If you are looking for Menu Plan Monday, it can be found here.
First of all a big thanks goes to Shannon at Rocks in My Dryer for hosting this little (ha!) blogging giveaway carnival!
I love love love giveaways and I’m soooo excited about this one. I’m all about creating “organizing junkies” everywhere and this definitely has the potential to do just that. Are you ready? I’m giving away not one but SIX one year subscriptions to the new ORGANIZE magazine!!!!
How cool is that! Organize Magazine is the first magazine dedicated solely to helping people tackle their organization needs. Readers will learn how to get organized in all areas of their lives: Home, Work, Time and Leisure. I’m still waiting on my first issue to come in the mail and I can hardly wait!
I was originally only going to giveaway one subscription but when I told the nice people over at the magazine what I wanted to do they graciously offered to include 5 more subscriptions for 5 more lucky winners! I am so excited that I almost attempted to breakdance but that would have just be wrong on so many levels so instead I ran around my dining room table doing what could only be called the funky giraffe…not to be confused with the funky chicken of course!
However, there is a catch….you didn’t think I was going to make this easy for you did you? As you know I’ll be going on vacation next week for a month. I want to continue blogging yet because I’ll be sitting around being lazy, and you know relaxing, I’m thinking I might need some help in the blogging topic department. So today in order to be entered into this little giveaway of mine you need to leave a comment AND:
ASK THE FREAK!!
Go ahead ask me anything although chances are good that if you are asking me anything deep and profound I’ll just get all baffled and confused and draw a blank. I can however give you clear instructions on how to run around a table looking like a funky giraffe so please go ahead and ask me that! Or, of course, an organizing question is always good too 🙂 All I ask is that you keep it clean and nice folks and no I’m not telling you how much I weigh!
Five lucky winners will be chosen at random from all the comments left. The last winner will be chosen by ME strictly based on whose question I liked the most and thought was the most creative….he he….hey it’s my giveaway, I want to have some fun too!! LOL
You don’t have to have a blog to enter but please do leave me your email address with your comment. One comment/question per person, duplicates will be deleted. I will close comments at 12:01 pm Friday afternoon. The winners will be announced sometime after that.
Remember please leave a comment and “Ask the Freak” a question to be eligible for this giveaway. Have fun!!
Giveaway only open to those living in Canada or the US.
Mique says

I want to know if you will be able to curb those organizing juices while away on vacation…or will your hosts be left with a “brand new look” by the time you leave? Do you ever go to someone’s house and “just can’t help yourself”?
Jeremy & Heather says
Would love to win. WE are in need of some organization around here with 2 little ones! Boys no less!
Lori @ The Simple Life at Home says
Ok, Miss Freak, here’s my question: How on earth does one keep their linens and towels in some kind of order? Every time someone (meaning people under the age of 13 who really could care less how the linen closet looks, not that there’s anything wrong with that!), removes a towel or bedding, it all starts to tip sideways, or forwardways (or some other ways) and ends up being a mess. Any ideas?
Shelby says
This would be an AWESOME thing to win for our tiny place!!
How do you keep your FRIDGE organized? How often do you have to go through it and toss stuff?
Jenn says
This is such a great giveaway…here is my question. I am needing a way to organize my kids papers from school along with papers to be filed. We don’t have tons of room so I was thinking of something could could sit on the filing cabinet? My husabnd would hate to put something in the wall.

Count me in – my husband calls me “the stuffer” because on the surface, our house looks OK, but if you open a drawer or closet, watch out.
My biggest issues are my recipe box (sits in a “pile” on top of my fridge as there’s no room in the actual box since everthing I print from the internet is 8×11) AND our playroom – I want to find an easy way to keep it simple and to rotate toys, but can’t get around to it as it seems to be a HUGE job.
Thanks!

She loves to change clothes throughout the day and it seems like every night I have to go re-organize the whole thing in order to find anything to wear the next day. How do you organize a child’s room when she thinks cleaning it is shoving everything under the bed? And by everything I mean toys, clothes, papers (aka trash), pieces of what used to be toys, other people’s shoes, couch pillows, and I’m not sure, but I think maybe her brother.
Hippolyta says
OK, sounds like a great magazine and I have a lot of questions about organizing, but I will try to confine it to one. Right now I am trying to organize my daughter’s room and closet. Oh Dear Freak….how I need your help and a new magazine (which I promise to read through and absorb, immediately followed by passing it on to someone else so it does not become part of the household landscape…..)
Now to my question: I have 3, soon to be four children…Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl. In January when the next one makes her appearance they will be ages 5,4,3 and 2…..We get a lot of handmedowns, and of course, the youngers do or will wear the clothes that the olders have outgrown. I need a system for storing the clothes that have been out grown, or are waiting or the next season….I have tried big bins, but somehow I lose track of what’s there and miss some good stuff. Please help….the basement storage room where these clothes live has become a serious den of iniquity, so you can see why I need your freaky self!
Thanks for your great site!

