As many long time readers here will know, my husband doesn’t share my love of organization. He essentially thinks organizing is all about putting your stuff into neat piles and that’s basically it. Umm no, there’s just a wee bit more to it than that, he should totally read my blog. He never wants to part with anything because he just might need it someday. Luckily his piles are contained to just a few places in the house, one of which is the garage. The garage is his domain and I try to respect his space. However I park my van in the garage so I do need some available space. After 28 years together though I have learned that there is no point nagging or pushing him to let go of things. Eventually he will, out of the blue, purge some stuff all on his own. Until then, I simply try and help him find places to contain ALL.THE.THINGS.
This week’s organizing fix project comes to us courtesy of Keter. They provided me with an Optima Wonder Utility Cabinet and I knew exactly how I wanted to use it in the garage. My husband is awesome at looking after and maintaining our vehicles. However with that comes a lot of products that need a home as opposed to them being scattered here, there and everywhere. Plus my son has his own car now and he has started his own collection of car care items. This cabinet provided the perfect solution to keep all the car care related products in one place. Cue the angels singing!
The problem with products being scattered about in different spaces and areas of your home is you forget what you have especially when you can’t find what you need when you need it. Then more is purchased which just perpetuates the cycle of too much stuff and not enough space.
Here’s how the cabinet turned out.
I had so much fun organizing this space. My husband is a good sport and gave me free reign over setting up the inside of it. He humors me knowing how happy it makes me. I’m pretty sure he couldn’t care less about the different categorization of products but it just looks so nice and gets me all giddy. My husband does however care about the fact that this cabinet sits up off the ground which is necessary for our snowy slushy days when the garage floor gets all wet. As you can see in the picture, the old dresser we use to store paint supplies isn’t ideal because the bottom gets all wet and soaks up the water.
In addition, my husband also really appreciates that because this cabinet is made of resin, it can easily be wiped down especially considering the products being stored in there, specifically oil, can get pretty messy. So I’ll let my husband care about those kinds of details while I take care of all the fun stuff. We really do complement each other well 🙂
The bins I used on the inside are really old, I’ve had them for at least eight years. Some of you who have been with me that long might remember I purchased them at a grocery store of all places! They have cycled their way around my house from kid’s rooms to my entryway closet to the garage. The number of products I had to categorize was crazy town. I don’t even understand what half of them do….we’ve got waxes, shines, polishes, tire stuff, headlight stuff, cleaners, foams….oh my goodness. Now I know how my husband must feel about all my different hair products! I think I did okay though narrowing it all down into 5 different categories.
The chalkboard labels and the white baskets I used to hold rags are from the dollar store.
Here’s another neat featured about this cabinet that both my husband and I can appreciate. Each shelf on the left hand side has a removable section in the front that you can slide out creating space for brooms or other long handled items as this video demonstrates.
How cool is that? Two other highlights I think are awesome…each shelf holds up to 66 pounds and a lock can be added to the outside of this cabinet which is a really nice feature if you have young kids and don’t want them to get into dangerous chemicals. Would also be great in a laundry room to store household cleaners.
I just love how it turned out. It basically was a win win for both us. I get all these products up off the garage floor making room for my van and my husband gets to see everything he owns in one spot so maybe he won’t buy more. Ok that might not really happen but at least there’s still some extra space in the cabinet to grow 🙂
