I did it, I did it and it was tough, tough, tough. I finally picked the winners of Org Junkie’s 29 Day Organizational Challenge! With previous challenges I’ve always had someone helping me with the winner selecting process but for whatever reason I decided to go it alone this time around. Let’s just say I’ve had better ideas and this was not one of them. Oh boy. A couple of weeks ago I actually got the list narrowed down to 13 and then I stared at them and stared at them, waiting to see what would happen. Nothing happened. My indecisiveness is ridiculous! I didn’t mean for you to have to wait this long but alas I have finally picked some winners. I think next time I will need to be more specific about pictures though because some pictures were either too small and/or not clearly described as to what was going on making it very difficult for me to get a clear picture of the space. Also if the before and after pictures were not matching shots it was really difficult for me to get the full effect in some cases.

I am so so happy I decided to ask the very last question to each of the participants. Your answers to the question “What is ONE piece of advice you’d give to someone else to encourage them on their organizational journey?” were awesome! I’m going to compile them all in a separate post because they are too great not to share. So much inspiration that is for sure!

So thank you to everyone that participated, your willingness to put it all out there to create change for yourself was also very motivating to many others. Win, win all around! Way to go!!

Without further ado, please let me announce the winners below:

The First Place winner is: #4 Sharon from Mom of 6!

Today is the day friends! I’m just so darn excited for you all, whoot! How great does it feel?

credit: shutterstock

Now if you weren’t able to complete your space in time, I don’t want you to beat yourself up. There will be none of that now you hear. And just think, reading some of the posts linked up today might be just the inspiration and motivation you need to continue on. Don’t give up!

Okay so let’s recap some of the rules just so were all on the same page.

Please include in your post the answers to the questions posted here.

If you have done multiple spaces (umm, wow!) then please prepare different posts for each and link up each individual post separately.

Your final post must contain BOTH your before and after pictures so I don’t have to jump back and forth between posts. Try to make it as easy as possible for me to see your organizing efforts and what you have accomplished.

Please note video isn’t preferred as it is much harder for me to compare before and afters.

Remember to link up to your specific blog post and not to the main page of your blog.

By entering your link, you are giving me permission to use snippets of your post including pictures in future spotlights on I’m an Organizing Junkie (proper credit and links will be given to you, of course!).

Your deadline for adding your entry will be March 1st at 3:00 pm PST.

If you see that your link was deleted, it was probably because one of the above rules weren’t followed.

For more detailed information, including the list of AMAZING prizes and sponsors, please visit the official 29 Day Organizing Challenge page.

So I’m not going to go crazy here and commit to when I’ll have the winners selected. It will all depend on how many link up. Don’t worry though I’ll keep you posted along the way :)

Congratulations everyone, you are all winners in my book!!

We are on the final push now! Can you believe it’s already the end of the month? Will you be ready? In preparation for the challenge end I need to pass along a few instructions that will hopefully make this final process as painless as possible. I don’t want it to be complicated so if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

Early Wednesday morning (Feb 29th) I will put up my final challenge post with a linky list attached to it. If you have done multiple spaces (umm, wow!) then please prepare different posts for each and link up each individual post separately. Your deadline for adding your entry will be March 1st at 3:00 pm PST.

Your final post must contain BOTH your before and after pictures so I don’t have to jump back and forth between posts. Try to make it as easy as possible for me to see your organizing efforts and what you have accomplished. For best results it’s always nice when the “before” shot matches the “after” shot in terms of area/room view and camera angle. Please note video isn’t preferred as it is much harder for me to compare before and afters.

Judging:

Overall Transformation – A well organized, uncluttered, clearly defined and efficient space that lends itself to easy maintenance.

Creative Use of Space – Using creative solutions to allow you to maximize your space and create zones in a new and manageable way.

Storage Solutions that Work – Using storage solutions that allow you to establish boundaries and limits and contain “like with like”.

Overall Personal Experience – The process that got you to the uncluttered space mentally and physically.

My philosophy on organizing is that it doesn’t need to cost big bucks to do it and so you’ll notice that $$ spent is not even a factor in the judging criteria. Many a creative storage solution can be found for next to nothing. I’m not necessarily going for designer spaces here, I’m more interested in the journey you took to get to the end result. I’m looking for evidence that shows me that not only did you clear the clutter from your space but that you are ready to take what you learned in the PROCESS to move on and tackle other cluttered spaces in your life. Now that to me is a success story!

