How to Organize a Portable On-The-Go Home Office
The following is a guest post from regular contributor, Angie at Echoes of Laughter.
Hello Org Junkie Readers! I am so happy to be back here to share a little organizing project that I am sure that many of you will be able to relate to…..the need for a little portable on-the-go home office.
How To Organize a Portable On-The-Go Home Office:
I created this little home office by purchasing a tote with a carrying strap, but a tote box of any kind would work just as well, or even a bag with pockets. I am a very visual person, so I like to be able to see everything and have the items easy to reach, so this tote works for me.
The inside of the tote looks like this. I love pretty colors, so I managed to snag all of these lovely office supplies at a discount store. The colors and patterns make paperwork seem less like a chore somehow! This tote holds my daily planner, file folders, an accordion file folder, large covered notepad, along with pens, thank you cards, a stapler, pens and post-it notes.
You know one of the things I like about this office space? It is very easy to keep clean and no vacuuming is required!
This portable office works because it can travel to any room, or even to the car. It can also be easily stashed away in a closet when it is not needed. Having this little on-the-go office works so well in keeping this little area of my life organized that when I want to look at something that is blogging related…I know right where to look and I love that!

You can also pick up mini hi-liters at Office depot and even less expensive at Dollar General (2/ $0.50). I keep hi-liters and a bag (picked up in the $1 section of Micheal’s) of colored pens in my tote (which is a Barnes & Noble book back with a ton of pockets). I hi-light my weekly lists based on which day or by category depending on what my list looks like that week.
I keep a notebook, day planner, current working on file, jump drive, and my bag of pens. It helps me keep on top of things!

I really like this. I’ve been on the go much more recently and have been shoving things into a bag but this more organized (and lovely to boot) set up is much more appealing.
What is in your holder that is labled blog invoices?
I imagine that’s where she keeps her blog invoices.
Lol…Ashley is probably curious about why the blog needs invoices? 🙂
I have been looking for this for days. I am organizing my office and I also am trying to set up an on the go office since I will be traveling a lot net year. I came across this awhile back and forgot where it was. Yeah, I found it. This is really awesome and just what I need with just a little tweaking.
I LOVE the black tote you are using! Who makes it or where can one get something similar? Thanks for the inspiration!
Angie says the black tote is from Homesense a couple of years ago here in Canada. I also found one at Value Village a number of years ago.

A blog post about tools that doesn’t provide sources?! Fess up! Where’s it all from?
Ditto on the tote – where’d you get it? Love it.
Christine, Angie says it is from Homesense a couple of years ago here in Canada.

Could that tote also be termed a magazine holder? I think I saw one like that once, that was billed as a magazine holder. Might help those who are trying to search for a similar item.
Google “magazine tote” and you’ll see pictures pop up of exactly this kind of thing!
I love this idea and need to create one of these! I am constantly trying to gather all my stuff up and switch to whichever room my toddler is playing in! Thanks for this great idea. I picked this post as one of My Friday Favorites today. You can check it out here: http://wp.me/p2hp9V-SJ
This looks so easy to do! I might need to add this to my car.
Thanks for sharing!
That is a GREAT idea, Shay!
This is a great idea. With so many people operating small businesses out of their home and many other always being on the go, it is imperative that they stay organized. It is the perfect compliment to your mobile devices and laptop and it will save you the time spend filing and recording things when you get back to the office.
This is a great post & I love all of the fun products that you’ve found. Please consider Office Candy for the next time you are looking for cute products for your office whether it’s in one spot or on the go (our file totes are perfect for anyone who works at more than one desk)! http://www.OfficeCandy.com
Those pretty colored things in the clear box what are they and how mau I acquire them?
Absolutely love this organizing! Love the vibrant colors. I have that same exact daily planner. I am doing A Bowl Full of Lemon’s Planner Challenge and have loads of pics of that planner on my blog for it! So nice to see someone else use it too! 🙂
Found this article while surfing today! Love the ideas! Have any of you heard of Thirty-one Gifts in your area yet? It’s a direct selling company relatively new to Canada, but has been in the states for 10 years.
Anyway, they (I) sell lots of totes and other organization items perfect for organizing a home office. Here are some ideas! Click on the link below and watch the videos.
