This giveaway is now closed. The winner is #35 Heather!

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this time of year and all the attention that organization gets. Everywhere you look people are talking about it, blogs are fired up about it, stores are featuring bins and baskets galore and of course every magazine has something about organizing on it’s cover.

I live in a pretty small town in Alberta, Canada that has a population of about 9000 people. The closest we have to a store carrying organizing supplies is Wal-mart but after seeing Jen’s post yesterday, Wal-mart doesn’t even come close to the organizing bliss that Target carries, wah. Although I guess that may be a blessing for my bank account because I could be in trouble otherwise! Jen showed much more restraint than I ever could I’ll tell you that much.

Hello, my name is Laura and I’m addicted to organizing.

So how do I get my must have organizing fix you ask? Magazines! Magazines with oodles of pictures for me to drool over. I’ve got my hands on three right now that are just scrumptious (not in an eating way though, I don’t eat my magazines, that would be weird but I do drool all over them just like I would if I really were eating something scrumptious).

This first one came in the mail. Remember a little while ago I told you about a brand new organizing magazine on the market called Getting Organized Magazine? Well my first issue finally arrived just yesterday, whoot! It’s only 38 pages long but I’m sure it will grow as they get going. Love their tag line: treat yourself to some sanity. Why thank you, don’t mind if I do :)

You can find out more about this magazine by clicking the button below and when you subscribe you get a FREE ebook as well!

Then while at the drug store the newest edition of Storage (Spring 2012) hit the racks so of course it found it’s way into my basket.

Then while there my eye caught the word organize again, this time on another magazine. I had to take it home, I can’t help myself!

This particular picture inside caught my eye because of the happy face mugs in the top corner. Ahhhh

I got all excited about it because guess who got a happy face mug for Christmas? Me! My daughter knows that next to organizing I am crazy about happy faces so she bought it for me. What does that have to do with organizing? Not much, I’m just a strange cat and the littlest things amuse me :)

Giveaway Time:

So I didn’t forget about you my lovely readers. You know I always pick up an extra Storage magazine when I see it to giveaway. And in honor of January and the organizing bliss all around I thought I’d throw in a copy of my book, Clutter Rehab, too. So one person will win both. <del>To enter just leave a comment on this post telling me what your #1 spot to organize this month in your home is.</del> Just a reminder though that if you’ve got a room that needs a whole lot of TLC don’t forget to take before pictures before you get started. You’ll be able to use it for my 29 Day Organizational Challenge coming in February. Yay!

Comments must be left by Saturday, January 14th at 2:00 pm PST to be eligible. Winner chosen at random.

See ya!

As I mentioned yesterday when I told you about the 5 Simple Ways free ebook, I’m once again joining in on the “5 Simple Ways” series for 2012. A number of bloggers (see below), myself included, are each writing a post about 5 Simple Ways to do something in our respective niches.

Last year I wrote about 5 simple ways to organize your home and this year I’m sharing 5 simple ways to organize your home without spending the big bucks. This topic is near and dear to my heart because nothing frustrates me more than when I hear others say they are putting off an organizing project until they can afford to get organized. Trust me when I say, it does not have to cost a lot of money to get organized. It certainly can, one visit to the Container Store will confirm that. When I visited the store this past October in NYC I nearly fell over backwards when I saw this plastic drawer unit for $109 buck-a-roos.

Granted they had a pretty poppy motif but really $109.00??? For plastic? Yikes!

1. Follow the PROCESS

I just wrote about my PROCESS acronym the other day and by following these steps you will find you will save yourself so much money. How? Because the containerizing step is actually the fourth step of the PROCESS not the first. Before rushing out to buy baskets and bins (trust me I know it’s hard to resist, especially at this time of the year!) do your sort and purge first. That way you’ll ensure you’re not just trying to organize clutter which is a big no-no! Throwing clutter (things you don’t use regularly and/or love) into bins and baskets is still clutter no matter how organized it is. Plus the best part is purging is FREE!

2. Shop the dollar store

Oh my how I love the dollar store for organizing bins. It might take awhile to find a dollar store that stocks up on these types of products but when you do find one that looks like this it’s bliss baby, pure bliss!

I use these everywhere in my home. Granted they aren’t the prettiest of organizing tools but you know what, if it’s what you can afford, it’s what you can afford. For functionality they do the job, they establish limits and boundaries which is ultimately more important (in my book) than just looking pretty.

