So I had a friend over today and she was surprised that my home despite being organized still had that lived in feeling and that got me to thinking. What is my goal when organizing my home? Its not what you might think. So I thought I’d clarify. I know I said “a place for everything and everything in its place” but when you have three kids not everything is going to be in its place all the time. Thats life. My goal isn’t necessarily to have a neat and tidy home at all times. My GOAL is to implement systems that provide a place for everything which if enforced will allow for everything to be put in its place quickly and simply when the time comes and it also means not spending valuable family time looking for things that are lost because they have no home. For example my kids have plenty of toys yet they all have a home. We have containers for each type of toy (lego, bionicles, batmans, barbie, etc..) Do I make them clean up their rooms everyday. No, that would be crazy. They are allowed to have untidy rooms because I know that when I do tell them to clean up it can be done in a simple quick easy process due to the systems that are in place. If the process turns out not to be a simple process after all then I know we have outgrown a system and we start again. For instance, when a container gets too full its time to start the purging process…my favorite! Its like that with everything in my house. A place for everything also means like is sorted with like (keep similar items together). Organizing is a process that grows with you. You can’t expect to have the same system in place for years. It just won’t work. So I’m glad my house has a lived in feel and I’m glad that at the same time I know where everything is! Its all good!!
