Hi Org Junkie blog readers! I’m Aby from Simplify 101 and I’m so excited to be guest blogging today! I’m happy to share with you a little taste of simplify 101 and the idea of creative organizing-something I hold near and dear to my heart.
We all know how great an organized space can feel, right? But with a small dose of creativity you can take an organized space from functional to fabulous! Infusing your organizing projects with creativity ensures you’ll love the results even more, which means you’re much more likely to keep your organized space organized. And best of all-adding creativity to your projects is super simple to do and lots of fun, too!
Speaking of fun, that’s something else we believe in at simplify 101. Getting organized is fun in and of itself, but it’s even more fun to get organized in the company of friends. I’ve created a series of online workshops with these ideas in mind…creative organizing solutions, having fun, getting things done, all while sharing the journey with a supportive and inspiring community. Sound fun to you, too? You can learn more about my workshops here.
Today I’m going to share a simple project that will help you organize some paper clutter using a few basic craft supplies. Organizing paper clutter happens to be the topic of my upcoming online workshop, by the way, and in each workshop I share ideas for organizing your space so it is functional and works well for you, but also so you love how it looks. This decoupage technique is one I’ve used to add a splash of creativity to all sorts of organizing projects in my home-from clipboards to drawers to the magnets I’m sharing today. So once you master the technique, you can add a creative touch to all sorts of organizing projects around your home.
Here’s the project:
The initial magnets on these chalk boards started out as plain wooden letters from Michael’s. Using a few basic craft supplies, I’ve dressed them up and turned them into a functional message board for my family. Each family member has their own magnet board, denoted by their initial. This new addition to our family command center is designed to make it easier (and more fun!) to keep track of household chores and to-dos.
Here’s how to make your own…
1. Collect your supplies. For this project you need a magnetic chalk board, wooden letters, craft glue stick, patterned scrapbook paper, a craft knife and cutting mat, a foam sanding block or an Emory board, magnets, a strong adhesive, a clamp, decoupage and a foam brush.
2. Glue patterned paper to wooden letters. Using the craft glue stick, adhere your patterned scrapbook paper to your wooden letters. Make sure to completely cover the tops of the wooden letters, and then, rub firmly with your hands to ensure adequate adhesion.
3. Cut letters out using craft knife. Turn the letters face down onto your cutting mat, and trim the excess patterned paper away the edges of your wooden letters.
4. Sand edges for a worn look. Using your sanding block and / or Emory board, sand the edges of the patterned paper on your letters. This will give the edges of your letters a weathered look, and will also help smooth out any rough edges caused while cutting with your craft knife. (If you have some tight spots in your letters, such as the center, cut your Emory board into skinnier sections using scissors.)
5. Glue magnets to your letters. Next, glue a magnet (or two) to the back of your wooden letters using your strong adhesive. I used some super-strong magnets, which require super-strong glue (so the magnet doesn’t fall off the letter when you remove it from the magnet board.) Follow your glue manufacturer’s instructions, and once your glue is dry move onto step 6.
6. Apply decoupage to the top of your patterned paper. I like the matte finish decoupage-it protects the surface of your paper and gives it a nice but not too glossy finish. Now, the trick with decoupage is to use super thin coats. If you use too much decoupage your paper can get too wet and may wrinkle or bubble-up. Trust me this isn’t the look you’re going for. ;) So go really, really thin with the decoupage, like such a thin coat you can barely see it. Then, let the decoupage dry for 15 to 20 minutes and then add a second coat.
7. Set up and use your magnet board. All that’s left to do now is hang up your magnet board and start using your family message center!
I hope you enjoyed this creative organizing project!