3. Shop thrift stores and garage sales

Both of these stops are great resources for finding inexpensive organizing tools. I’ve found some very sweet deals at both. The trick to this though is knowing what you need (see the first step of the PROCESS) and keeping your list and measurements with you at all times. With thrift stores it helps if you can pop in regularly as inventory is constantly changing. Makes friends with the owners and they’ll often tell you when they put out new stock and might even hold something for you if they know what you are looking for.

4. Think creatively

While at these garage sales and thrift stores, be open to using items in new ways to organize spaces around your home. I love coming up with different ways to use a product other than what it was originally intended for. I really get quite the high from it! For instance, microwave stands are a fantastic organizing tool as are plate racks. Who knew? It really opens up your possibilities for organizing solutions.

Here my daughter uses a skirt hanger to keep her bags off the floor:

5. Recycle

One of the most inexpensive ways to organize is to simply use what you have around the house. Tissue and tea boxes are fabulous for junk drawers for creating those ever important limits and boundaries we talked about early. All it takes is some scissors to cut the tops off and you are in business! Hairspray cups are the perfect size for holding push pins and paper clips. Empty wipes containers, old diaper boxes and pre-divided liquor store boxes make excellent storage containers. Also cut down cereal boxes work awesome as magazine holders. The possibilities are endless really!

Have you’ve gotten creative with inexpensive storage solutions?

Last Friday I ran a giveaway for two storage magazines (giveaway ends today at 2:00 pm PST if you haven’t entered yet) and I got many questions about where to find these magazines.

The first one (the one on the left) is called Storage and is a Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest magazine. This one is the Fall/Winter 2011 issue. I believe it is put it out quarterly and as far as I know you can’t get a subscription to it. I bought mine at Wal-mart but I’ve also seen it at my local grocery stores. If you want though you can purchase it online, along with other BH&G special publications and back issues, here.

The next magazine (the one on the right), Storage Solutions, was harder to track down. Again I purchased mine at Wal-mart but I looked for it online and couldn’t find it anywhere. Some information that might help you is that at the top of the magazine it says Country Collectibles #64 – 2011 and it is published annually by Harris Publications, Inc.

Now for some good news though (I announced it on Facebook earlier this week but I know not everyone follows me there). There is a brand new organizing magazine coming out soon! So doing the happy dance right now. I was so sad three years ago when my beloved Organize magazine stopping being published. Oh how I enjoyed it so. Now though I rejoice that a new magazine all about organizing will enter the marketplace.

It’s called Getting Organized Magazine and it looks like it’s going to be fantastic. Printed versions don’t launch until January 2012 but you can get a sneak peek on their website. Also if you subscribe now you’ll get a free organizing ebook to tide you over in the meantime. I’ve already ordered mine and have started the countdown until it arrives. Woohoo!!!

Anyone else get as excited about these kinds of things as I do? Anyone? Anyone?

I’ve asked my friend, Professional Organizer Aby Garvey, to visit us today with a post that addresses another question I get frequently asked: how do I get other members of my family on board the organizing train? Aby offers some very good points on how to make this happen. If you are interested in more in-depth personal organizing assistance, Aby offers online organizing workshops at affordable prices (especially if you compare it to the price of actually hiring a Professional Organizer to come into your home!). You’ll also find a discount code at the end of this post. Welcome Aby!

In nearly every session of my online workshops, Organizing 101: Learn How to Get Organized and Quick + Simple Clutter Control, someone asks: What can I do about so-and-so’s clutter? While “so-and-so” changes from workshop to workshop—sometimes it’s a husband, other times it’s a roommate, and often so-and-so is a son or a daughter—the essence of the question is always the same: If I’m going to put in the time and effort to get organized and declutter my home, how can I make sure my efforts aren’t undermined by the clutter bug(s) that live with me?

My answer may surprise you. What I always suggest is that at the onset, instead of worrying about the other clutter-bugs in your home, focus solely on you and your clutter. Now if other people in your home are contributing to the clutter situation, it’s very likely that their clutter is far more noticeable and annoying to you than your own clutter. This is why your instinct is to worry about them. But, here’s the thing: If there’s any clutter in your home with your name on it, if your so-and-so isn’t noticing it now, he most definitely will when you ask him to do something about his clutter.

When you start with yourself, you will be standing on solid ground when you ask other people to jump on the clutter-busting bandwagon later on. Furthermore, you start the process of showing your family what is now expected in your home. Begin by focusing on spaces that are yours and yours alone—such as your side of the bedroom or your craft space or your drawer in the bathroom or the laundry room, if that is your domain. This will help remove the fear that someone else will mess up your hard work—since they don’t use this space anyway — and it also shows that you’re creating these changes for you, which sends a very powerful message as well.

