Menu Plan Monday ~ Feb 14th + giveaway!!

Update: Giveaway now closed.

Happy Monday everyone and Happy Valentine’s Day as well!  In our house we have a family tradition of having heart shaped waffles on Valentine’s Day.  My heart shaped waffle maker is on it’s last legs but I still drag it out for this special occasion 🙂  Aren’t they cute?!  Ahhh!

This time though I’m going to try yet another new waffle recipe because I just can’t help myself!  How does healthy Banana Brownie Waffles sound?  Yum, I can hardly wait!  I’ll let you know how they turn out next week.  Also depending on my time I’d love to whip up a batch of these mini Berry Good Chocolate Cupcakes for dessert.

Both of these recipes come from the talented duo, Liz Weiss and Janice Newell Bissex, over at Meal Makeover Moms.  They have a wonderful new cookbook out called No Whine With Dinner that I’m so super excited to tell you about.

Over the last couple of years I’ve tried a number of their recipes from their website and have loved every one including Teriyaki Salmon in Foil and Have-It-Your-Way Tacos.  So I was thrilled when they sent me a copy of their new cookbook to try out.  It includes 150 healthy, kid-tested recipes!   They enlisted kids from all around the world to help them test each and every recipe.  In fact my daughter and I even got in on the fun and provided them with our opinions on the Ginger Drizzle Cookies recipe (pg 181), which we loved by the way!

This awesome cookbook is full of easy to prepare recipes that are not only quick to put on the table for busy families on the go but healthy too!    This is one cookbook I don’t hesitate to highly recommend!  Check out their site, Meal Makeover Moms, for more information and recipes and to watch some cooking videos too.

Janice and Liz have also given me a copy of their book to giveaway here today as well!  If you are interested please leave a comment on this post prior to Saturday, Feb 19th at 3:00 pm PST. Winner selected at random from comments received. This giveaway is now closed.  The winner is: #154 Lori!!

So here’s what we’ll be eating this week:

Monday: Banana Brownie Waffles served with Strawberry Sauce and whipped cream

Tuesday: Slow Cooker Luau Chicken with Pineapple and Carrots (also from No Whine with Dinner)

Wednesday: Sweet ‘n’ Tangy Pot Roast (missed from last week)

Thursday: Leftover buffet

Friday: Pierogi Beef Skillet

Saturday: Spaghetti with Marinara Sauce

Simple Supper Sunday

  1. The cupcakes look so pretty. Over the years I’ve come to realize that the presentation of our meals is just about as important as the taste. When something looks appealing, even the youngest kids are willing to at last give it a try. Thank you for hosting this each week!

  2. That book looks like just what I need. I am always on the lookout for healthy kid-friendly recipes. (2 of my 4 kids are picky eaters!)

    Happy Valentine’s Day! 🙂

  5. Oh this would be so nice to have…my 5 year old is getting pickier all the time it seems! He has a kids cookbook but it seems to use odd things I never have on hand so sadly we don’t use it all that often. This would be a great addition to our kitchen!

  6. I have a 2 year old and I could really use some ideas. This cookbook would be MORE than great for our household.

  7. Yes definitely getting the heart waffle maker at walmart too. I an sure it will be 50% off after Valentine’s day!

    1. I would definitely buy another if I ever saw them again…our Walmart doesn’t carry them here 🙁 I got mine for a wedding present 16 years ago!

      1. i just ordered one of the heart shaped waffle makers on ideeli.com and after a joining credit that they gave you for being a citibank member, i ended up only paying $5.85 for it! i looked for the same one online and the cheapest i saw it was at overstock.com for 15.99 plus 2.95 in shipping. here is the link if you are interested :

  11. I remember my heart-shaped waffle maker. My kids loved those waffles, but it sadly died and was replaced by our new boring round waffle maker. I’d love to win the cookbook and use it for the kids’ cooking classes I teach in the summer. Hoping you have a better week.

  18. Thanks so much for the chance to win the cookbook! I’m always on the lookout for tried-and-true (especially kid-friendly) recipes!

  19. I just wanted to say that that sounds like a book that is calling my name. I have the hardest time deciding what to cook because all three of my guys, two little ones, one big one, are all so picky. Trying to figure out what to cook wears me out to the point that I don’t even want to make out the grocery list and go to the grocery store afterwards, let alone cook. Really hoping I win the book!

