My new big girl office, sort of

I didn’t get to posting today because it was my hubby’s birthday and I knew exactly what would make him happy AND it’s not what your thinking! Nope I knew he’d be happy with a clean house and let’s just say our standards are very very different. I’m definitely a little more on the lax side of things to say the least. So house clean I did and for one whole day our house is a shining, tomorrow you won’t even be able to tell the difference (I’m potty training a two year old after all) which makes me wonder why I even bothered in the first place. Oh right, happy hubby, how can I forget that!

My reward after all my hard work though was well worth the wait. I got to spend time organizing my new big girl office, except it’s not really an office, it’s more like an office area but it’s all mine nonetheless (I’ve always wanted to use the word nonetheless in a sentence, gee could it be my new big girl office is making me smarter already?).

About a year ago, when I apparently started taking up too much time on the family computer with my blogging “hobby”, my hubby purchased me a laptop. I love having a laptop and I was pretty impressed with the little laptop tray that I bought to go along with it. Nowadays though, with my blogging “hobby” turned blogging business, I spend far too much a lot more time on the computer and the ergonomics of my hand-me-down recliner and laptop tray started to take their tole on me.

So yesterday I finally purchased a big girl desk which technically, as per the friendly Staples salesgirl that sold it to me, is considered a “student” desk but hey I’m making progress nonetheless (look there’s that word again!). I even got myself a new chair to go with it, all for $120.00 ($60.00 each)! Here check it out.

Before:

After:

Now don’t go expecting this new desk to produce any type of superior results around here on this ole blog (I used a big word twice in this one post, what more do you want?) because really once a freak always a freak, ain’t no matter what kind of chair you sit in :)

Now I’m curious where do you blog?

Well currently my blogging space looks like your before picture. Though I do have a desk, it has a horribly un-ergonomic chair to go with it. I need a new chair, plus I am suppose to be getting a “big girl” office as well. It won’t be much but it will be mine. I can’t wait.

Your new blogging space looks great! It’s so much better. I would only suggest one more thing, a plastic carpet protector for under your rolling chair. You can see that the carpet is going to wear out quickly under the chair as it leaves marks behind. We have one and I love the way the chair is free to roll where I need it to. I also like the fact that if I want to someday move the desk, I don’t have to worry about the carpet being ruined.

most of the time i blog sitting on the couch with the laptop. occasionally i will blog at the kitchen bench or the dinning table. or i will use the Pc in the scrapping room.

    your new table looks lovely

Your new office area looks nice :) I especially like the added touch of the flowers.

I do most of my blogging sitting on the couch with my laptop. If I’m not on the couch, I may be found at the dining room table or (on the rare occasion that I get breakfast and laptop in bed) in my bed…lol

That looks great! Wanna get me one of those. Nice, classy choice.

I’ve got a laptop so I can blog anywhere in the house. Often standing up at a counter since my little one would do the blogging for me. Oh my. Often at Starbucks or Panera….

We still have a desktop and it is more comfortable in some respects. So I switch back and forth.

Where do I blog? Funny you should ask. Just last week I photographed my desk, before and after a good dusting and tidying up. You can see the pictures here:

This desk is in the master bedroom, upstairs.

Hope you enjoy your new office!

I usually blog in the recliner or on the couch with my laptop. No big girl office for me.

Tre chic! I love the new area. I usually blog from work…that way when I get home I can have family time.

Mostly on the couch with my laptop that my DH bought me for “writing.” I think he meant writing a novel, not blogging, but hey. :) Also some from work when it’s slow…

Well, currently I am using my laptop all over the house… our kitchen is under construction. But usually I work on my main computer in our basement. (I can’t always get to the basement b/c you have to go through the kitchen!) We have a desk set up down there. Honestly, I’m becoming quite addicted to my new laptop. I hope my other computer isn’t jealous! Anyhow, I love your new desk area. Cool desk & love the added flowers! Very chic!

I usually go to my “time out” chair (every mom needs one!).

Very nice! I actually have a whole room as an office, but that’s because I have my own business so I need my own “office space.” Of course, this year, I did buy another desk and installed the Midge in the room as well, but she’s rarely in here….

I would love to have an area just for me! Right now we all share the same computer, and I have to do all of our banking, property management, work on my new ZRII business, and try to blog in between telling everyone else that its my turn. The chair is so uncomfortable that you can’t sit back or it will fly backwards! I love your blog and have hopes of organizing, but will be moving to a new house in the next month, so watch out organizing world! Also, love the menus!

Happy B Day to your husband! I really like the look of the new desk!

I blog at the computer which we have in our living room. It is in full view for monitoring when our children are on. I guess that means I can be monitored too. ha ha ha :-)

I sometimes wish I had a lap-top so that I can be a little more flexible about where I blog, NONETHELESS, we only have a nice PC that is right in our living room on a desk by the window. :)

I wish I had a blogging corner! Currently if it’s nice out, I sit on the deck and blog, otherwise I unplug and sit at the kitchen table.

