Hello! It’s time for another post in the Peaceful Organized Homes series for 2014. Click on that link to catch up with us if you want to 🙂
Recently I came across a great post from a new blogging friend, Lisa Jacobson over at Club 31 Women. Lisa’s post is titled 12 Simple Things That Can Bring Peace Into Your Home. Such a great article about how sometimes we need to look beyond our messes to what is really important.
Her list of 12 simple things to bring peace into your home includes:
- Speak kindly
- Gather regularly
- Laugh readily
- Work cheerfully
- Give generously
- Apologize humbly
- Forgive quickly
- Hug freely
- Pray frequently
- Stand firmly
- Cheer loudly
- Love genuinely
Please take a moment to go over and read Lisa’s post here as she elaborates on each of the above points. Notice that not one of those points speaks specifically to managing clutter. And while I think it’s important to get a handle on the amount of stuff we own and the clutter all that stuff produces, it’s equally important to keep our attitudes in check when wanting to create peaceful homes. For it’s our attitude that determines how our day will go, it will determine whether we are going to be controlled by our circumstances or fight the fight whatever our situation may be. You see, as women, mothers and wives, we play such an important role in leading by example, not only to our families but to those that visit us in our homes as well. Constantly beating ourselves up or apologizing for the way our homes look will get us nowhere but further behind. I find that when I’m frustrated with all that needs to be done and feeling overwhelmed is when I’m most likely to “forget” how to love genuinely, speak kindly or hug freely. I let my circumstances dictate my attitude and it doesn’t have to be this way.
There are many things in life we have no control over like sickness, traffic and weather for instance. BUT we do control our attitudes, thank goodness for that. Whatever you are facing right now, there is always something to be grateful for.
If you hadn’t had a chance to laugh readily yet today or just get silly, don’t put it off. Sing some opera at the top of your lungs, do a crazy dance in your living room or watch some silly You Tube videos with your kids. It really does work and the best part is it’s contagious. One of my favorite sayings is “a day without laughter is a day wasted”. Oh how I love a good belly laugh!!
For others it might mean overcoming a fear by inviting someone over this week despite what your home looks like to love on that person amongst the socks on the floor (I swear they breed in the night!) and the piles of paper on the counter.
How has your attitude been lately? Does it need a bit of an adjustment to help you create a more peaceful organized home in 2014?
You’ve got this!

Something that I have found that has helped to re-shape my attitude lately is yoga. I always felt that I didn’t have time to work that into my schedule…. but now that I have made time (I do an online class so I can just turn it on, practice for one hour, and I’m done- no driving back/forth to the studio), I am much more open to forgiving myself for what I didn’t get done in a day, happier inside, and more open to taking more time with the kids to hug more and listen more.
Attitude in a household really does make so much of a difference!
