The following is a guest post with 3 inexpensive ways to get your home organized from regular contributor, Kristin at The Gold Project.
When people mention organizing, the first thing that might pop into your head is the amount of money you will have to spend. The Internet is a wonderful thing, but it can also set us up for unrealistic expectations. Organizing can be fun, beneficial, and cost no money to accomplish. If you find a system that works, it doesn’t have to be Pinterest-worthy. At the beginning of my organizing journey, I felt that if my home was not organized to be featured and shared on Pinterest, then it wasn’t worth my time and effort.
Then, reality set in a few years later when I realized that I had a stash of storage containers in the attic that were just collecting dust. At one point, I purchased those organization pieces. I spent a nice amount of money on them too. So, why did I feel like I needed to go out and spend even more money on items that could end up adding to this same pile of organizers?
My point is that you don’t have to go out and spend tons of unnecessary money trying to purchase identical containers that meet the Internet’s expectations. Organizing can be fun and inexpensive. Today, I wanted to share some ways to get your home organized with zero money.
Shop Your Home
Find ways to use organizers in different ways. I have these 3-tier wire racks that have moved all over my home. They started out in my office closet, but as I needed them in other places, I moved them around. They may have been working well in the office closet, but I found they were needed more in other areas of my home.
These same racks that were in my office closet, now have helped me organize my master bedroom closet, daughter’s closet, and kids’ bathroom closet.
Try DIY Organizers
I will be the first one to admit that I am not very crafty, but I have found different uses for used containers that were going to end up in the recycling bin. For instance, I turned an empty cat litter jug into a magazine rack for my office. All I had to use was some twine (that I already had), hot glue, and scissors. I added a small embellishment to the front to make it a little more appealing.
Organizers can be made out of anything: shoe boxes, cereal boxes, ice cream containers, etc. By making your own organizers, you would not only be helping your home get more organized, but helping the planet as well.
Use What You Have
This is the one concept that took me awhile to really understand. I had to tell myself that my organizers did not always have to match. If they met my organization needs and I didn’t have to spend any money, then I have met my goal.
This was a major factor when organizing my kids’ books a few weeks ago. I had containers, but none of them matched. And, I didn’t have any containers from other areas of my home that I could switch so they would all match. I finally told myself it was not a big deal if they did not match. And, the organizing pieces that I chose fit the books perfectly. Plus, they held a lot of books.
I was able to check mark that task off of my summer to do list. And I did not have to spend any money in the process.
How have you been able to get your home organized without spending a lot of money? I am always looking for different ways to make this happen in my home.