Questions:

In order to ease the judging process even more and to help me narrow down the much deserving winners I ask that participants complete a challenge summary by answering the following seven questions:

1. What space did you decide to organize and why?

2. What steps did you take to ensure you completed the space within the 29 day timeline?

3. What was the hardest part of the challenge for you and how did you overcome it?

4. What did you do with the “stuff” you were able to purge out of your newly organized space?

5. Tell me one of your proudest moments during this challenge?

6. Explain any organizing “tools” you used to help you create additional space and to establish some limits and boundaries?

7. What is ONE piece of advice you’d give to someone else to encourage them on their organizational journey?

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to see your finished spaces and celebrate your achievement along with you.

Thank you again to all our participants and a BIG thank you to all our sponsors for their generous donations:

Hi everyone, I apologize for getting this up late. We were away yesterday in the city for the hockey game and drove home in treacherous winter driving conditions. It took us three hours and my nerves are shot. Rather than keep you waiting any longer though I’m going to go ahead and get this up even though I don’t have much of a post to go with it. Sorry about that.

I do quickly want to show off my most recent purge pile though. This is what left my house last week:

Mostly old coats and clothes from my closet.

As a recap, these are my other purge piles since the beginning of this year:

As you can see purging alone is an ongoing process. Unless you are living in a bubble you will have to stay on top of the clutter that creeps in. And it will. It’s inevitable. Set up a donation station and have it ready to go at all times. Makes life so much easier. And it certainly doesn’t have to be anything fancy.

So hopefully today I’ll see some of your purge piles going out the door. If I can do it, you can do it!

I’m so happy to see the progress you’ve each already made, so proud of you!

Hi friends, here we are at Friday again. That went quick didn’t it? :) So how are you making out with the challenge? Are you beginning to see the light? What has been the most eye opening for you thus far?

I received some questions on Facebook that I wanted to take a moment to answer here.

1. Quite a few of you have asked me about numbers. How much should you keep of this or that, what is the right number? I can’t answer that for you though. It’s so very personal and will differ for each person. There is no right and wrong here. You will need to figure this out for yourself because it all comes down to what you have the room to store and what’s a priority for you in that space. For instance if you have a love of scrapbooking and want to keep your supplies, you have to have the room to store them (and no piles on the floor don’t count!). If you don’t have the room to store them, then you purge until it fits. If you don’t want to purge them, then you have to be willing to sacrifice something else. For instance, perhaps you could pare down your pantry stock in order to make room for your scrapbooking supplies in there. Does that make sense?

Another trick that I love is limiting what you keep with the use of a “limiting” container. This is your visual to know when enough is enough. You decide the size of the container and limit supplies to what will fit inside. It will help you make future purchasing decisions too because you will know in order to buy something new you’ll have to get rid of something in the container to make room.

2. Rachel asked about the best way to organize scrapbook stickers, should they be put in one huge box/binder/system or should they be sorted them by event (eg, birthdays, christmas, baby). Again there is no right or wrong answer. What I say to this is store them by how you look for them. Pay attention next time you scrapbook to your habits and how you search for things. Store them to what makes sense for you and you will waste so much less time hunting for what you need. Do what works for the way you operate.

3. Mandi asked how to decide what art to keep from kids? What to keep & when to toss? Again a “limiting” container is my answer for this one and let your kid’s choose their favorites! I wrote about how I use memory binders and keepsake totes for my kid’s stuff and it really does put a limit on what can be kept. Another reader responded with a terrific idea. Scan the artwork and create photobooks with the pictures. Fantastic!

4. Cheryl asked for suggestions for shredding because she has a lot of paper to dispose of. I didn’t know this (I’m in Canada) but a reader told us that places like FedEx and OfficeMax have shredding services. Definitely might be something to look into and worth the cost especially if your piles are taking up valuable real estate!

5. Tammy had a question about clothes and what to do with them all especially all the ones she no longer fits into that she paid good money for. I wrote a post about this that might help –>Clothes Purging – How to Let Go.

