You aren’t alone, so is mine.
This is the last space to be organized since our move but now it’s getting cold outside and I want to be able to park my van in there. As you can see I’ve got my work cut out for me. It’s time to tackle the task.
To be continued…..

Mine is a mess too.
However, the last time my husband decided to clean it out (It’s 90% his junk in there after all), he destroyed the inside of the house trying to organize the garage! He eventually built shelves on the 2 side walls and a nice big table in the middle for him to work on his projects/wepons/etc. (the garage is too small to park his big Titan truck and/or my Jeep so we both just park outside anyway).
But that lasted maybe a month and it turned back into a cluttered mess. I say we need to purge!
Good luck with the garage cleaning!

Thanks Nicole, I have to admit I’m a little afraid 🙂

We sort our garage every year on June 16… its a national holiday over here. We didn’t last year I was pregnant. We didn’t this year we couldn’t face it. And now it is desperate…. really desperate – how does that happen in a room we never use? I just can’t stand the thought of it!!!

The mantra I’m using is one small chunk at a time…over and over and over again 🙂

That is hubby’s domain. It looks pretty clean but don’t open any of the cupboards. LOL.
Laura says
Problem is he probably won’t do it so if I want my vehicle in there, it’s up to me. Sigh! Garages aren’t so fun for me 🙂
Anna @ Frugal For You says
Our garage always looks pristine… ok we live in an apartment. We don’t have to worry about that. Just as well. But can’t wait to learn for future reference.

I am so glad to see that your garage is a mess…because so is ours! I hate hate hate our garage and cannot wait to see what you do with yours and hopefully will be able to get some great ideas and tips from you!
Laura says
My way of dealing with it all is just to get rid of it…so much less work that way. Unfortunately most of the stuff is my husband’s so I have no choice but to make it work because he has a small aversion to getting rid of stuff 🙂
Kim says
I can’t WAIT to see what you do with this…ours is WAY too cluttered!!! I’d LOVE to pay someone to help me organize ours. I just can’t ever seem to find the right organizing things for my needs!!! LOL
Laura says
Definitely a big job and if you can afford it, I highly recommend the help of a professional organizer. They are worth their weight in gold!

I spent 5 hours organizing a client’s garage today! And it’s not even done yet, but she is getting some great cabinets built in so we have a place to put everything. I think I will have muscles hurting tomorrow I didn’t even know existed. 😉
Laura says
Okay seriously can you help me come do mine? Just think how much fun we’d have! 🙂
Tanna says
Ha ha, you know I would if I could! We would have a blast!

We just moved from a house we lived in for 16 years. My garage is a wreck and I have hardly unpacked anything. I really need to get to that soon don’t you think?
Ann-Marie says
That’s not a messy garage…… you can still see floor and walk around! 🙂
My garage was never that fabulous (full of camping kit and garden toys and furniture) but since we had a bedroom built over it and lost the rafters (and all that lovely storage space for rollmats and sleeping bags) it’s been a total disaster!
Add to that my school things (I was a teacher for many years until recently and will be going back to it once my youngest is at school herself) and we can’t even squeeze through from front to back!
Good luck with your makeover!…………one day I’ll get to mine!

What do you do with a husband who “re-organizes” (think…makes messes) when you take the time to organize the garage? And I’m not much better. We park my Trailblazer in the attached garage, but the three car garage beside our house is always a mess. Any ideas?
Dr. Laura @ WhoIsLaura.com says
Actually, your garage looks pretty decent compared to mine. It’s on my list of things to clean as well 🙂 And, although I can still park my car in mine (thank heavens for lots of extra space), I don’t like to clean the garage when it’s freezing outside, which means I need to do it soon. Thanks for the reminder 😉

I have a home daycare so ours is full of toys that are necessary for keeping the kids occupied. I would like to try to find wall hooks to hang them but they are so bulky it wouldn’t really gain me that much room.

I will have garage envy! Ours is so full of stuff that it could burst at the seams! I haven’t parked in there in about 14 years or so!

Soooooo glad you posted this! I am very much forward to seeing what plans you have for yours. When we moved to our very first house with a garage I was super excited to finally be able to park the cars inside. Now 4 months later, we still can’t find space to park the cars. When the homes here say a 2 car garage, they really mean a 2 compact car garage LOL. We’ve been able to fit one car but had a tough time getting out the car door, walking around to get into the house, accidently rubbing against the car and ending up with dirty clothes. Thankfully in South FL we don’t have real winters so weather is not an issue it’s time. My biggest downfall is the amount of Christmas decorations I have. I LOVE to decorate for the holidays!

We are in the process of organizing our garage too. We just moved in a few months ago and the garage was a dumping ground for everything that hadn’t been unpacked yet. We also have a ton of stuff that we use only a few times a year. We bought some hyloft units from our local hardware store for over our garage doors- like this: http://www.amazon.com/HyLoft-540-45-Inch-Overhead-Storage/dp/B0002IGHKM. Now all of our camping gear, pool toys, etc., are out of my way. YAY! We still have some purging and organizing to do, but the garage looks so much better. Can’t wait to see what you do with yours!

I suppose this is the one highlight of on-street parking!
I can’t wait to see what you do with it.

My hubby has been cleaning out our garage so that I can park in it for a year now. This morning as I took our baby and toddler out to the car in the pouring rain I grumbled at him big time. I actually threatened to throw it all away if room isn’t made for my car. Considering that we have a 2 car garage he should be able to clear out a space for one car.
What is it about garages that attracts all the “stuff” anyway?
Lilianna Grace says
My garage is a mess to me. I still can park 2 cars in it though! It seems like it is always a process because stuff always gets shoved in there. I have reorganized most of the garage, all our family photos, my recipes, my closet, and my office. It has taken all summer, but it’s sooo worth it! Thanks for the list link too! I am such a list person!

Question: how do you set up a garage so that kids can pull their bikes/toys out easily without damaging cars and so that gardening tools are also easy to pull out? I’ve tried a couple different tactics but they don’t seem to be working (since one bike is living outdoors and the tools still aren’t easy to get to…)

wished I could SEE a spot on our garage floor.

I should have added I had a 2 1/2 car garage at the homestead and not once did my car ever make it in the garage. TOO full of bikes, decorations etc.We now have a 1 car garage and hubby came in and told me we now have 2 lock ups and still have stuff at the old homestead our daughter is dealing with…did I hear flea market as it’s too cold for garage sale( where I would sell the whole garage including the land it sits on LOL)

Whose garage isn’t a mess? I did some downsizing this Friday since my sis and bro were coming. I decided some things of my mom’s needs gone through. What I didn’t want, I let them choose then gave my daughter-in-law and son a chance at the rest. Rest was pretty much garbage and a few recyclables. Still have more to go through, maybe the blankets will go and some more clothes, as she’s in a nursing home. More to weed through. I did get some old checks from the 1980 era shredded, thanks to shred day a couple weeks ago–free! It’s a process and thanks for the inspiration. Hugs!

Yes! Mine looks very similar. I got to watching Hoarders a couple weeks ago..went on a clean out the clutter spree…stacked it all up in the garage until “I could price it for next year’s garage sale”. Still sitting there. Needs out SOON before we get weather that necessiates the Suburban being in the garage. I do childcare and have two children of my own that need to be gotten to/from school. Don’t want to stand in the rain/snow buckling 6 car seats, would MUCH rather do it from my climate controlled garage!

I despise cleaning the garage! We just tackled ours last weekend. The Rubbermaid tracking system was super easy and very affordable. I liked it because you could use the vertical space on the walls very easily. Good luck!!!