  20. I love cookbooks and I especially love healthy recipes that my kids will love! I hope I win the book!!

  21. The cookbook sounds awesome! And so does your menu this week! The Slow Cooker chicken is especially appealing, which means one way or another I need to get my hands on No Whine with Dinner! 🙂 -Christina (www.christinatibesar.blogspot.com)

  36. Menu includes eating out tonight because it’s my birthday and Valentine’s Day; Tues-leftover potato salad (I made for church dinner on Sun but way too much food brought and we brought it home) and leftover BBQ chicken (from the dinner as well) with green beans; Wed-reheat bean and ham soup that was frozen after making a huge batch a couple weeks ago; Thurs-mini ravioli and meat sauce and veggies; Fri and Sat still in planning stages. Not sure about Sat. cuz I could be out of town visiting my sister for our birthday get to gether or in town because of a friend’s funeral. That sums it up. Sweater —-one more seam to sew up and buttons on, today!

  37. I made heart-shaped pancakes this morning from the Cheapskate Cook’s page. When your waffle maker goes on the fritz, this is could easily take over. I tried to serve them with real cherries but the kid’s didn’t go for it…apparently maraschino cherries are the ONLY cherries that are acceptable. This is why I need the No Whine with Dinner cookbook…please?!?!?!

  38. I have two young boys and this would be such a HUGE help in my ability to get them to eat dinner!! Thanks for the giveaway!

  48. I love to cook but find it difficult to find good food my kids will eat. Would love to win this cookbook to find new recipes to solve that!

  49. We would love a copy of this book. It seems we can never get past the standards of grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, pizza, blueberry pancakes and fish sticks! Help me, please!! LOL

Thanks for the continued great posts and advice!!

  50. This book looks very good! I’m always looking for ways to make meals more appealing to my kids! Great post!

  51. You’d think we were all a bunch of alcoholics by the amount of “Whine” we have at our dinner table…every night!!! Would love to check this book out!

  52. I would LOVE to get my hands on that cookbook. I am feeling so overwhelmed and just can’t get the hang of meal planning. I have 3 young children and we would use this to help us get a handle on our meals and taking care of my family!

  56. That cookbook looks so great. It would be great to have around with my baby growing up as well as my husband who is so picky.

Those pancakes are super cute! I made a modified version of this fruit pizza
    http://www.melskitchencafe.com/2011/02/fruit-pizza.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+melskitchencafe/NvNP+(Mel's+Kitchen+Cafe)

Instead of a cream cheese icing (my husband doesn’t do cream cheese). I made a lighter husband friendly version by mixing up some dream whip and adding the strawberries on top.

  60. We all love to try new healthy recipes, and I am really in need of quick recipes! Winning this would be wonderful.

  61. This book sounds sooo awesome! I have four kids from 16-5 yrs. So it is always tricky finding something that we all like! FYI, you inspired me to try menu planning…but instead of once a week…I do it for the whole month! I love it. Even if I don’t stick to it hard, I know that I don’t have to go back out!!

  62. I just love new cookbooks. Collecting cookbooks is my hobby. This looks like a cookbook that I would put on my Christmas list, if I didn’t win. Thanks,
    Lynn Pridgen

  63. Thanks for this recommendation – my daughter is super picky and I loath cooking for all the negative comments received – now do they have one for Kraft-dinner eating Dads?!

  64. I love the meal makeover moms! I listen to their podcast every week and saw them live at the manic mommies escape back in 2007. I would love to win their new cookbook. We just had the Have It Your Way tacos for dinner tonight and my 4 & 2 year olds gobbled them up!

  65. I love your heart shaped waffles! Those are so creative! I wish I had one, but I should be thankful for my waffle maker. I finally got my first one this Christmas! haha!
    🙂

  66. I always tell my husband I would rather have a cook than a house cleaner…this would be a step in the right direction!

  67. In our last MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meeting, several mommies and I were talking about how hard it is to “help” our kids choose the right kind of foods. We are planning to do an educational session in our group on this very topic. I am sure this book and its recipes would be put to great use!

  68. My son has been pretty open to pretty much all foods so far, but I’m sure the picky phase will hit eventually. I would love a cookbook!

  69. I have a child with sensory issues and trying new things is so hard ! I have been hearing about this book and would love to own it:)

  70. No Whine with Dinner – I’d treasure that book.
Today I made a batch of heart shaped sugar cookies most of which I took to the local nursing home and then gave small bags to some other friends.
Tomorrow will be salsa chicken and rice for 16 adults and about 10 children – Church board members and families. I have the table set with red cloths and white candles.
Wednesday I’ll be making lasagna for 48 and 4- cheese bread.
No, not every week is like this, but I do like to bake and entertain.

