I mentioned earlier this week that I’m heading out to the Allume Conference next week in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Allume is a Christian blogging conference and many of my long time blogging buddies that I’ve made over the past 6.5 years will be there. However there is one thing I am super nervous about and I’m almost embarrassed to mention it for fear you’ll think I’m crazy. Oh wait, I am crazy! So apparently I’m worrying for nothing 🙂
For those that don’t carry the “allergic to chaos” gene this may be hard for you to understand. BUT truth be told chaos makes me nervous and overwhelmed and unable to think straight. There I said it. So why am I worried about chaos? Well besides the travel to get there which is always chaotic for me it seems, I will also be rooming with three other ladies in one teeny tiny room. Four ladies in one room screams chaos doesn’t it? As in stuff everywhere because hotel rooms are small with not a lot of space to put stuff, not because I think my roomies will be slobs. Hahaha…right about now they are probably dialing the Hilton begging for another room.
I get it, I’m weird, what can I say. However I’m sure it will all work itself out beautifully. I’m not really as neurotic as I seem, I promise!! I’m also not the neatest packer in the world as you’ll see which is a little odd for an organizing junkie I know. My suitcase will be a mess with my indecisiveness over what to wear. I always bring too much just to be on the “safe side” and then I’m still never happy with my choices. Sheesh I think I have more issues than I realized. But in good news my toiletry bag is nice and small and compact after I did a makeover on it a few years ago. Whew after the ridicule I took at the last blogging conference I attended about my enormous toiletry bag, I’ve thankfully got that one squared away now 🙂
So Brooke over at Surprised by Life is hosting a roundup of “10 Things My Roomie Should Know About Me” and I thought it would be fun to participate.
So here it goes:
- I don’t drink coffee but I definitely think I should. Because mornings for me are rough. I’m not a morning person and am just a teeny tiny bit grumpy in the am. Just a little bit. I do however love tea so I make sure to have one of those in the morning.
- Having said that, if I happen to know someone else in the room is not a morning person I take great delight in being annoyingly happy just to get a rise out of that person. It’s fun for me what can I say. I’ll eventually get a smile out of them if it’s the last thing I do!
- I’m a night owl and don’t go to bed too early. Plus I can’t fall asleep without reading which is a problem for those that can’t fall asleep with a light on. Maybe I’ll bring my flashlight to read under the covers. I’m nice like that 🙂
- I’m a silence filler. In awkward moments of silence I can’t keep my mouth shut. I feel I must fill the silence with my jabbering nonsense because that’s the way I roll. Sorry!
- I love to laugh and laugh and laugh and I love to make other people laugh too….usually at my own expense though. I’ve been known to do some crazy things to get a laugh and if it means I have to start doing a little Gangnam Style dancing well then that’s what I’ll do. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
- Crowds and noise make me antsy. I can only handle it for so long before I have to find a nice quiet spot to collect my thoughts.
- I have hair issues which means it takes me awhile to get ready in the morning. I hope I don’t wake you with my blow drying.
- I can’t sit still for long or I fall asleep. I kid you not. If I’m sitting in a session I can get very sleepy regardless of how entertaining the speaker may be. I will twitch a lot and doodle hearts on a paper that I then color in precisely to keep my mind alert. And if that doesn’t work, please please give me a poke or two to wake me up!
- I’m from Canada which means you might expect to hear “eh” come out of my mouth often. I really don’t think I say it that much though but you never know eh?
- I love to shop! If someone at any time says the words “hey who wants to go hang out in Target for a couple of hours?”, I will so be there. We don’t have Target stores in Canada (next year!) so there would be no holding me back. Target has a lot of great organizing stuff that I would love to go drool all over. It’s a sickness what can I say.
So there you have it. My roomies are either wondering right at this moment what in heavens they’ve gotten themselves into or maybe just maybe are excited about the possibilities of hanging out with a crazy lady that will not rest until she can make you giggle 🙂
Jill Robson says
Hi Laura
I can sympathize about the need for alone time. I get overwhelmed in crowds! I’m glad i am not the only Canadian who CAN’T WAIT for Target next year. I hate to shop, but organizing stores and book stores, i could shop for HOURS. Good luck at the conference, look forward to hearing all about it.
Laura says
Hi Jill, I was in the West Edmonton Mall on the weekend and saw the big sign that said Target coming 2013…whoot! I’ve only been to one once when on holidays in Florida and it was awesome for organizing stuff at great prices too. Can’t wait!!
Leanne says
Oh my gosh we have so much in common. We would get along great, but not in the mornings. I’m not a morning person either. I have to make myself be pleasant until the kids leave for school then I exercise and feel better. I fall asleep if I sit still during the day too, luckily that doesn’t happen often (except when I’m driving sometimes, not good). Have a great time at your conference!
Laura says
I tend to fall asleep when I’m driving too! I have to listen to podcasts, eat popcorn and drink diet coke in order to stay awake. Thankfully those things work, whew!
Tammy Skipper (@Tammy_Skipper) says
SO wish I was still going to be one of those roommates but maybe next year…I think you sound like a hoot and now…now your roommates know they can leave the room in chaos just to get a rise out of you 😉 have a great time!