Share your journey. As you start with your own pockets of clutter, share your decluttering journey with your family. Explain why you’re putting in the time and effort to declutter your spaces and get organized. Tell your family members the benefits you intend to create. Then, as you make progress on your projects, share your successes and even your roadblocks with them. Share how good it feels to clear clutter and take steps forward on an important goal. Show your family members your organized spaces so they can see how great your spaces look. In short, share your enthusiasm…because enthusiasm is contagious.

Lead by example. When you declutter a room, the energy in that room shifts…and others will feel it, too, even if they weren’t involved in the decluttering process. As you continue on your personal organizing journey, you may begin to see, as many past participants of my online workshops have found, that others will naturally jump on the organizing bandwagon! As they hear about and see and feel the benefits you’re creating, they just may want some of that for themselves. But if not, don’t get discouraged. Simply continue on with your journey, tackling your organizing projects and creating new organized habits.

Getting your clutter-bugs on board. Once you’re in control of your own clutter, then you’ll be sending a consistent message about the new rules of engagement in your home. If the clutter-bug(s) haven’t jumped on board on their own, this is the time to sit down and have a conversation with him, her or them. Share what you want and review the benefits you’ve experienced as a result of your organizing journey. Tell them how much more energized, yet calm and peaceful, you feel now. Share with them how confident you feel when someone goes into one of your organized areas, and tell them how much more time you have now because you no longer search through stacks and piles for your things. In short, explain how worthwhile your decluttering efforts have been for you.

Ask and listen. Next, ask, and really listen to, what your family members want. Perhaps the people you share your home with have a different clutter comfort zone than you. It’s possible that your clutter-bugs don’t notice when their own things are out and cluttering up your space. If leaving things out is an automatic habit, then they may not even see it. Because of this, during your conversation make it your goal to reach an agreement that is a better place for both of you—one that gets you closer to your comfort zone, while recognizing and respecting that the people you share your home with may have a different perspective. You may find that your family’s comfort zone changes over time as they begin taking action on their own clutter.

Offer support. Once you and your so-and-sos are on the same page in terms of the goal you’re both after, then ask how you can support him, her or them in achieving the new goal. It’s possible your clutter-bugs may need help setting up new systems, as well creating new habits. In other words, after you talk about how you want things to be, it will still take time for those new habits to cement. If you know that up front and act as a support system, it will help all of you.

Take it one step at a time. When you’re at this point in the process, you’ll know that organizing is a combination of projects and habits. Just as you embarked on your organizing journey one step at time, give your family members permission to do the same. Notice their progress, and say thank you when you see them taking steps in the direction of your clutter comfort zone. As a past workshop participant said: “’Thanks’ makes a huge difference. It makes for a positive, cooperative atmosphere in our home, which is the ultimate goal.” I couldn’t agree more.

Whether your home needs a complete organizational overhaul, or you have just a room or two that is outside of your clutter comfort zone, the six-lesson/seven-week workshop Organizing 101 shows you how to create an organized space you’ll love. Did you know containerizing really is a word? I promise I didn’t just make it up. I double checked the dictionary just to be sure. In fact, it’s one of my favorite words ever because the action of containerizing is such a passion of mine. I’m so addicted to the high of it.

There is just something so rewarding about making more fit into a space by using a few carefully selected containers. I could do it for hours.

Okay, I have done it for hours, and it never gets old to me.

There are just so many possibilities and configurations and the best part is no one way is right or wrong. If you are able to find what you need right when you need it, if you’re able to maximize the space available to you, if everything has a home and you stick to what you can afford then you are on the right track. Read the rest of the article here.

I’m joining in today on the 5 Simple Ways project spearheaded by Toni of The Happy Housewife. A number of bloggers, myself included, are each writing a post about 5 Simple Ways to do something in our respective niches. My post today of course is all about organizing!

I’ve had a heck of time trying to narrow down my list to just 5 simple ways though because there are just so many ways! I decided to focus on some basics for this one since we are at the start of a brand new year. These steps once implemented will provide a solid organizing foundation for an organized and efficient home. They have each been adapted from the tips included in my new book, Clutter Rehab: 101 Organizing Tips to Become an Organization Junkie and Love It! At the end of my post you’ll find the links to all the other participating bloggers and their topics. Enjoy!

5 Simple Ways to Organize Your Home

1. Don’t discount what can be done in 5 minutes

So often we get stuck on the huge mountain of stuff that needs to be tackled that we tend to put off dealing with it until it can be dealt with all at once. The problem here, especially for busy families, is that a huge chunk of time almost never shows up. Thankfully many organizing tasks can be completed in short bursts of attention. For instance, in 5 minutes you can gather 5 things for your donation station, in 5 minutes you can check for expired products in your fridge, in 5 minutes you can organize your daughter’s hair barrettes, update your calendar, etc. Over time those few minutes and tasks will add up!

