Hey friends, I’m sure you are all getting for the holiday season that is quickly approaching us. I hope that you will purposely try to slow down and really savor and enjoy these moments with family and friends as we can easily get caught up in the busyness of it all. I’m personally trying to savor them by spending time baking with my littles and seeing them enjoy this season through their eyes. It’s not always easy because they can be messy little monsters but I know I won’t regret them once this season is over and a new one enters.

One way to get ready for this holiday season for me was to declutter my home. I’ve been on a mission to organize and remove a bunch of items from our home. As the kids get older, I want to get rid of clothes, toys and other items that aren’t being used. Decluttering also makes it so much easier for the Christmas decorations to come out because the home feels fresh and simplified. One of the ways I did this was being part of an organized neighborhood garage sale. Don’t feel pressured to do this now right at the start of the holidays but bookmark these tips so that you can tackle this after the holiday season. It’s never a bad time to declutter and January always seems like a good time for most people to do just that.¬†If you’re wanting get rid of stuff, here are some tips that I believe will help you have an organized and successful garage sale.

Tips for an Organized & Successful Garage Sale

Tip 1

Be sure to have enough change on hand. Make sure that you have enough small dollar bills as well as coins.

Tip 2

Have a number of signs leading up to your home from the main road. You want to make it easy for folks to locate your home. I’ve seen way too many people have garage sales with one sign at the entrance. That’s not enough! You need to have one at every corner of each street leading up to your home and make sure it’s bright and easy to read.

Tip 3

Keep similar items corralled together. This includes frames, home decor items, toys, clothes, etc.

Tip 4

Make sure to have prices labeled on the items. Keep items cheap! No one wants to pay a lot for second hand stuff. Be reasonable when people want to negotiate. If you don’t sell it, you will either be hauling back into your home or donating them. It’s much easier to rid of it when you can.

Tip 5

If someone seems interested in a group of items, sell the whole lot for a set price. A lady bought all those earrings for one price.

Tip 6

Utilize furniture to hold nicer items like glassware and decor. Arrange it as nicely as you can. Place Christmas items together and try to showcase your nicer items. Presentation does matter!

Christmas items were grouped and arranged together on this buffet. We also used a standing hanger for clothes.

Tip 7

List your garage sale on Craigslist or other online sites. Also, try to sell stuff on Facebook groups or Craigslist prior to your garage sale so that you can get rid of your larger and nicer items. I’ve found you can make more money this route.

Tip 8

My last tip is to make it fun! I did mine with a girlfriend and we had a great time together. Our kids had a lemonade and cookie stand and it forced them to play outside the whole time while we sold our goods. We hauled all of our unsold items for donation immediately after the garage sale and we felt so good! We made extra money and our homes were cleaner. I’m a firm believer that too much stuff and clutter can add unnecessary stress to our lives.

I hope you found these tips for a successful garage sale helpful and may you have a wonderful start to the holidays, friends!