6. Joan is wondering about how to get her motivation spark back? Joan perhaps you could ask a friend to help you. What you might need is a set of new eyes to give you a fresh perspective. Sometimes new ideas with regards to space planning and solutions are right there in front of us but we get so accustomed to our spaces we don’t even see them. That might be all it takes to light your organizing fires again :) Don’t give up!!

**************

Finally the last thing I wanted to tell you about is a great new site that helps you find different charity organizations to donate your stuff to. Check it out at The Stuff Shop. Very resourceful!

Please feel free to link up below any progress you’ve made during the challenge so far. Big or little it’s all good! Don’t forget to celebrate your accomplishments!!

First of all I’m so excited that so many of you decided to just go for it and show off your before pictures….over 100 of you in fact. That just blew me away!! So proud of all of you! Here’s a little video for you :)

If you have trouble viewing the video, you can find it here.

Today is all about linking up your 1st progress report. How are you making out with the challenge so far? Tell us how it’s going, are you further ahead or behind where you thought you’d be? Do you have a purge pile to show me? :)

A few of you mentioned on Facebook about feeling overwhelmed. My best piece of advice for this is don’t look up…break your project down into bit size tasks that keep you from viewing the entire space at one time and seeing all there is to do.

Also I really want to thank all the sponsors for providing so many awesome prizes for our challenge as well. I would love if we could show them some love by checking out each of their Facebook pages below.

It’s finally here! It’s time for Org Junkie’s 29 Day Organizational Challenge!! Our official challenge page can be found here where you’ll find all the specifics of the challenge.

Today is all about introducing yourself and letting us know which room you’ll be organizing this month. And for those that are bravest of all I’ve put up a linky below if you’d like to link up your “before” pictures however please know that this isn’t a requirement of the challenge (although you will have to show them at the end of the month). I want this to be a positive and productive experience for you, that’s what it’s all about. Leaving a comment is okay too :)

(you do need a blog for this challenge as you will be required at the end of the month to link up your post showing off your before and after pictures. Don’t have a blog? Consider starting one, it’s easy to do!)

Where to start?

Select one room in need of some clutter control and chaos taming this month. Then the first step of the PROCESS is to plan your space. You can find a list of questions to help you with that here. Like Peter Walsh always says, what is your vision for your space? This is important because you’ll need to remind yourself over and over again of this vision you want to achieve as you go through the tough de-clutter step.

Calendar:

Also don’t forget to print off the calendar to help you stay on track. Pencil in a rough guideline of how much time you can dedicate each day to the project.

Download calendar here

Sponsors:

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to tell you about the amazing sponsors that have come on board to provide our winners with such FANTASTIC prizes. Prizes are listed below for each of the three winners:

First place winner will receive 7 prizes
Second place winner will receive 4 prizes
Third place winner will receive 3 prizes
PLUS there is a bonus prize for a random winner

Are you ready for this?

Oh my goodness girlfriends, these past few days Tanna and I have been pouring over all the entries in the 28 Day Organizing Challenge. I have laughed and cried and rejoiced with each one of you as you shared your frustrations, trials and accomplishments. What an amazing job everyone has done! I’m so happy for each and everyone of you. It’s not easy to put yourself out there like that, exposing your spaces for what they were, but trust me when I say that by doing so you have inspired many others to organize their own spaces. And from what I have read, many of you are using the lessons learned during this PROCESS as motivation to tackle more areas in your home. Now that’s what I like to hear!!

Congratulations goes out to everyone for your determination, perseverance and the successful completion of your spaces. And even though time didn’t allow for Tanna and I to comment on each individual post as we would have liked, we took the time to read each and every entry and are honored that you opened up your homes to us. Here’s what Tanna had to say about the challenge:

“First I want to say thank you to Laura for letting me take this little journey with you all. It was tough to just pick three winners in each category because you all Rock! You are all winners in my book and you did a great job! I know it is hard to show off your clutter like that but I think we all learned a little bit from it. Each and every one of you were able to inspire someone else going through some of the same issues! Your transformations were amazing and you should all be giving yourselves a huge pat on the back! I am proud of you and keep up the good work!”

Okay so now the time we have been waiting for. Please take a moment to visit each of these ladies and congratulate them on a job well done.
