This might be an old idea to some but just in case someone hasn’t heard of it this is an idea that worked for me for many years when money was tight. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on storage containers if you don’t want to….just take a look around your house for different ideas. Any kind of box can be cut down to the size you need especially cereal and cracker boxes. For instance, cereal boxes make great magazine holders. Just cut the top flaps off and down the sides at an angle and there you have it instant holder. Great for keeping kids coloring books and workbooks organized too! Here are some pictures to demonstrate….you know it just wouldn’t be the same without the pictures!

That is a great tip! I have been wanting some magazine holders for my cooking magazines, but I can’t bear the thought of shelling out $5 a pop for cute ones. If I just cover up the cereal box with some scrap wrapping paper, extra shelf-liner, or something like that, these will be cheap, quick, and cute.
Thanks!!

Hi Sarah, I actually was going to mention that in my post and forgot. Yes the cereal boxes are easy to cover as well which is nice to do if they are going to be sitting out. Thanks for reminding me of that! Laura

Great idea! I’m always looking for ways to use and reuse. And, I think they are rather clever looking as well. Very creative!

That is SO creative! I must have a go at this for Munchkin’s colouring books and notebooks.
Thanks for sharing!

Okay, that might help me in my org challenge, because I don’t have tons of $$ to spend right now.

Just to let you know… Your idea here encouraged my WFMW post today. I linked to your post here in mine. Thanks for reminding me I really do have an idea.
And thanks again for this wonderful idea!!

Such a great idea–and cheap too! I was just wishing I had $$ for a holder for my smaller, magazine-like cookbooks last night. I’d bet this would work just great!

Wonderful idea! I have never even thought of that before! I’ll probably cover mine in some coordinating scrapbooking paper and label them!
(I couldn’t see the pictures in your post, so I am not sure if you did this too!)

You are just too stinkin’ organized and smart for me. The offer of having you come to straighten me out still stands. Biscuits and gravy and pie are still in the offering if you can make it!

BTW, who did your FABULOUS design. It has such a great “feel” — like I’m in your cozy home 🙂

OK. I’m convinced now. I’m completely sure you’re the most unbelievably organized person I’ve ever met in my life. I thought I was organized. You shame me! 🙂

Great post Laura!

Yep, been using this idea for years. Last year I discovered as I order things from ebay the priority boxes some use are great too. They are even sturdier than cereal boxes and the kids can decorate them! I can recycle right here at home rather than send it out on the recycling truck. LOL

Wow – what a great (cheap and easy) idea!

I love this!! I’m doing this with the very next cereal box I empty!! I could use this for the kids coloring books and workbooks that tend to flop over on the bookshelf, and for cookbooks that I store under my microwave cart. If I cut the top of neatly enough, I could flip the tops over, trim them down a little and use them in the baby’s dresser for socks and stuff! Yay!