What a wonderful prize! Our biggest organizational problems seem to be in outbuildings – so do you have any inexpensive tips for keeping a shop or toolshed (or garage; we don’t have one but the shed is a similar idea) organized?
Stephanie says
Here’s two questions.
1. What do you do with magazines after you have read them?
2. A used car salesman hires you to organize his car lot. What system will you use? Make & model? Years? Color? Price? Alphabetical?
Milehimama says
I need this magazine!
My question:
How do you keep your car organized, at least at a level below a health code violation, with many little bodies and only two parental hands? I already have to make at least two trips from car to house after every major outing (and every outing is major) – one for diaper bag/purse/miscellany and one for children (I’ve got three in carseats).

I am so unorganized and easily feel overwhelmed when trying to “take control” of the clutter. I have baskets, I have bins, things seem to fly out of them or never make it into them. If I put everything away, it’s everywhere again within a day – and kids aren’t doing this, we are!
I have no idea where to start – what’s a good beginner tip? Something that makes a difference without being an overwhelming amount of work?

How do you deal with “special memory” items — things that are very meaningful for one reason or another but just take up too much darn room? This is a problem all over the house, and I could use some specific tactics…DH’s first hard drive and his first computer (ok, first 6 computers…), the bed frame that Grandma grew up using, icky old linens that belonged to Great Auntie…it goes on and on….

Currently we pile them ALL together and then monthly we divide them into piles – medical, utility, credit card(s), bank statements, other. Question: How in the world do you organize your kids’ art projects?!?
BrendaS says
Hi Laura aka ‘Freak’ (which sounds like such a nasty thing to call someone to whom I am just introducing myself! :)),
I am a long time reader…but apparently you had to offer a mag. sub. to a publication called ‘Organize’ to draw me out of lurkdom! You have succeeded! Thanks!
I would LOVE to have a subscription to that magazine. It sounds wonderful, as I love the thought of being perfectly organized…but then what would I do with all my time that I now spend thinking of ways to organize?
So…I tried to think of the thing that is the most difficult for me to organize in my household…beside my whole basement, that is…and I came up with books.
I have books, and books, and books, and did I mention books? I homeschool, so collecting books is a necessity, it seems. How can I organize my books? Do they all have to be displayed on shelves thereby getting dusty? How can I remember what books I have, so that I can find said books when I actually need them?
I feel better now that I have the expert (well ‘Freak’ would be the same thing as expert, right?) on the job.
Thanks!
Brenda (who lives in Canada and was thrilled that the offer was made to those in CANADA and the U.S.!!!!!)

First of all, k. has a GREAT question!! My toddler also loves to change clothes throughout the day (I’m teaching her how to dress herself) and that leaves all the clothes in a mess. I hope you pick her and answer that!!
As for myself, my question is what do you do with those sentimental things (like figurines) that you love and never want to part with, but also never want to dust?
I have some figurines that my mother gave me on important occasions (moving out, wedding, college graduation, etc) that while I don’t ever want to give away, neither am I really feeling a precious moments graduate in my bedroom. What are your thoughts?

From a fellow organizing junkie (i.e. ME) who can’t seem to figure this out….
How in the world do you handle storing kids clothing???
My son is always outgrowing stuff (he’s one) as well as my daughter, and, I have baskets for goodwill, consignment store, to save, but that system is just too time consuming (maybe I could streamline it better?) I feel like every time I do laundry, I have to re-sort what fits/doesn’t fit and reorganize the closets!
Also, any ideas on long term storage for those of us who have no basement/attic/garage? The only (permanent) storage place we have in our home is a small closet under the stairs…and, well, it only holds so much.
Okay, one more…then I’ll stop, I promise! How do you store seasonal clothing? (fall/winter/spring/summer) IN bags/bins? In closet/attic/basement? What is your system? Do you do it once every three months/twice a year?
Thanks!