Our new kitchen (we just moved) has a little “nook” where I keep my laptop plugged in when I’m not using it.

I do about 90% of my blogging at work. I am in an office stuck to a computer 40hrs. a week so I still a few Hours, I mean moments to blog and catch up on other blogs!

  21. Posted July 11, 2008 at 7:12 am | Permalink

I meant I steal a few moments, not still. I guess I should proof-read before I post my comment! Too much staring at a computer!

Oh I love your new desk! I just have a little pressboard number, but would love something sleek like that. Our “office” is actually the back part of the living room, and it would be nice to have something like that instead of the big desks we use now.

I love it…funny I never even thought of Staples (even though that is where I got my computer armoire).

My husband bought me a laptop a couple of years ago for Christmas and I’ve never been the same! :)

I recently took over his Big Honkin’ Desk when he moved his computer over to the TV (that’s right…his computer is hooked directly up to his big screen television - talk about junkie!)

I love the new desk and chair…so official! I will have to come back and post pics of our “office area” which is just off our kitchen. For now, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your blog. As a matter of fact, I’ve given you a blogging award. Please stop by to pick it up when you get a chance: http://chocolateink-nancy.blogspot.com/2008/07/wow-my-first-award.html

I generally blog on the family computer, too, which is fine during naptime, but at night, it drives my husband nuts, too. So sometimes I use his laptop, which is nice because I can be downstairs on the couch or kitchen table with the family around doing their thing.

  37. Posted July 11, 2008 at 4:35 pm | Permalink

I started blogging while on bedrest, so I had to stay on my left side on the couch. My husband built us a computer stand that was the right height for me, and almost 3 years later, I still sit in that position to blog! Congrats on the big girl desk :)

I’m another laptop on the couch blogger. I miss my desk & chair but hubby has been working on the family room & moved everything into the garage.

Right now my computer desk is in a spare bedroom which is also the guest bedroom. When we moved here I figured I would not be using the computer very often because of the baby. However, my baby died a week later, so I ended up using the computer all the time. Now I’m trying to figure out if I could get it to fit somewhere else in the house. I would like it in the living room but I think it might be too small in there, we have just recently rearranged the furniture but are looking to purchase a new coffee table and end tables, then I will see how much room we have befor I make a decision if it will go in the living room. I’m thinking with an armoire that can be closed when we have guests so it isn’t an eyesore. My other thought was in the kitchen, eventually we plan to redo the kitchen and I thought if we could build in a desk area, that might be a spot, but my only concern about that is that is that it will end up being kind of clausiphobic since I spend a fair bit of time on the computer. And one of these days we plan to turn the basement into a family room which would be a good spot, but I might worry about flooding and there are no windows in the family room area, so I’m not sure if I want to put the computer down there or not. Maybe I’d be better off with a laptop. Oh well, I’ll figure it out. I’m sure I’ve said more than you want to know. ;)

My blog-writing space looks too much like your before picture. Although the recliner is relatively new, so it has a sheet over it to keep it nice, and I used a lap desk instead of a tray like yours. But I find it works for me.

I blog in my kitchen which has a desk. I do have a laptop but get this! it has no battery. My husband refuses to buy me a new battery so I am a plug in stationery laptop. I so want to purchase a battery though as I’d love to blog elsewhere in my house. Isn’t it the purpose of a laptop so you can go anywhere? Oh, I do have a craft room yes an entire room is dedicated to my scrapbooking (paper) but I hardly ever use my paper stuff any more now that I went digital. Good luck with your new desk and chair. Looks very comfy.

That looks great- it must feel so nice to sit at your beautiful new desk! Funny how things like a new desk or new business cards can make you feel all grown up, hey? :)

I blog at a desk given to me by my friend, and it was made by her husband. It’s simple, but it works. Unfortunatley, it’s a veyr cluttery little desk (well, it’s all out in the open, and I’ve added much clutter to it!). I’m hoping to get a new desk, with doors that close everything away, so that it looks nice and neat and tidy!

As for where my desk is, it’s in the family room (aka the playroom). Surrounded by toys and books, books and toys. It’s good, though, because the kids can do their thing and I can do mine (though I try to avoid being on the computer when they’re up).

Great office area! :) How exciting. And what a thrifty spender you are. :)

I have a laptop, too, with wireless internet, so I mainly blog from the oversized mission style chair in my living room. It’s big enough I can curl my legs under me and blog with the computer on my lap. I can angle to the side and kick one leg over the arm of the chair. Or I can rest the laptop on the flat, wooden, arm when it gets to hot and keep on typing! :P

Maybe when I’m a big time blogger like you I will cruise down the street to Steelcase (no really, it’s down the street) and get some Aeron chairs for myself. For now, I have a regular desk, but a big barrel chair for my office chair. It’s simultaneously comfy and awful.

Debby, this particular desk they tell me has been discontinued. Maybe you can find a store that still has one in stock. The only number I can find is 090234132943.