And the winner is….
Oh my word there are some serious lovers of the organizational tools out there!! I am completely overwhelmed by your response to my giveaway. Over 1100 of you left comments and might I just say I was amused by the tiny bit of competition I saw going on over who was the most disorganized and therefore most deserving of the prizes LOL. The comments were so entertaining and touching for me and I really did enjoy reading every single last one of them. The truth of the matter is you all deserve to win but alas there can be only one winner. That lucky person, chosen by random generator is the owner of this funny comment:
Does it make you giggle or blush when you realize you have more than ONE THOUSAND comments on this giveaway? I am floored. I would love to win this as I need major help with organization. But, I am thinking my chances are slim! LOL
Love it! {giggle} That person is Tracey D of The Faerie Castle. Congratulations Tracey!
And if you aren’t Tracey, no worries I’ve got a lot more giveaways up my sleeve!
Thanks again to Melanie for all her hard work organizing and running this carnival. It was great fun!

Giveaway ~ The Couponizer AND the Week over Week Calendar!
This giveaway is now closed.
I’m so so excited about this giveaway today! Today I’m giving away THREE prizes to ONE lucky winner. The first prize is one of my favorite menu planning tools. This product is the Magnetic Week over Week Dry-Erase Calendar and I absolutely adore it! I’ve been using it to plan my menus for a little over a year now.
The four weekly strips can be rotated so the most current week is on top. I use it a little differently though. I use the first week for planning my menus, the second week for tracking my weekly cleaning schedule, the third week for tracking my exercise and the fourth week my devotions. I keep it on my fridge front and center so I’m constantly reminded of what I need to do when. It is just awesome!
The second prize is another great tool related to menu planning and saving money. It’s called The Couponizer and it’s a fantastic system that comes complete with everything you need to get your coupons organized today in order to start saving money immediately. I’m also including a book telling you everything you need to know about couponing to get you started. A book by well-known author and television personality, Stephanie Nelson, otherwise known as the Coupon Mom (you may have seen her on Oprah recently). This 154 page book is called The Greatest Secrets of the Coupon Mom and believe me when I say this book is detailed. I hope you like it.
For more information on The Couponizer I’ve written a complete review of it over on my product review site.
To enter for your chance to win all THREE prizes all you have to do is leave a comment on this post. I’ll close the giveaway on Friday, October 31st at noon PST and the winner will be chosen at random.
Good luck!
Don’t forget to head on over to the Bloggy Giveaways Carnival for your chance to win MANY more wonderful giveaways.

Product Highlight ~ The Corky Wall Organizer + giveaway
A month ago I was flipping through my issue of Real Simple magazine, The Family Issue, and came across a great picture of a beautifully organized closet. It was so lovely and colorful. Check it out, although the colors aren’t quite as vibrant here, sorry:
Anyway what really stood out to me though was the two organizers hanging on the closet door. I’d never seen those before and I was intrigued. I immediately looked up where to find them, got on the internet and tracked them down. They are from a Company called KangaRoom Storage and the organizers are called Corky Wall Organizers. Don’t they look fun! I love finding new organizing sites, it makes me all tingly inside.
They retail for $29.99 and come in three different colors. They also have one that is even bigger than this one. I know for a fact that my daughter would love one of these to hold all her odds and sodds. So many uses!
Also, with it being craft/sewing room month here on the blog I thought this other product I came across might appeal to all you knitters out there. I thought it looked very fancy dancy and would make all your knitting dreams come true :) It’s called the Knitter’s Notebook and it holds all different sized needles, including the impossible round ones! (listen I don’t really know a round needle from a square one, that’s just what the website told me okay) It also has room for your scissors and a zippered pouch for other small trinkets. The 3-ring binder system lets you hole punch your patterns and keep them neatly in the binding system.
I can’t figure it out but all of a sudden I have a terrible urge to take up knitting….hmmm.
So my friends I have spoken with the really nice powers that be over at KangaRoom Storage and they have offered to giveaway one of their Corky Wall Organizers to one lucky commenter. So please leave a comment below before next Tuesday, Oct 21st at 12:00 pm PST.
Don’t forget to check out their site to see all their other wonderful organizing products. You won’t be sorry you did!

I call these product highlights and not reviews because I haven’t actually tried these products out, they are just things that make me say “well now that’s a great idea!”.
