Works for Me Wednesday – Magazine article storage

I LOVE to read magazines and often I find an article of interest that I want to keep to refer to later on. I might find a great kid’s craft, a health article, a cleaning tip, etc.. Rather than keep the whole magazine I rip out the page I want to keep, throw or give away the magazine and then file the page into my “great magazine reads” organizing holder that looks like this:

This little container holds letter size hanging files and I’ve labelled them according to category…ie: crafts, kids stuff, health..etc. I keep it in my study on a bookshelf and it is quick and easy to drop articles into. Now whenever I need an article I know I’ve read, I don’t have to search very far because I have them all in one place. It really does work for me! The trick here though is that this is the only spot I have for miscellaneous articles so once its full I need to go through and purge some out. It is my designated space!

I do something similar, I tear out the pages I want and put them into a binder with page protectors. I love this idea as well! Thanks for sharing =)

Great idea! I use the binders because I like to flip through the pages. It’s like reading only the best part of a decorating magazine.

Putting them into page protectors is a pain though. I might have to switch to files like you.

You know I was totally going to mention the page protector/binder idea as another option! Too funny. I would have to say I’m the lazy organizer here because the page protectors would be one extra step and then I’d have to have a “to file into the binder” file that I might never get around to filing..lol. Filing isn’t one of my strong points :) Laura

Love that designated space idea coming up again. I do like this better than a binder, too, because of your very comment!

Thank you for this idea! I’m always trying to figure out a way to save these little slips of paper with all the great ideas!

I think that this would be very manageable for anyone!

Great idea! I do the same thing with pulling articles out of magazines. But I have a filing cabinet for most things, and a binder for recipes.
If I am just going through one magazine at a time, I sometimes go ahead and put the articles in the proper file instead of the folder. But often I go through a few at once and put all the articles in a folder, and then later sort them into the different files. Since there is usually a bit of time inbetween, some natural purging goes on while I sort them.

Once again, I’m impressed. I, too, cut articles out of magazines…but all mine end up un-sorted, and un-filed…but in a nice pretty basket next to the sofa! :) I get points for the basket, right? I really like your method, though…

I do the binder thing as well, but this is an awesome idea as usual! Thanks for sharing.

Great idea! The key for me though, would be the regular purge. I keep so many articles and things that I just know I’m gonna revisit one day and that day never comes. :V)

I need to start doing this. I’m great at organizing on the computer, but not so much in real life. I have a stack of magazines that I saved for some reason. I need to go through them and tear out whatever I wanted and get rid of them.

Filing them this way is a great tip, Laura. I always go through my magazines and save the articles I know I’ll use or send to someone. But I never thought to file them like this. Thanks for the idea.

This is fabulous! I just started ripping out pages over the summer, and I have them in folders in my binder so far. I planned to eventually put them into page protectors… The time and expense is my excuse. :> I used to glue the really WOW craft ideas (small ones) into a blank book. That was before my mommy days, and I was only reminded of that book here. :) I’m going to look through it when I take some down time.

i started a project with magazine pages, but never finished it. i’ll have to go back to it. i was putting the cut out pages into a binder with page protectors, so i could look through it like a book.

Thanks for sharing your filing idea. I have been keeping my articles in a beautiful notebook. I call it my home management binder.
