It all started with the new underwear!
Oh.My.Word! Is there ever a better time in the year to organize? There is something so cleansing about putting away all the Christmas decorations and making room for all the new “stuff”. I can’t get my organizing brain to shut off and I can’t seem to stop long enough to get to my pile of magazines.
You see I am a big believer in the one in, one out rule except in my house it’s the one in, two out rule. I do this with everything…if I get something new something old has to go. I get so caught up in it all. Take my new underwear for instance (don’t worry I won’t show you a picture). Do you think I could just pick it up and put it away in my underwear drawer like any other normal human being…….nope new underwear means I have to dump my underwear drawer out on my bed, go through and sort it all, purge it out and of course add new containers to try out a new configuration because well why not? The worst part? I can’t stop there…no way hoseay….the sock drawer is the next drawer down and everyone knows that you can’t have a nicely organized underwear drawer with a completely chaotic sock drawer underneath….this just wouldn’t be right. So the sock drawer gets dumped. Then I get those all sorted out and realize well you can’t have an organized underwear drawer and an organized sock drawer without also having the rest of the undergarments organized even if they aren’t even located in the dresser but clear across the room in the closet….but they would talk and word gets out amongst the undergarments and well I don’t want anyone’s feelings to get hurt sooooooo………I organize the rest of it into cute little plastic shoe boxes and label it all up pretty and now after all this I can finally rest, grab a tea and a magazine and well oh shoot if I’m going to make a trip to the thrift store tomorrow I might as well go through all of my clothes…..somebody stop me!
I’m running on overdrive…..must.slow.down…..must not neglect children, must not neglect husband, must not neglect blog. So if you don’t hear from me for awhile you’ll know why, I’m buried beneath mountains of baskets and old underwear!

LOL! That is so me. I get carried away in the exact same way. My problem right now, though, is I haven’t had enough time to get in my proper dosage of organizing, cleaning and purging (I love to get rid of things and throw away “trash”)… I guess going away on a trip during the holiday season will do that to you. Although, I did do some orgazning at my mom’s house. I get this itch inside of me that just won’t go away when I see too many messes and too much clutter.
Want to come to my house? I need to neglect everything and everyone and do this in every room of the house. I just can’t find the motivation…
You are so funny! I understand about feeling like you need to organize…I will let it go for a while, then that’s it…got to get it done…and then nothing can stop me….I’ll be a workhorse until it all gets finished!
It feels soooo good when it is done–like I have really accomplished something major!
But,sometimes other things are more important! Balance….that is key!
Just relax and have a cup of tea–it will be okay!
Kim
That was from me,Laura! Something happened. Sorry.
You are so funny. But I am learning alot of organizing tips from you. I scared my husband this week. He was going to put wrapping paper away and I was able to tell him exactly where it goes.
Also we had some friends over yesterday and my friend asked where our church directory was – and I was able to get it in 3 seconds. Amazing I knew right where it was. I felt so good about myself and thought about you and a lot of the tips & motivation I have received from your site.
Now I just need some tips on how to organize my Christmas decorations as I take them down.
Thanks
~Betty~
lol, makes me want to go rearrange things 😛 I’ve been thinking of switching the boys’ dresser for mine and DHs.
Lol, I do the same thing. I start in one place finish it and I simply have to go on to the next drawer, etc.
Sometimes I do get carried away and my poor Olyvia and hubby, Steve, don’t get much attention from me.
Balance it the something that I have to remind my self of constantly.
LOL! Funny…”they start talking and word gets around.” Hilarious!
I haven’t ever gone to that extreme, but I know what you mean. When I start a cleaning project I have a tendency to get absorbed in it and ignore everything else. I have to watch it, I can get testy when something (or someone) tries to interrupt me. I have to remember where my priorities lie.
Good luck with your dressers and closets!
By the way, one of the ways that I help keep my kids socks and underwear in check is with baskets. there are little baskets all in a row inside the dresser drawer. One for child A’s socks and undies, one for child B’s socks and undies, one for just for tights. It works well and each child can go straight to the dresser and come back with her socks, not her sister’s.
I never thought about it. I could do the same with MY drawer! A basket for socks, a basket for underwear, a basket for hosiery. Hmmm. (A grinch-like grin is spreading across my face.) I think I just might do that! 😉 The best part – baskets are CHEAP!!
Char, I hear you on the motivation thing…I’m that way with scrubbing floors.
An Ordinary Mom, yes I get that itch something fierce this time of year!
Kim and Air Force Family, balance is definitely key and something I am constantly trying to achieve because I really am addicted and it so hard to just say no.
Betty that is just great news…love to hear it. I’m taking down my decorations today and will post about it shortly.
Proverbs 31, I am basket crazy. I have baskets for underwear, socks, bras…you name it…you’d be hard pressed to find a drawer in my house without a basket. I love to contain like with like and baskets serve this purpose beautifully!
Kara let me know how it works out with the dresser rearranging…sounds fun!
That is just too funny the way you described it! Heaven knows what I would find if I dumped my whole underwear or sock drawer on the bed. It’s scary just to think of it.
Laura, you are such an inspiration to the rest of us unorganized people. I’m very organized at work but at home I have junk drawer after junk drawer. Thanks for visiting my blog!
Whew! Your making me dizzy! Actaully, I am doing pretty good with maintaining my closet from the challenge. I have been home from a 17 day trip less than a day and have unpacked and sorted the laundry. I put the suitcase back where it belongs and the closet is back to normal.
Christmas decorations…well, I wasn’t home for all but 11 days of December so I am going to enjoy these a bit longer.
Happy New Year!
Laura,
What a cute post! I’m going to start visiting your blog regularly, in the hopes that your zest for organization is contagious. Oh, how I need it for 07! 🙂
I am praying for your friends, and I’m inspired by their story and optimism, finding the bright side in everything! Praise God for that. 🙂
P.S. I really wish you could come over and help me organize my house. I am glad you reminded me of the 1 in 1 out rule. Better your 2 out rule! We still have a few of the favorite opened gifts under the tree…which will be up a little while longer. I am starting to get in organizing mode.
I was so proud of how well organized my Christmas decorations were when I put them away…now if I could just get the rest of my house that way!
It’s a sickness I tell ya!
Careful with the one in two out rule or you will end up with only one pair of underwear!
I have the day off tomorrow. I think I’m going to build something. I’m excited just thinking about it!
That is too funny! I am no where near as organized as you, but get me started and it is so hard to stop. I always make a huge mess before I clean…gotta make sure it’s all out there! Have a great weekend. Can you believe it is the last of 2006?
You crack me up, Laura. I’m visualizing your family starving to death while you sort out the underwear and socks. But of course you’re totally right. If you receive new underwear, you must purge, purge, purge the old!
Happy New Organizing Year!
You crack me up! I knew there was a reason I needed to visit you today (and always) – you inspire me! Have a happy New Year’s Day!