It must remain functional, but I would love for it to be beautiful at the same time. It holds our phone books, library books, magazines, cookbooks, textbooks along with a basket of toys and a container of blocks. I’ve thought of buying magazine holders, but they all seem to be very expensive. I’ve also considered making my own out of cereal boxes or Priority mail boxes, but haven’t gotten around to it. OH HOW I NEEEEEEED this magazine!
Here’s my question:
How can I part with my kid’s old clothes. I have three boys, so these clothes have been passed down, and I must admit that I have developed attatchment issues. Not to all of course, but to WAY to much. I have BINS of them in my garage. I have taken photos of them in some of my favorite items, but I really want to save some for them to pass along in the future.
Second question: We have a climber. He is climbing up the shelves of his chest of drawers. We put “baby proof” things on them, but he can get them open “just enough” to use to climb. We have to have somewhere to store the non-hanging clothes, but this isn’t working. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

Question? What do you do with shoes? I am the worst offender. I kick them off the moment I walk in the door. Folks saw me doing it and thought I didn’t allow shoes in the house. Now if we have a few kids over you can’t get to the door because of the pile of shoes.

I love that magazine!!!! OK – I think you’re hilarious. I love organizing too. I’m not sure I near your enthusiasm but I am so much more productive when my house is in order. Here’s my problem –
I am capable of organizing and even enjoy doing it BUT I don’t!
I homeschool and find myself every school year slowly letting my house go until summer when I put everything back in order. It takes a lot of time and I don’t like living the other part of the year feeling like my house and I are slowly falling through the hourglass! I know you have some wise words for me. Please help!!!
Michelle says
The magazines sound awesome! I valiantly try to battle the clutter each and every day, which used to be easy when I lived by myself, but not so easy now that other people are involved who do not necessarily share my commitment to organization. With that in mind, and knowing that you have been blogging about your organizing successes for awhile now, is there any place left in your home that remains your nemesis, the one place that no matter how hard you try, it keeps “undoing” itself?

I’d love a magazine (I also NEED it). How can I work on meshing my organizational style and my husband’s? For example, I’d love to have all the “nice” clothes hung up, if they’ve been worn turn the hanger around or leave the buttons undone (something distinct so you know they’ve been worn and need to be washed next time) but my husband would rather fling them over a table or something. I could go on with more.

My question is how do you organize all your cleaning supplies? It seems like I have nothing but cleaning supplies on the shelf in my laundry room, some are duplicates (so we won’t run out of carpet cleaner at a bad time) but otherwise… I’ve got swiffer pads, cleaning agents, carpet cleaners, rags, things to make the air smell nice, things to keep things shiny, bottles that get rid of dust, and bottles to polish all sorts of different metals. Not to mention detergent, softeners, dryer sheets… the list goes on. 🙂

Hi! I love your blog! I found it while trying to find a way to organize my bathroom closet.
While it’s huge, I’ve found that I’m having a hard time fitting my…house… in there. But the main thing that’s bothering me is how to organize board games?
We have about 20 maybe more, and I have to keep them out of reach from the kids or else the pieces will get lost. This (among other things) makes my bathroom closet hideous.
Can you help? I have pictures, although you probably dont want to see it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea! Here’s my question – when you really want to do something – straighten up the pantry or the closet – but you get stuck, do you keep going hoping you’ll get creative as you go, or just quit?
I tend to have to be wanting to do that particular task and if it takes me a week to do, then I walk around that week annoyed that I can’t get it done! LOL 🙂

Are you opposed to young girls wearing low slung jeans with the “whale tail”? What about boys skater butts boxers hanging out?

I’ve been reading your blog for a few months now – love it! You’ve caused me to realize all of the clutter I have. I’m finally at the stage where I’m mentally prepared to de-junk my house. The magazine subscription in combination with ideas from your blog would be very helpful.
One of our biggest problems is mail. I pay bills once a week or so upstairs on the computer desk, but the rest of my life is spent downstairs. When the mail and other papers come in they always collect at the end of our kitchen table. The papers pile up until the day I finally sort them out and pay bills. Do you have some ideas for a mail collection and sortation system that would keep my table clean?
Thanks!

With 2 little ones, it’s helpful b/c it’s accessible, but it can be a catch-all to so many misc things. Just looking for suggestions… Thanks!!

Do you think that people are born organized or is it a learned skill? Some children thrive more on organization than others, so is it in them or a result of their outside circumstances? I hope I win the magazine! I was definitely not born into organization!LOL Have a good day!

Needleroozer says
How bout a bunch of questions?
WHat are the criteria to use to decide if something is worth keeping or not?? Do I keep it just because it belonged to my gramma? My mom seems to think I should, sigh.
ANd what about paper clutter? I have just boxes and boxes of old papers.
I am feeling overwhelmed by my clutter- how do I work up the energy and time to get started?