2. Never leave a room or floor empty handed

I’ve written about this one before and it is by far the one thing that helps me stay on top of clutter and reign in the chaos that is “stuff” out of its home. I never go from one floor to the next or one room to the next empty handed. That’s it. I go into more detail about this on this post here.

3. Do a 10 minute tidy each night before bed

Each night before bed take a few minutes to walk around and organize yourself for the next day. This involves just taking 10 minutes to ensure items for school are ready in your child’s backpack, items to be mailed are ready to go by the door, a list of errands to be done is created along with calls that need to be made, you’ve got an idea what you’ll make for dinner, etc. It’s all about giving yourself the next day advantage. You may think you’ll have time to do all those things in the morning but without fail something comes up to sabotage your good intentions and you spend the rest of the day scrambling and out of sorts.

4. Use visual cues to eliminate clutter

Sometimes with everything else going on, we can’t remember what we’ve used and what we haven’t. Of course we want to believe we have used something and even try to convince ourselves we have. Take any guesswork out of the equation by using some simple visual cues to remind you. For instance, place colored sticker dots on items of clothing or other miscellaneous items around your home. Mark the date on the calendar. When you use the item, remove the dot. At the end of the year you’ll know exactly what you’ve used and haven’t used. If it hasn’t been used you know it’s time for it to go!

5. Create “stations” in your home

I’m a huge fan of stations. Others might refer to them as zones. Whichever term you use, clustering activities in one place works! Rather than walk all around your kitchen gathering supplies to make coffee and tea, keep everything located together in one cupboard. This tip can apply to so many other areas of your home as well….games, craft supplies, snacks, you name it! It saves considerable time when trying to find what you need.

Happy organizing my friends! If you are looking for some inspiration and motivation be sure to check out my 52 Weeks of Organizing series.

I am a Professional Organizer from the San Francisco Bay Area and I am so excited to guest post today!

The beginning of each New Year is the time of year most of us focus on starting over and establishing new habits. We often tell ourselves, “This year I’m going to get organized,” or “I’m going to stay on top of everything this year.” The problem is most of these resolutions are too broad and don’t provide guidelines for how to achieve these goals. Fortunately, there are ways to become and stay organized this year and today I want to share a few of my favorite tips and tricks with you.

The hardest part about getting organized for most of my clients at Kuzak’s Closet is deciding where to start. My recommendation: Start in the room that needs the least amount of work. This will allow you to use this room as a staging area for your donation pile, your trash pile and the “things to keep” pile. From there, move clockwise throughout your house to keep everything simple, and to keep you from bouncing from room to room.

Once you decide where to start, here are some of my favorite tips and tricks for getting organized in 2011 and staying organized for years to come!

Set an appointment on your calendar to devote to organizing specific areas in your home and stick to it. Whether it is once or three times per week this will help get you into a routine.

Don’t skip areas in a room, empty out every drawer and cabinet so you can feel thoroughly organized when you are finished.

After you complete a room or closet reward yourself with something you enjoy like a pedicure, a glass of wine, or a new sweater. This will motivate you to keep going.

If paperwork is your problem change your settings for your bills and financial documents to be delivered to you electronically, this will help cut down on the amount of mail that you receive and need to file each week.

Chances are you don’t miss any of the items you have in your storage spaces, “out of sight out of mind.” Purge the items that are in storage that you no longer want or need and either bring what you want home or downsize your storage unit to save money.

Don’t panic, if you are feeling overwhelmed don’t start shoving items in drawers and closets. Maybe you need to take a break or a day off so you can refocus.

Once you are happy with your accomplishments and feel organized set a schedule to keep it up.

Here are some suggestions:

Monthly: Refrigerator, Paper Files, Pantry, Vehicle

Quarterly: Linen Closets, Clothing Closets, Bedrooms, Kitchens, Makeup, Cleaning Supplies

Bi-Annually: Garages, Basements, and Storage Spaces

If there is a specific area you struggle with, try to devote 15-20 minutes weekly to avoid having it become unorganized.

I wanted to share before and after photos with you to help illustrate that using getting organized is a reachable goal for everyone this new year. A client of mine contacted me in a slight panic after she got a call from a friend who was coming into town for a visit. Her living room had become a dumping ground for everything in the house, it wasn’t a relaxing place to hang out and not ready for entertaining.

