The Fall Into Reading Challenge is finally here!!!! This exciting event is being hosted by Katrina over at Callapidder Days. Here is what she has to say about the challenge:
“The Fall Into Reading Challenge encourages you to set goals for your personal and/or family reading. Everyone who wants to participate will make a list of books that they’d like to read (or finish) during the next few months. We’ll share these goals with each other, and then share our results at the end of the challenge.”
“The challenge will take place from September 23/06 to December 21/06.”
So I have put together quite the challenge for myself. You see I have no problem reading fiction. My problem is finishing the non-fiction books that I insist on buying and then watch as they collect dust on my nightstand. By non-fiction I mean self help. I’m always trying to improve on something and I really do think they’ll help me but for whatever reason they sit unfinished. You’ll notice in the picture that 4 of the books have bookmarks in them….at one time or another I started them and have yet to read one to the end. NOW IS THE TIME! I want to do this….and I want to be held accountable. Here is a picture of my stack and then I’ll list them for you:
For me:
Preteen Wise by Gary Ezzo and Robert Bucknam
Lord Teach Me to Study the Bible in 28 Days by Kay Arthur – current bible study I’m taking
The Mom I Want to Be by T. Suzanne Eller
Creative Correction by Lisa Whelchel
Family First by Dr. Phil
Digital Scrapbooking for Dummies
50 Ways to Create Cool Pictures by Dave Huss
For reading to the kids:
It’s NOT the Stork! by Robie Harris
It’s so Amazing! by Robie Harris
It’s Perfectly Normal by Robie Harris
Okay it seems like a lot to me. It would be nothing if it were six fiction books and usually that is how I get sidetracked from reading the above books….I see a great novel and I just can’t pass it up…..lol.
I can do this….I think I can….I think I can…I think I can……

You can do it!! I read a lot of nonfiction, but I also don’t always finish it. One thing that helps me (or maybe it hinders–I don’t know) is reading more than one book at a time, depending on my mood.
Katrina says
Oh Laura, you’re a girl after my own heart. Most of my non-fiction books have bookmarks in them too. I’m sure they’re ALL wonderful, I just can’t seem to stick with them. I think that will be one of the best things about this challenge.
Oh, and I hopped on over the Amazon to investigate the books you’re reading to your kids. You’re a brave woman. I think I’ve talked to my 7-yr-old appropriately for his age, but I know it’s one of those ongoing conversations. Good for you!

Just read your daughter’s blog! So cute! She read all the same books i read when i was her age! And it looks like we are reading the same books too… have fun reading
Karen says
Great choices!
Your list reminded me I have “Preteen Wise” sitting on a shelf somewhere . . . I should dig it out and add it to my list!
Enjoy all your reading!

I liked Creative Correction a lot. And I have trouble getting through non-fiction also. 🙂

Great list!! And how wonderful that you have got your daughter on board with the challenge too!

Good luck with your reading! I need to get myself the next Janet Evanovitch book (her “Stephanie Plum” mystery series).
I see you are reading a book about digital scrapbooking. Do you know there are many places on line where you can get free downloads for scrapbooking? LMK and I’ll get you some links!

What a GREAT list! I’ve heard good things about Family First, and I’m also doing the Lord, Teach Me study! Enjoy your reading!!
Susanne says
Oh, Laura, I soooo relate! Fiction I eat up, non-fiction tough slugging. I’ve got a book in my list too that I’ve had in my sidebar all summer. I think I’ve read 4 pages. Sigh.
But Creative Correction and 50 ways to create cool pictures sound interesting. Think I’ll put those on my library hold list. Maybe I’ll even buy hubby the picture one for Christmas!
Mom2fur says
Hey, I just read the reviews on Lisa Welchel’s book. I’m sorry, but it sounds frightening and abusive. I’d be curious to hear your own take on it after you have read it!
Gail says
I don’t read a lot of non-fiction either. That might have been the best plan, to put no fiction on the list but I just didn’t do it! You will read some really beneficial books! Enjoyed your list.
Jenny says
This looks like fun. I think I’m going to add a few books! Going to do my list right now!
Barbara H. says
I tend to devour fiction, too, and have to make myself get into non-fiction, but it is usually worth it when I do. Interesting list!
Susan says
The thing about nonfiction is that it doesn’t always require that we read it cover to cover. We “read what we need” from it and sometimes leave it for later. This is a great list.
I wish you much success and Happy READING!!

You can do it!!
And hey, I’m part of the Kay Arthur study, too! 🙂
I have Creative Correction, but I haven’t had to get into it quite yet. We bought it way before our 2-year old even turned 2. 🙂
Happy reading!

Ok, so wow, this list totally impresses me! I am a fiction reader myself, although I do occasionally buy and/or read a non-fiction book. I should have put at least one on my list, but I just couldn’t do it. I totally admire your intent and dedication 🙂
Happy Fall and Happy Reading!!!

I’d recommend “How to Really Love Your Teens” by Ross Campbell over “PreTeenWise” by Gary Ezzo.
We were giving Campbell’s book by his grown son. Ezzo’s grown daughters are estranged from him.
Just looking at the fruit. . .
Robyn Tippins says
I’d rather scratch my eyes out than read anymore Ezzo stuff, but the rest of the books look really good. I need to get my own book list together.
Thanks for sharing this. I’m now motivated! Also, am trying your beefstew this week. Can’t wait 🙂
