I am a desperate woman! I am taking a seven hour flight on Saturday with a ONE year old by myself! Let me say it again….I am a desperate woman! How desperate am I? I am desperate enough to consider anything to keep my baby entertained and contained on a very long airplane ride…desperate enough to think I can make my own toy for him….desperate enough to think he’ll actually sit still and play with it! Yes my “tackle” today is to finish a project I started on the weekend. A craft project at that…..a craft project for a person who isn’t crafty is a very scary thing…..but a mother will do almost anything to keep the peace. So here is what I have done so far:
I’ve taken a piece of fleece and sewn on all sorts of things that had better I’m hoping will keep my little stinker angel busy for even a short period of time. Zippers, buttons, strings, tassles, beads, bows, pom poms, velcro and crinkly paper too! Today I’m going to sew a backing of some sort onto it and cut the sides into strips so that I can tie the front and back together all the way around for more hours minutes of amusement.
What was I thinking? It sounded good at the time……. I told you I was desperate…….

That’s a great idea and should be copied ! You know there are so many kids sometimes on a plane, even new borns ! Usually they are so curious that they don’t have any time to get bored and people are also very friendly with them (maybe some exceptions) The only thing you shouldn’t forget is something to chew on because of their ears. It can hurt a baby very much when the plane gets up or down because of the air pressure. Travelling mums always feed their babies during that time so they chew or give them a pacifier.
My tackles are not so difficult lol !

BRILLIANT girl!!! And good for you!!!
Here’s to hoping that it works! 🙂
Sue might want to borrow it when she flies to Italy to visit her inlaws, Julia in tow of course! 😉

I think your toy looks great! It has all the wonderful things one-year olds love to play with! What a great idea, and so creative of you!
Seven hours – yikes…I totally feel for you! I took my one year old (wiggle worm who can’t sit still for 2 seconds) on a plane this summer for a 3 hour flight (well 2 flights, one there, one back)…and that was more than enough for me! But really, she did pretty well for having to sit there that long. I can’t even imagine 7 hours…I am lifting up a prayer for you, that she will sleep much of the time, and be peaceful and content! I think the best thing you can do is pray….a LOT! God can handle everything far better than we can!

Great idea! There was a great idea list I read once about traveling with babies. Let’s see, I can’t seem to find the list, but the advice I remember is bring lots of gallon ziplock baggies and extra clothes for you and your kiddo.
What am I thinking? You’re the organizing junkie! You’re going to have as much fun packing as I would!

Great idea! I do have one word for you though….BENADRYL…that is all I am saying. lol It works..I know a lot of people freak when I say that but hey if it helps them sleep even part of the way it is worth it haha.
I love your blog I have it saved to my favorites that I read every day and I am using it as inspiration over the three day weekend to organize my house..especially my homeschooling section!

What a great idea! I’d love to have one of those! Maybe that will be my next project. Yesterday I finally finished a quilt that had been lying around for 4.5 years waiting for me to do the edges.

Very cute! I feel your desperation. The last 2 summers we drove 81/2 hrs to the beach in the car with a toddler and preschooler and I am a desperate woman. Each year I’ve spent 100.00 on little toys to keep in the front seat of the car and hand back to them to keep them occupied. My biggest savior has been food and the dvd player. Good luck and God speed.

That’s a neat idea. Years ago they used to have “quiet books” people made with the same idea, only as a book made out of fabric pages with some of the same things. I’m sure your little one will enjoy it! At least for a while. 🙂 I used to take a mixture of old, familiar things with new little things to pull out along the way. And Cheerios — whoever invented those was a genius.

Thank you so much everyone for your encouragement and support! I really appreciate it. I love all the suggestions too. I’m expecting the worst so hopefully it won’t be as bad as I think it will be. He is a busy little thing and hates to sit still, oh and did I mention I get motion sick…ugg. It will all be worth it though once I’m there 🙂 I’ll post an updated picture soon once I get it done.

Don’t forget to bring your wipes!
I thought it would be a good idea to feed my newborn as we were taking off to help relieve the pressure in his ears. He ate a lot and it seemed to work except instead of burping he did a projectile vomit all over me, my seat and the seat in front of me! Unfortunetly this happend within the first thirty minutes of our four hour flight -nasty! The people sitting around me were not impressed at all (it doesn’t help that the air is recycled either). Man it sure stunk a lot – that was the longest flight of my life!
Good luck with your trip!
