I made a pie. From scratch. For the first time. And it turned out. I still can’t get over it.
The best part of last week’s cooking disaster is knowing that it just can’t get any worse than that. Which is comforting to me actually, knowing that I could try making anything now and not have to worry about it messing up as bad at that. So I think it’s important that I take a moment to express my gratitude to the alien life form pizza braid because without it, I might never have made pie.
I’ve always been afraid of making homemade pie crust. In my mind, knowing my baking history, homemade pie crust was better left to the “professionals”. There was no way I was going to even attempt it. Ever. Until, of course, the pizza braid disaster of 2009 occurred. Now I feel like I can conquer the world!
So I made pie.
Strawberry Rhubarb Pie.
Did I mention it was from scratch? As in I did not have to open a box to get to the crust. I can’t even begin to tell you how scared I was.
I found this yummy recipe, called Pucker Up for Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, from the Makes and Takes blog last week and got up the courage to give it a go. Marie says she likes to make Martha Stewart’s Pie Crust recipe so that’s what I did. I had no idea how to do any of that fancy edging stuff (I just pressed it into the side and it kind of did its thing) but take a look at how it turned out. Not too bad if I do say so myself.
And you know what? It was easy. All these years I’ve put it off and low and behold, it was a piece of pie! (ha ha)
Have you been putting something off due to a fear you have of failing? Whether it’s trying a new hobby, a new recipe or organizing your closet, don’t put it off any longer. Just do it and I’ll bet you’ll be glad you did!

Unfortunately, I’ve raised putting off things due to fear of failure to an art form. 🙁 On the lighter side of things, though, your pie looks great! 🙂

Thanksgiving here you come! LOL. Way to go. I know that making a pie crust can be intimidating. You did a great job.
Hugs.

I was afraid to make a lot of things from scratch. Then I had two kids with a dairy and soy allergy and I found that I had no choice. Anything that you can find pre-made with no dairy and no soy is incredibly expensive. Not everything turns out great because I am still learning what makes a good substitute and what doesn’t but I am getting there.

It truly is a thing of beauty! Congrats!

Mmmm, Laura, that looks yummy. I love rhubarb but my granny cooked it so well I’m scared to mess with the perfection 🙂

That looks delicious! We might have to add that to our “What do we do with all of these strawberries?” arsenal.

Congratulations on your accomplishment!

Yum! Congratulations 🙂 The very first thing I made “homemade” after we were married was an apple pie…. I admit, it was one of the cooking things that scared me the most, but it wasn’t so bad. Glad to hear pie will be frequenting your kitchen more often 🙂

Now you’ve got it going on! Hooray to you! Maybe one of these days I’ll try making a pie because it looks and sounds delish! xx

Yay!! It looks fabulous. I’m so happy it went well for you. I’ve gone through that same conversation before I ever made a pie too, but it really is all too easy. And isn’t that Rhubarb and Strawberry filling to die for? I just made it again last weekend. Thanks for the link back!

I am afraid of yeast. I avoid all recipes that have yeast in them.

That is a beautiful pie…good job!

You are being way too hard on yourself. The pizza braid is not that bad. All good cooks can tell you stories of mess ups and blunders. And the pizza braid is not one of them. As in everything it’s practice practice practice. Your pie is absolutely perfect. You could put it in the fair. I unusually expect myself to make a new recipe three times before it is even close to good. I think it is wonderful that you try new things so easily.

That pie looks great!! You have inspired me to try making pie crusts again. Mine never turn out. I’m a good cook – not so much with the baking.

I blogged your blog. Thanks so much for the continuing inspiration – I’ve been doing a LOT of organising – but with less containers!!!

I’m afraid to try to make a pie crust from scratch. lol. seriously. All I hear is how “hard” it is to get it right. my grandmother could make PERFECT pie crusts, and I’m sure my own would be a shallow imitation. so I don’t make pies. or I use pre-made crusts! I know, I know, I just gotta TRY it! 🙂

*wow*
pie looks beautiful!
as for the “disaster”, not to worry…
I’d be willing to bet that had I tried it, I’d have ended up with an “alien” pizza braid too, LOL

That’s funny, I just made a strawberry rhubarb pie last night! Yours is far prettier than mine, lovely job!

whoo hoo. Put the coffee on! I’ll be there in about, oh, 3 days. ;v)
It looks wonderful. Anything with yeast is out of my league. You might just be inspiring me.

okay what is rhubarb? Can you make this with just strawberries? Looks really good.

I’m so glad it came out for you! Yay! Congrats.
