Organizing Batteries

I found this post in my drafts.  It’s just another example of how baskets can take your life from boring and ordinary to exciting and extraordinary.  No kidding, it’s the best.  Take a look for yourself and then go dump a drawer.  Be careful though, you’ll be hooked the very first time 🙂

  1. I do that with our batteries too, and for the rechargeable ones I have two separate things. One for “charged” and one for “need charging”.

  2. I have something similar, Laura. We have a small square plastic crate with a lid that we put our batteries in. I use ziplock bags to seperate the sizes…and I’m thinking about labeling them because I’m so anal that way 😉

  3. I have a trick so I remember which rechargeable batteries are charged and which are “dead” (need charging): you know those tiny rubber bands your kids have for their braces? The ones they use to hook their top teeth to the bottom ones? Well, they’re the perfect size to fit over a CHARGED battery, then I can take extra batteries with me in my purse, slip off the rubber band to use the battery, and, when it runs out of juice, throw the battery back in my purse never forgetting which batteries need to be charged (and never grabbing a dead one)! I leave the bag of rubber bands next to the charger and slip a new band around each newly charged battery.

  4. My husband will love this – he is a battery freak. LOVES buying them – I of course, don’t like clutter, so I like to get ONE pack when I use the existing batteries

  5. I have a stack of those plastic bins from Target (I got them 75% off)…now I know what to do with them.

    Thanks!

  6. I like to keep mine in the original package. It helps keep the ends from touching. A fire inspector told me that two batteries touching can start a fire.

  7. I needed this yesterday.

I made a list and popped out to do our weekly shop, only to get home and realize we were out of AA’s for Monkey’s Moon night light!

  8. ooooooh, pretty! Mine are all in a body shop cream container, in the “charger” basket. I though it was pretty good, but now I may need to rethink the situation!

  9. We keep ours in a plastic tub but I keep them in the original packages. This way if there’s one floating around in there I know I should try it first, because it might be a partially used battery. Then I can toss it (recycle it I mean) or use it and move on to the new batteries. Honestly a drawer full of batteries not in their packages would drive me insane… ha ha.

  10. I separate my batteries into two bins – alkaline and rechargeable (charger lives there). A third bin in the same cabinet is used for cords that recharge appliances without removeable batteries. I am so much happier every time I open that cabinet door!

  11. Love the batterie idea I have all mine just scattered in one drawer separating would save a lot of time and money wise knowing when to grab some more when your running low especially use coupons before they expire.

  12. Hi Laura – how’d you know I needed help w/this? Actually I do the same thing, I use lotsa small containers when organizing. But then it needs to be done again – like now! lol.
    Happy Weekend!

  13. We do the same thing, I just wanted to let you know though that all the batteries should be facing the same direction or else you can lose your charge on them.

  14. What a difference a little organization makes! Thanks for sharing the before and after pictures…wow. I use bags to organize my batteries, but I LOVE the idea of using baskets.

  15. What a great, but simple idea. I have all my batteries in one draw together but how much easier to have them sorted by type into baskets. Thanks so much for sharing. I’ll definitely be doing this.

  16. I could have used a drawer like yours earlier in the week when my smoke detector started screaming “Low Battery” at 2am!! Did I have a 9volt–of course not! and even if I did–I guarantee you I wouldn’t have been able to find it! 🙂

  17. We keep our batteries in the freezer. Better make this a project this week… they need to be organized badly. And yeah, I keep lots of batteries. The grands are always needing one when they come over! lol

  18. Very nice! My husband came home from Iraq twice with hundreds of batteries (literally) because in the PX, they had huge bins of loose batteries. It didn’t matter what size, they were all a penny each. He brought home huge bags of them both times, which is great but I’ve been keeping them in gallon ziploc bags, mixed together. This is much better!

  19. I so need this – just pulled down my box of batteries the other day to replace the flashlight ones and they were a mess! Now I have a solution – thanks!

  20. Hi, I just found your blog. I like what you did with your batteries…How did you get little plastic containers to fit so well inside of that big container? it looks great. Great job!

  21. That’s a great way to organize the batteries. Right now we just have most of them in a box in the garage. I would probably have organized them by now except that they are in the garage which is hubby’s domain.

  22. I love how the drawer looks. My kids hate when I get into one of my organizing moods. They start grabbing and hiding all of their stuff LOL. I do have one junk drawer, however if the day comes I can’t find something in there, you bet it’s getting cleaned out LOL.