Laura says
Hahahaha….isn’t that the truth Tammy! I guess I should be on my best behavior in the mornings eh? You will be missed!
Annie says
Oh how I wish I could be your roomie…remember PG!!! There were 6 of us in that room!! Your roomies will love you…and all your craziness!!
Laura says
Yes I remember and I held it together pretty good, don’t you think? lol We really need to do that again. Miss you like crazy!!
Ginny @Organizing Homelife says
This was so fun to read, Laura. 🙂 I’m so looking forward to meeting in person! Can’t wait till next week!!
Kim @ Homesteader's Heart says
I’m not kidding, we’re sisters! Being from Maine we visited Canada a lot and I picked up the “eh” and so I sound a bit out of place in Florida. LOL! You and I would get along great as roomies. To bad I won’t be there to make it happen. LOL!
I hope you have a great time.
Hugs
Kim
Laura says
Yes I remember you saying that before, hopefully we’ll be able to meet one day in real life 🙂
Kim @ Homesteader's Heart says
I always say that eventually everyone comes to Florida for a vacation. So if and when you do, We are so hooking up! 🙂
aurie says
quick – what’s the number for the Hilton???!
Just kidding 🙂 It will be fun to meet you and I’m sure that we’ll end up having a blast in our smallish room. I’m kind of the opposite – I’m in bed by 9 usually and up at 6am. Of course, depending on all the fun meet ups that might change and then I will be super grumpy in the morning too 🙂 Ahem….
Mrs. Wilson says
As much as I secretly wish you were coming to Blissdom instead, I hope you have a fabulous time. And I may have to steal this meme. 🙂
Laura says
Have a good time at your conference Jen!!

I live in Southern Ontario and our Target is opening in time for Christmas this year!!! I’m quite excited! Enjoy your conference!
Laura says
Wow so jealous! I’ll have to make sure to tell my sister who lives in Ontario to check it out!!
Abby says
That’s so awesome that you’re going to Harrisburg! I’m originally from a town very close to Harrisburg (but I now live in Tennessee). It’s a beautiful area of the country, if I do say so myself!
Susanne says
I’m a teeny bit grumpy in the morning too, especially now that’s it’s dark when I get up! I take notes at meetings, lots of them, so I don’t doze off.
Have a wonderful time!
Sarah says
You need to check out this site…
http://theviviennefiles.blogspot.ca/
And check out her posts on packing. The whole site is awesome, frankly…all about curating a wardrobe which really is only being organized anyway.
The packing tips and ideas are fantastic, though!!!
Elizabeth says
Laura, have fun at the conference. I was the same way about Target and we finally got one 12 years ago, or so BUT before then I would drive 2 and a half hours just to be at my favorite store! I moved to SC from Utah about 15 years ago. My friends at church laughed when I asked them where the Target was! They told me the closest one was in Columbia…off to Columbia I went like at least 3 times a year! Then got one just 30 minutes away…go there 2-3 times a month!!!
I talk too much , too when no one is talking. I get really nervous around people I don’t know very well, and the jabberwocky comes out. My husband reminds me all the time, but I still do it! I also take lots of clothes when I travel…I always change my mind, so I take more shirts than I need to suit my moods. You are not crazy, just normal to me!!!
Ellen Ross says
I’m in harrisburg. youll love it here!
Wendy M. says
I’m in Harrisburg too. Hit me up if you have any questions!
Laura says
Yes how close is the nearest Target to the Hilton? I really want to go!! 🙂
Wendy M. says
Probably about 15-20 minutes with traffic. It’s at 4600 High Pointe Blvd
Harrisburg, PA, 17111.
Sarah says
Just a heads up that the term Spastic is quite a no-no for your readers in the UK. There’s some info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spastic if you’re interested. Love your blog! I’m always a little shocked when I see you use that term in everyday speak, because no one would dare to say it over here. Have fun at the conference! 🙂
Laura says
Wow I had no idea, thank you for letting me know. I appreciate it! I took it out of my post and changed what I was trying to say around a little bit. Thank you!
Sarah says
Have fun shopping in the States! 😉
Tracy says

Maria Welke says
Laura, your roomies are blessed to have you! Be your wonderful self and enjoy your time immersed in and around people who share your interest in blogging and even some fellow organizers! I am also a crazy person and can empathize with your angst. Just try to relax and have fun. The roomies are gonna LOVE you 🙂
Laura says
Ahh thanks Maria!!
Amy Tilson says
Looking forward to meeting you. I’m bummed that Tammy isn’t coming, too. We were going to carpool. Please tell me you have been to a Container Store, I will be sad if you haven’t. Great list!
Laura says
I have been to a Container Store…I went to one last year while in NY. So fun!
Annette says
This was awesome!
I don’t drink coffee either…but should.
Jess says
I don’t drink coffee either, or tea. People think I’m weird because of that.
I kind of go into power/bouncer mode in large, loud, boisterous crowds lol
Kelley Hagemeister says
I am a silence filler too..and even though I’m an extrovert, something about being around all those women makes me very insecure at times. :/ Yay for target, and you will just love Aurie! I can’t imagine her ever being grumpy! lol!
Lani says
We totally could have been roommates Laura!! I’m a tea drinker, reader, and all that! Have so enjoyed getting to knowyou so far! 🙂
