Menu Plan Monday ~ June 15th

greenmpm

Whew, the end of the school year is almost near for us.  June is killing me, between end of year activities and birthdays I’m definitely feeling the strain.  For someone who loves to organize as much as I do I’ve come to the realization that what I don’t enjoy is organizing events.  Nope, I’d much rather let someone else take the reins and just boss me around :)

Thank goodness in the mist of all this, I don’t have to worry about what I’m cooking each night.  It’s times like these I’m especially grateful for menu planning and how it alleviates a whole area of stress for me.  And even though my menu plan didn’t go according to plan once again last week, it all worked itself out in the end.  For instance, I moved the Crockpot Italian Meatballs to Tuesday night and was so surprised by the amount of sauce it made I was able to use it for a spaghetti dinner the following night.  Only one recipe didn’t get made but I’m just going to carried it forward to this week.   Doesn’t get much easier than that!

Okay rhubarb fans, I have an abundance (that might be the understatement of the year) in my house right now from the rhubarb fairies, otherwise known as the in-laws.  I’ve already made another Strawberry Rhubarb Pie (which was sooo yummy!) but I’m looking for some other ideas.  If you’ve got any recipes you’d like to share please please do so!!   Some of you asked last time what rhubarb is and while I don’t know how to explain it, this is what the edible stalks look like after they’ve been broken off from the big leafy plants they belong to.

So here’s what we’ll be eating this week.  How about you?

Monday: Cold Chicken Satay Noodles (recipe carried forward from last week)

Tuesday: Busy night ~ Bacon-Tomato Bagels Melts

Wednesday: Spinach and Mushroom Manicotti

Thursday: Sausage Pancakes

Friday: Leftover buffet

Saturday: Rotini with Shrimp

Simple Supper Sunday

Menu Plan Monday ~ June 8th

mpmpencil

Hello everyone!  Welcome to a new week :)

So I pretty much goofed on last week’s menu.  That will teach me for not consulting with the weather network before planning my menu won’t it.  It turned out to be a really hot week for us here which in all fairness rarely happens so I wasn’t expecting it.  Needless to say I didn’t really feel like turning my oven on at all so I had to play the menu shuffle game a little bit to re-adjust or adapt things for the stove top or grill.  It all worked out in the end though but you’ll notice this week that I’ve gotten much smarter and am including many lighter dishes that are quicker to make and don’t require me to heat up the house during our big heat wave…ha ha…it’s still probably considered cold to what many of you are experiencing :)

One of the meals I did still make was the Cheesy Chicken Vermicelli.  Super easy to whip together and my hubbie gave it a 9 out of 10 which is a pretty good rating coming from him.

Also my cookie of the week last week was courtesy of Toni (from her most excellent blog The Happy Housewife) and they were yummy yummy!  Check out her recipe for Chocolate Chip Whole Wheat Oatmeal Cookies!

Reminder:  The Kid Kaddy giveaway ends today!

So here’s what’s on our menu this week:

Monday: 5-Minute Southwest Layered Salad served with baguette (one of my favorite salad recipes!)

Tuesday: Cold Chicken Satay Noodles (I’ll cook a whole chicken in the slow cooker to use)

Wednesday: Crockpot Italian Meatballs for sub sandwiches

Thursday: Leftover buffet

Friday: Thai Pork with Savoy Cabbage

Saturday: Zesty Corn Quesadillas served with Mandarin Spinach Salad

Simple Supper Sunday (which is a really nice way of saying fend for yourself :) )

I always get a kick out of it when Menu Plan Monday falls on the first day of a new month.  Something so organized about that :)

I love finding new programs/software out there that might help make menu planning just a little bit easier for my readers.  Today I’m reviewing The Dinner Solution software over on my review site and as well I’m giving away a copy to one of you over there.  Be sure to check it out!

Last week I surprised myself by baking a pie from scratch.  If you are looking for a super easy and delicious dessert I highly recommend this recipe for Strawberry/Rhubarb Pie.  Yummy!!

The other recipe that was a hit last week was the Slow Cooker Teriyaki Ribs.  I’m not a huge fan of pork myself but my hubbie couldn’t stop raving about them.  I definitely appreciated how easy this recipe was to prepare though.

So here’s what we’ll be eating this week:

Monday: Fajitas

Tuesday: Cheesy Chicken Vermicelli (I’ll roast a whole chicken in the slow cooker during the day to use for this recipe)

Wednesday: Ranch Pork Chops served with perogies and corn on the cob

Thursday: Fuss Free Ravioli and Cheese Bake with added sausage and served with caesar salad

Friday: Leftover buffet

Saturday: Quick Homemade Pizza

Simple Supper Sunday

Hello lovely ladies (and any men that may be joining us!).  Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  I’m struggling with my mobility right now due to some old sciatica issues that are flaring up.  Sitting is the worst so this post is going to take me a long time to write as I will have to keep getting up to walk around.

