The following is a guest post about four different ways to organize kids craft supplies from regular contributor, Yuni at Love Your Abode.
Summer with kids at home can only mean two things. Lots of grocery shopping and lots of messes. Am I right? Summer vacation is in full swing and although I love not having to wake up at the crack of dawn and prepare 3 lunch boxes, I could do without the constant messes everywhere. Once school was out, the kids brought home all of their work along with their boxes of craft supplies. For almost two weeks, they sat on the kitchen table and on the floor in my office until one day, I decided to tackle the mess and figure out a good method to this madness. If organizing anything seems daunting to you, I recommend starting small and committing to one thing or area. Today, I’m sharing how I organized all of the kids’ markers, pens, pencils and crayons.
1. Utensil Caddy
A while ago, I bought this utensil caddy on clearance from Kirklands. I bought it because it was cute, cheap and perfect for not only utensils but markers. I love how easily you can carry it from room to room.
2. Buckets and Trays
When organizing art supplies, this is also a great time to pare down your items. Kids don’t need a hundred crayons and markers. I used this time to test out each marker and pen and discard the empty ones. I even went to town and sharpened all of the color pencils! There’s no stopping me once I get started.
I love using trays to corral like items together. I used galvanized buckets to hold the supplies and placed some favorite craft items in the basket tray. My kids can easily bring it to their room and I don’t mind it sitting on our kitchen table.
3. Clear Container or Shoe Box
Another way to keep craft supplies under control is to allow each child to have his/her own clear container or shoe box. Let them fill it with the art items of their choice. I like this method because it keeps the supplies completely out of sight when not in use. Each child is in charge of taking care of their own supplies. The only negative to this method is when they can’t find their containers. Doh!
4. Coke Crate
Lastly, think outside the box! I shared this vintage coke crate a while back on my blog and shared some unique ways I put it to use. When organizing anything, think of creative ways to display ordinary everyday items.
I love using my coke crate this way because it’s completely functional and unique. I hope you found these tips helpful. Now, go tackle those supplies!