I, too, get a high from an incredibly organized space! 🙂 My question is: My husband is NOT an organized individual and at home…that’s ok since I can handle things for him. However, work is another story. What would be your suggestion for keeping him organized at work without making his office look frilly or girlie (ie, wicker baskets, plastic bins, etc)?
Thanks for your help and toss my name into the drawing for Organized – The Mag! 🙂
Happy Organizing!

My organizational life seems so much like my trying to eat the right food! It’s HARD work! I just got done cleaning out of my closet 20+ yrs worth of stuff that took me a few wks to finish. I can’t believe I let it go for that long but I did and I want it to remain somewhat organized now and not only my closet–but my room and all the other rooms as well! My question to you is: ‘how can I pull myself together to have some kind of control over my room and avoid the unwanted pounds of clutter’? Thanks!! Oh and I would really LOVE to win a subscription!! :))

I’d love a copy of that magazine.
Here are my questions…
1. I only have one drawer of our file cabinet for papers. how long do I keep band statements, water bills, etc. i have always heard different amounts of time, mostly 7 years.
2. when you use containers in your kitchen (I think I saw it here and not on the HGTV mission organization) to store food (sugar, flour, cereal, chips, etc) do you use the whole amount, wash the container, then replenish? If so, where would the extra bags of stuff go?
3. In my split level house there is storage under my stairs. It’s so deep I don’t know how or what to put in there. Any ideas?
thanks so much for your site. I just love it!

Wow, I would love this magazine! My question is this: I might be able to organize areas in my home but I have trouble motivating my other family members (there are 11 of us) to maintain the organization…eventually things become messy again and it’s very frustrating. I feel like I’m on a merry-go-round doing the same organizing tasks over and over again. How can I get the rest of the family to follow my “rules” of organizing? [email protected]

what’s your most shameful organizing secret??
Christine says
I really need to win this – I’m so bad at organizing. Thanks for putting it up.
My question is a big question. We have a tiny condo (900 sq ft with 2 kids) and I feel smothered with clutter no matter what I do or how often I clean (which is usually not enough). I even tend to have to make sure stuff doesn’t fall on me from cabinets or the top of the fridge (lol) How do you suggest organizing such a small space for a family? Especially when the kitchen is part of the main room. Everything just seems to pile up all the time.
You asked so I’m laying it out.

I’d love to have this for inspiration to keep our small space well-organized. And it’s always fun to have something come just for me in the mail.
Here’s my question…..How does a woman who works as a homemaker stay organized and keep up with her chosen routine (for example, canning/freezing fruit and veggies each summer or making great from -scratch meals) when she goes from just being married to being married with little ones needing her attention? People say it can’t be done, and that I will have to give it all up. But I don’t believe them, or at least I don’t want to believe them. Is there a way to keep all these plates spinning in an organized fashion? If yes, then what specific points of advice would you offer?

I used to get a subscription to that magazine, so I will be in heaven if I win! Don’t count me out if you see on my blog that I live in Paris, I have access to regular US mail.
My question is about storing baby clothes. I’ve been storing mine by size, but now the 3-6 month bin is overflowing. Is there any good way to use one container and clearly separate by size. Or do you use those huge ziploc bags to hold clothes? Any other useful tips to storing clothes?
I’d love to see the answers on your blog someday, although it looks like you have enough to post for years. Thanks for the giveaway!

Ok, I almost feel bad being the 400+ person to comment, but apparently not bad enough to stop myself. I will be praying for you as you make this decision.
Now, as soon as I read what you were giving away I got all excited thinking, I MUST own this magazine. But then I got all nervous and my mouth got dry and my palms started sweating as I thought of the possible clutter that would come about over having another magazine subscription. You think I’m joking? I just posted a couple of weeks ago about my fears of having 2 magazine subscriptions, winning this one would make 3. Yikes! My OCD side that has to read every single article from beginning to end is concerned. Anyway, I think my OCD side would eventually be ok with it, as it would result in even more organizing…which is what we like to do most 🙂
So, with all of the rambling officially out of the way:
Question: How to do organize your magazines? There are very rarely magazines that I feel the need to keep the entire thing, but there are certain articles that I’d like to refer back to occasionaly. But, I can’t stand clutter and can’t stand a collection of anything, even good magazines.
Even though I’m sure I sound like the biggest freak of all by now, I’d love it if you’d consider me for your drawing. And if you’d share your ideas on magazine organization.
Sincerely,
Holly

Great giveaway! I need help parting with sentimental items. I love Clean Sweep and Peter Walsh but he seems SO harsh.