We started on the left side of the room and moved clockwise moving unwanted furniture out to the garage so it could be sold online, junk to the garbage, and finding a home for everything else.

I’ve got some awesome ebooks to tell you about that I’ve recently had the pleasure of reading. They are all beautifully written with positive encouraging messages about time management, simplifying and organizing with regards to your home, your life and your blogging. I don’t often recommend ebooks but these four really impressed me. Let me tell you about them.

1. Tell Your Time ~ how to manage your schedule so you can live fulfilled by Amy Lynn Andrews – $12.00

Amy discusses the pitfalls and principles of time management which are spot on. Learn and adapt the two principles listed and it will change your life, seriously. She then walks you through the steps required to create envelopes of time according to your determined purpose and priorities. She also includes the necessary printables to help you incorporate your life goals into your daily schedule. Awesome! Learn more

2. Organizing Life as MOM ~ inspiration and planning pages to help you get your act together by Jessica Getskow Fisher – $9.00

This 125 page ebook includes all the planning pages you need, including calendars and checklists, to create a household notebook to help you stay on top of things as a busy mom. A mom of six herself, Jessica really wants to help you succeed and shares the tips and tools you need to make it happen. I love that the forms included are customizable so you can tweak them to work perfectly for your life. Thanks Jessica! Learn more

3. Simple Blogging ~ less computer time better blogging by Rachel Meeks – $8.00

Amazing! I devoured this ebook in the airport when I was traveling a couple of weeks ago. It is so well written and thoughtful with regards to the topic of growing a successful blog while keeping the other parts of life balanced. No easy task, that I know! Whether you are just starting out as a blogger or someone who has been at it for awhile, this ebook is for you. I was blown away by the depth of information in the pages of this book and highly recommend it. Rachel really challenged me in some of the areas I might be out of balance including dealing with email guilt. This one is a tough one for me but I am really encouraged by Rachel’s advice. Every blogger should read this book, you won’t be disappointed. Learn more

4. Simplify. ~ 7 guiding principles to help anyone declutter their home & life by Joshua Becker – $9.95

Joshua’s ebook has been out awhile but it’s one I refer back to over and over. Why? Because until I read Joshua’s book I didn’t define myself as a minimalist. I thought a minimalist was someone who owned less than 100 things and slept on the ground. That’s not me and it isn’t Joshua either and I love how he redefines this scary term and explains beautifully the benefits and principles for living what he terms “rational minimalism”. Joshua’s seven guiding principles will make you think differently about the stuff that controls your life and will challenge and motivate you to stop the chaos cycle brought on by consumerism and clutter. An excellent read. Learn more

I’ve been home for two days now and slowly getting myself organized. So much yet to do though especially with my book due to come out in a little over a month! It’s all going so fast and now the promotion begins. I’ll keep you posted with what’s to come! I’m hoping to do a blog tour and of course there will be book giveaways galore. I’m very proud of the final product and I think the way it is organized and the layout and pictures are perfectly arranged for easy reading in small amounts of time. I was very careful about that because I know that finding large chunks of reading time isn’t always possible. Since my book is written in tip format (everything you ever wanted to know about living an organized life!) and not in any particular order it takes the pressure off of having to read it like a novel. It’s currently available for pre-order on Amazon and on sale for a great price…only $8.73! You just can’t beat it!

Next I want to send a special thank you to everyone who purchased from my shop last month. I’m thrilled for all the winners who won some fabulous prizes. I’ve got two more winners to quickly announce before I forget.

The Original Stash Organizer winner is Katy!

The grand prize winner of the Foldtuk Roaster is Sandy!

Congratulations girls, you should have received an email from me by now.

Once again I’d like to say some big thanks to my fabulous blog sponsors from last month!

A couple of weeks ago I showed you my garage and the work I had ahead of me to get it organized. I wanted to be able to get my van in there to avoid having to scrape the windshield every morning. Looking at this picture below you can see I had my work cut out for me.

Unfortunately I’m sorry to say I still can’t park my van in the garage and we’ve already had our first snowfall of the year! Sheesh!

BUT I have made progress and that’s what I need to focus on. Not what I haven’t done but what I have done no matter the level of progress.

If you are discouraged and overwhelmed with the mountains of clutter in front of you, just start and see the positive in the progress.

Take the first step and then another and then another. Don’t beat yourself up over the amount of time it takes. It’s your time and only you know how much time you can devote to your project whether it’s five minutes a day or 5 hours.

To help you see your progress take pictures of your stages. Revel in the accomplishment of each step and continue to move forward.
