortunately, there are some bad apples out there and you also need to protect your jewelry from getting stolen by packers. (If you are not doing a DIY move, that is.) In order to protect against theft, I take all the little baggies of jewelry and hide them. An example would be putting them in some high boots, and then putting the boots in their shoe box. Make a note of where you stash them so you don’t forget!
Good luck with your move!
Debra Declutter Day Tips says
My suggestion would be to get a piece of cardboard and cut slits at the top and bottom to hang your jewelry. That will help prevent tangling and is a low cost solution to transport your jewelry safely. Placing the piece of cardboard with jewelry attached into a nice zip lock bag will also help to keep it in a safe place. Good luck with your move!

straws and saranwrap…..might be a little labor intensive but do it after the kiddies go to bed and you are trying to relax and watch the evening news….

Laura,
My first thought was Saran Wrap and it looks like I wasn’t the only one. I’d just wrap that board up good in Saran Wrap and call it good! Happy Packing!!
Rachel says
Lay them on a pillow case, alternating the “business ends”. cover with a few pieces of tissue paper, roll gently. Rubber band the ends and pack softly. Repeat.
Ashley says
Just ship them to me, on the organizer, and buy new ones! I will untangle them…and keep them! Hahaha. I think I would leave them on there and wrap them close to the board. Maybe plastic wrap. Let us know how it turns out!
Laura says
I recommend a sheet of bubble wrap or a sheet of foam and plastic wrap the whole thing. I move alot (military spouse) and am in the process of doing a move right now. Let me know what you end up doing! Good Luck!
Connie says
I don’t remember reading anyone suggesting this but put them in ice cube trays as best as you can not tangling them then wrap the trays in plastic wrap! It has worked for me 2 or 3 times now with no tangles.
Jenna says
I echo Brenda’s suggestion of small ziplock bags and placing those into larger ziplock bags. I work in a jewelry/clothing boutique, and this is the method we use for backstocking our jewelry. It is also the method used by the vendors who ship our jewelry. I’ll admit that I was sceptical of the ability of this method to prevent tangles but have found this not to be the case as long as the jewelry is matched with an appropriately sized ziplock bag. Bonus points if you group your indvidually bagged items into a larger bag by color and style. It makes locating that must have necklace so efficient. Because, let’s face it, unpacking your jewelry is probably not at the top of your list of things to unpack, and this storage method might last you a few days or more.
Angela says
You could save tissue and paper towel cardboard rolls and put one end of your necklace in the tube and then latch it and this will keep it from getting tangled.
Laura says
Oh my goodness such amazing tips, you gals are AWESOME! Definitely loving the saran wrap suggestions and will be trying that for sure. Thanks!

Hi, there!
We just moved across the country… I did the saran wrap thing to my necklace board (which is very similar to yours)… however, I used the newest variety – “Press N Seal” and it worked perfectly. When I unpacked, everything was in perfect position and undamaged. Good luck with your move!

I was thinking of recycling file folders and punching holes in them, top and bottom of the sheet to thread the necklace through, and piercing through earrings and holding them in place with their backers. Seems like it would work. We’re about to move too and after unpacking all my favorite earrings I’ve got to pack them all back up again : )