  71. I love your heart shaped waffles. I would love to win that cookbook. We have a lot of whine with our dinners lately.

    Blessings
    Honey

  72. Waffles and strawberries must be the Valentine’s day breakfast. We stuck with a very red day – the kids loved it. Thanks for providing information about this cookbook.

  73. Would love to win. Thank you for your wonderful blog. You inspire me to organize and cook. I am still not at actually meal planning, but I have a list of meals that I can make… and I decide what to make on the day of. It works for me, for now. Thank you!

  74. Those recipes sounds great! My hubby is a picky eater and generally when we find a good tasting recipe that kids like, he likes it too. Your blog is so interesting to read. Thanks for writing.

  75. Would LOVE to win that cookbook! Their slow-cooker Mile-high Spinach Lasagna recipe was in my local paper a few weeks ago. It would have been DELICIOUS if I hadn’t overcooked it and burned all the cheese around the sides into a solid black rock formation of nastiness. Will definitely try it again though. Great recipe, total user error. Thanks Laura!

  76. I would love to try this cookbook on my picky eaters! I love your blog…I am an organizing junkie myself so it’s always fun seeing what you have been up to and getting new ideas. 🙂

  77. This book sounds great! My son is a very picky eater, but I can get him to try new things, especially if I let him pick the recipe. I’ll have to check their site, too. Thanks for telling us about this!

  78. I am such a fan of the Meal Makeover Moms and have their newest cookbook checked out by my library… would love to have one to keep!

  79. I would love to win this. I am always trying to find healthy recipes for my picky husband and 2 year old daughter.

  80. This would be wonderful. I’m always looking for new ways to incorporate healthy ingredients, without having my family rebel.

  81. I love the meal makeover moms – I catch them when they are on Manic Mommies. The new cookbook sounds great!

  82. Yummy, those heart shaped waffles look delicious! And the cookbook sounds perfect – it’s such a challenge to find good meals that will be enjoyed by a range of people while ensuring that they’re healthy…

  83. I’d love to have new ideas for dinner. Spring baseball is upon us and I want to be prepared with a game plan that avoids the quick takeout meal of desperation.

  84. I would LOVE to win this book. My daughter is such a picky eater, meal time is a nightmare. I wish meal time was not such a struggle.

  85. The Strawberry Sauce sounds great, I have it bookmarked and can’t wait to try it. And I would love to win a cookbook. I am having a hard time finding meals that our entire family enjoys. I usually have 3 out of 4 people like a meal, but I really want to find foods that 4 out of 4 of us like!! Thanks for hosting the giveaway.

  86. Oh my! Those are some tasty looking bittles! I’m definitely going to check out their website for the ideas on picky eaters – I’ve got three, and they’re all picky in different ways. Thus far, we’ve dealt with it by me making dinner for the grown-ups, and my husband makes a separate dinner for the kids. I really don’t like this, and while we’ve tried several times to bring it back to one meal for all, we haven’t been able to make it stick. Perhaps if I were as stubborn as my children… 🙂

  87. I would love to try this! I’m going to check out their website right now. We have picky eaters times four! Help!

  88. I would love to try out this cookbook with my 4-year old, who loves to try and help me out at the kitchen counter!

    Thanks,

    Kendra

  91. So glad to hear about the cookbook and website! Always looking for meal ideas to please people ages 2-40. Thanks.

  92. Omg, that looks heavenly. I’m visiting from Penelope’s Oasis and I have to tell you, the heart waffles are so cute! (but I’m a girl, hearts and cute shapes kind of girl)(which is obvious if you see all the butterflies on my site, lol)

I didn’t link up above since I didn’t post about this this week, but I am going to visit in the future, if for nothing else, for inspiration from everyone.

  93. I need this book!!! I’m stuck in a never-ending cycle of chicken nuggets, pasta, pizza, and grilled cheese.

  94. LOVE the Meal Makeover Moms! Haven’t had a chance to get this cookbook yet, and with a picky 4 year old, I think it would be great!

  97. Can I still have my wine with dinner?! Thanks for sharing, I have a suddenly picky 8 year old. And I’m tired of fighting! I just stumbled upon your great site and I look forward to many easy nights of family dinners!!

  98. My three-year-old has decided he doesn’t like the majority of what is on his plate at dinner. Help with this would be great!