Last week’s recipe highlight definitely goes to the Makeover Creamy Italian Sausage Pasta.  So delicious and definitely one that I’ll be adding to our Family Favorites Recipe Index!

Do you remember the Pork Chops Stuffed With Feta and Spinach recipe I was going to try last week?  So didn’t happen.  I couldn’t get past the first step of cutting a slit in the pork chop because apparently my pork chops were a little too thin.  Oh well, I slathered on some BBQ sauce and baked them in the oven instead :)

How many of you love to read food blogs?  I especially love looking at all the beautiful mouth watering food pictures.  If you were to recommend ONE food blog which one would it be?

menu

Monday: Black Bean Quesadillas served with spinach salad

Tuesday: Almond-Crusted Chicken served with perogies and broccoli

Thursday: Leftover buffet

Friday: Teriyaki Sirloin Steak (yay hubby is breaking out the grill!) served with baked potatoes and grilled veggies

Saturday: Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup

Using Delicious for organizing recipes ~ a tutorial

keriPlease welcome guest blogger, Keri from Bread of Angels to my blog today.  I was blog hopping the other day and saw a post that Keri had written about meal planning and she happened to mention that she used Delicious to organize her recipes online.

I’ve used Delicious a bit here and there but not enough to explain to anyone else how to do it.  Yet, since February is recipe month, I definitely thought it was something we should talk about.  So I twittered Keri and begged asked her if she would please write a tutorial explaining how it all works.  She was so kind to do this and she even used screen shots, how cool is that!  Thank you so much Keri!

Anyone have a messy mountain of recipes ripped out of magazines or printed off websites? Can you find the exact recipe you’re looking for in that pile, or quickly skim through all your soup or chicken recipes?

Here’s a handy way to make your personal cookbook paperless. I used delicious to create a customized, searchable online cookbook and eliminate that pile of paper. Delicious is a social bookmarking tool that stores your favorite sites online. You can see my online cookbook, and I’m going to show you how to set one up for yourself.

If you don’t already have a delicious account, you’ll need to register for one first. It’s also very helpful to have a delicious bookmark tool installed in your browser. Once that’s done, follow these steps to get started on a paperless cookbook.

Creating Your Delicious Cookbook

  1. Log into your delicious account. Click on the gray Bookmarks square at the top of the page. Look in the upper right corner and find the blue shaded box under the search bar. Click on the link that says ‘Tag Options’ and then click on the link that says ‘Manage tag bundles’.
  2. delicious-step2

  3. Click the green ‘Create’ button.
  4. delicious-step3

  5. Name your cookbook whatever you want in box number one, then type as many recipe keywords as you can think of in box number two.
    • Enter anything you would want to search by, including ingredients (chocolate, fish), cuisines (Mexican, Asian), meals (dinner, breakfast), or other possibilities you use (meatless, slowcooker).
    • Do not use commas; separate each keyword with a space only.
    • If you have keywords you want to use that are more than one word, just smoosh the words together (teaparty).
    • Once you have entered all the tags you can think of, click the green ‘Save’ button.
  6. delicious-step4

Adding Recipes to Your Cookbook

  1. Now that you have a system set up to organize your recipe bookmarks, let’s start adding recipes to your cookbook. Go to an online recipe you want to add to your online cookbook. Click your ‘bookmark on delicious’ button. (This will vary by the browser you are using, but should have been explained when you installed the browser tools in the first step.)
  2. The title of the webpage will be included (you can change this if you want to remember it by something else) and there is a line for tags. Enter as many of your tags as you think you might want to search for this recipe by. As you do this more often, your tags will appear below the ‘Tags’ line under ‘Recommended Tags’ and all you have to do is click on the ones you want to add. Click ‘Save’ when you are done.
  3. delicious-step5

  4. If you go to your delicious page, your new recipe bookmark will appear under your cookbook heading. Clicking on any of your tags will show you all the recipes you have added under that tag, making it easy to look up soup or cookie recipes.

delicious-step6

Adding New Keywords to Your Cookbook

There is one other thing you need to know. Eventually you will tag a recipe with a keyword that’s not included in your tag bundle because you didn’t think of it when you first set this up. If this happens you’ll see those tags listed at the bottom under ‘Unbundled Tags’. To make sure any recipes you tag with the new keyword are included in your cookbook, you need to go back and add them to the tag bundle.

delicious-step8

When this happens, all you have to do is go back to step one, but rather than creating a new bundle, click ‘Edit’ next to your cookbook. Add the unbundled tags that you want in your cookbook group and the recipes will automatically be moved into your online cookbook folders.

One More Thing

You can add other delicious users to your network so they can see your bookmarks and see the great recipes you’ve discovered as well. To do this, click on the gray People square at the top of the page and then look for the blue shaded box in the upper right.

delicious-step9

Click on ‘Add a user to Network’. Enter the delicious username you want to add and then click ‘Add’. They will then appear under your Network and by clicking on their username you can see all of their bookmarks.

Leave a comment and let us know your delicious username so we can can add you to our networks and see your new cookbooks.
