If you are new to 52 Weeks of Organizing, catch up here!
Can you believe we are on week #15? I love seeing the changes that are taking place each week. You ladies are making it work!
I really loved reading how oneshabbychick is focusing on making some new habits based on some of the tips from my book, Clutter Rehab. She is thinking through the steps and setting herself up for success. She’s analyzing what isn’t currently working and mapping out a plan to get where she wants to be. I love that she’s not leaving it to chance. You can read her great post here.
I also spent some time this past weekend organizing my own front entryway closet. It was time (or so I thought) to rotate out the winter coats and boots and bring in the spring gear (I just don’t have enough room to keep it all in one closet). Would you believe that after doing all that, it snowed today, uggg! Not nice! Anyway here’s how my closet turned out:
before
after:
and my weekend purge pile:
I’ll go into more detail next week about my closet but I wanted to give you just a quick sneak peek today 🙂 There is something in my after picture that has changed my life, can you guess what it is?
Also don’t miss out on the Closet Storage Giveaway I have going on right now until April 28th!
I’m excited to hear about what you’ll be working on this week. If you haven’t created your 52 weeks of organizing list yet, it’s not too let. Print off your free printable today!
Questions:
1. Will you be tackling a closet this week? If so, don’t forget to follow the PROCESS to make it quick and simple.
2. Did you run into any road blocks last week?
3. Since starting this challenge can you name one habit you’ve been able to develop that has stuck?

I love looking at other people’s organizing posts (esp. kitchens and closets!) I’ve done pretty well with our closets, and keep them maintained. Just working on tweaking some of my kitchen storage right now.
Jutta@Organized Living Solutions says
There is something very very gratifying in looking at the bags of stuff you have taken out of your closet. We are having a flood in the north of Namibia so yesterday my daughter and I went through our closets and took out lots of clothes to donate to the flood victims. Purging is even more fun when you know that your things will be really appreciated.

Oh no! Snow! Your closet still looks great. Good job.

I linked up my recent linen closet make over:-)

Oooh, your closet looks great! Love the blue bins on top… amazing what a little clear space between the bins does to make it look so clean and tidy! (Must try that!)
I WILL do my closet this week. Thanks for the direction. I’ve been meaning to, but keep putting it off. And now that the weather is changing, I really need to purge and simplify.
The one habit I’ve stuck with is the 10 minute tidy and maintaining the spaces I’ve organized. Not perfectly… it is incredible how insidious clutter is and how quickly it comes back! I feel like the Anti-Clutter Vigilante. I need a cape.

My guess to what has changed your life: New hangers? =) It looks great!
Sharon says
OK, sorry if you’ve posted this, but I’m joining in late.
What are you putting in the bins that are on the top closet shelf? I love how clean it looks, but wonder how you suggest separating the items.
We’re about to add a shelf to our boys’ closet, and I am now eager to tackle it!
Thanks. 🙂
Laura says
Hi Sharon, in the top bins are my husband’s ball caps, some of my summer hats and sunglasses, etc.
Anisa says
Thanks for featuring my boys’ closet! It’s been great to keep all their stuff organized! You have really inspired me! I did my own bedroom closet this week. It felt so great!

This is a long shot, but do you have any suggestions for using the space in a my nearly 3-year-old boy’s closet. Right now he loves to take everything apart and does so every day during nap time. I hang all of his clothes high in the closet so that he won’t empty them out of the dresser every day. Even then, sometimes he reaches the longest ones and pulls them all down, breaking some hangers in the process. Basically all that’s in his room is his bed and clothes in the closet. A small plastic drawer set and laundry hamper gets wheeled out during nap time. I do have a few bins up on the shelf in the closet, but most of the closet is dead space. Do you know of any way to child proof a closet with sliding doors? Maybe some closet organizers that are easy to childproof?
Anisa says
We took the sliding doors off the closet. I make my toddlers clean up the messes they make so, (hopefully) they learn to pick up after themselves and not make such a big mess in the future. 🙂
Diana says
Thanks, Anisa. We do have him clean up, particularly if he wants to earn privileges like watching TV. He just loves taking things apart and right now in the middle of the “terrible two’s” I’m just not sure if that’s a battle I should choose (there are so many battles as it is). So I’m trying to make it as hard as possible for him to make the mess in the first place so I’m not setting him up for failure in the keep-your-room-clean department. But I am really wondering how to get him to value his possessions enough to treat them well. I’ve pared down the number and make him clean up. I even throw some away (in front of him) when he’s been too destructive, but I could probably do more of all of those.
Another matter entirely is the fact that I can’t really use the space in his closet. If I could keep him out of the closet, that would be nice. I’m thinking that’s not likely though, so I should probably just go with the flow. He’ll grow out of it eventually, right?

I love these closet pics! I have been purging my closet over the past few months in stages, now it is time to really organize what I have left in there!
One habit I have gotten good at is purging items to get rid of on the go. I don’t necesarily wait for specific cleanup times, I am always on the lookout for items we are not using or no longer need. I keep a box for putting them in to take to goodwill. This purging makes it easier to do the real organization and cleanup.
Thanks, and have a great weekend!

Does having less stuff make life easier?
Heather says
This post is just what I need!! I could not be less organized, and I know I will feel better when I get it together! The pics of the closets are amazing!!!

I wish I was organized enough to tackle my closets, but I have a few other things that need to be done first…the closets on here today look awesome!

Thanks for spotlighting my closet! I worked so hard on it. =]

Hi, As a Home Stager, so much of your advice is spot on for helping to make a home look neater for those Open Houses as well.
I want to invited everyone over to my blog – A fundraiser event to help women get back into the working world and a Target card giveaway!

Just want to thank you for all the constant inspiration on keeping things together and tidy in my life! I gave you the Versatile Blog award over the Executive Mom!

Thanks Karen!

I have been using this as inspiration to get little bits of needed organizing done. Example: Reorganized, re-containered a cabinet that just wasn’t working. Both kids actually noticed and told me how great it was! I have our horrible shoe bench to conquer as well as the baskets on top of the fridge that just didn’t work out the way I wanted them to. Likely they would be more use somewhere else and I’ll solve the problem (again) of what to do with the stuff that gets stuck on top of the fridge whether or not I want it there! I love the photos–they are such an inspiration and help because I don’t visualize well.
Elisabeth says
Laura, I really like howy you organize your shoes at the bottom of your entry closet. Where did you find the organizers?
I have a wicker basket at our front door that holds shoes because usually my entry closet floor has a bag that’s headed for Goodwill in it.
Laura says
Hi Elisabeth, I found those organizers at Walmart, they are the BEST and so inexpensive as well. Even better is free…I’m giving away an awesome set of those organizers right here:

Hope that helps! 🙂

I just finished up the closet in my office this week! It was kind of like a warm-up to doing my master bedroom closet later this year. Much less stuff to handle, so I’ll enjoy looking through the links for inspiration on that project!
Linda Stoll says
Love those matching, labeled baskets running across the top shelf! And being up high, who’ll ever know if what’s inside is neatly folded or simply just easy to access?!
Jimmy says
Just stumbled upon this post and I would say that you inspired me to do my own decluttering project. I love how you pose pictures that help people realize that there is still a way to clear out some unnecessary stuff around the house.
I already did a little of this, but I still have to cover two cabinets and get rid of a huge pile of clothes. 🙂 I know I can do it, thanks for the inspiration!
