This is a subject near and dear to my heart. I get many emails from overwhelmed readers asking for help getting started. It is overwhelming if you look around your house and are burdened by piles and piles of clutter. It can literally stop you dead in your tracks wanting to bury your head in the sand hoping it will go away all on its own. I’ve written a guest post today over at Organizing Your Way titled 10 Steps to Avoid Organizing Overwhelm and while I’ve written similar posts in the past I definitely think it important to continue to talk about it. These are very practical tips to help you break through the immobilizing wall of overwhelm in order to conquer your clutter once and for all. Come find out how you can make that happen.

Hi Laura! We’re redoing our kitchen, and I’d love some ideas from you or other readers here to help me out – I can’t seem to find what I need.
We’re building in what will become our homestation, with a 4’x7′ magnetic vertical surface over a desktop area. Under the desks the kids can put their backpacks etc, and it offers us additional seating for homework or extra dinner guests. It’s surrounded and topped with cabinets for office and craft supplies (I’m so happy about this, I can’t get it across in print!)
But my issue is, I don’t know how to make the best use of that vertical space to get us organized. I want a BIG calendar (monthly) and can’t seem to find the type I want. I’d also love something to sort papers in for school like the Fridge File – at least I know where to find that one lol. I have some magnetized little mesh boxes for magnets to hang stuff up, Expo markers for the calendar, things like that.
If you could do an area like that from scratch, what would you recommend? I’m in the “overwhelmed” part right now with my office, craft stuff, homework stuff, files.. so I’d love to hear your thoughts on how to “Set This Up For Success”.
Thanks!

What a wonderful post. I have gotten rid of so much “stuff” it is energizing, freeing. I gave most away to the free store in town. I am still continuing to declutter and also live a more sustainable lifestyle. I only wish I had done this 20 years ago! Thank you!
