The following is a guest post with some quick tidying up tips from regular contributor, Yuni at Love Your Abode.
Hi friends! Hope you’re having a wonderful new year. I don’t know about you but once December ends and the new year rolls around, I go on a major decluttering mission. Along with decluttering, I do a major clean up of all the rooms once all of our guests have gone back home. Today, I’m sharing some of my super quick tidying up tips.
If you get overwhelmed thinking about cleaning up your home, I really encourage you to try out at least one of these tips. They have helped me stay on task and do it as efficiently as possible.
Tip 1: Keep your cleaning supplies corralled in one basket
When you go from room to room, all your supplies are in one place. This makes it super convenient since all you have to do is carry the basket from one room to the next. I like to keep gloves, duster, paper towels, spray cleaners, trash bags and a timer in the basket.
Tip 2: Use a timer
If you’re like me, you get easily distracted. I will literally go into a room to clean and get sidetracked after about 10 seconds. For instance, I will go into my bedroom to tidy up and then lose my focus because all of the sudden as I’m putting the laundry away, I decide I really need to reorganize my sock and underwear drawer. Or, I’ll start redecorating my dresser or looking through a magazine in the bathroom. Total fail! So, the timer tip is huge, people! I give myself 7 minutes to tidy up a room quickly. I stay focused and since I like games, it’s like I’m competing against the timer. This also works great with kids so I highly recommend it!
Tip 3: Keep a basket next to the stairs
Another tip I like to use is to keep a basket near my staircase. I place it on the other side of the stairs next to my office so that it’s not visible in the main kitchen and living area. This basket serves as a place to throw anything in there that doesn’t belong on the main level. Instead of going up and down the stairs a million times, I just carry the basket up every evening or whenever it gets full. It saves on time when you’re tidying up. You can even place a basket at the top of the stairs to serve the same purpose.
These are some of the simple tips I use to tidy up around my home in the quickest manner possible. When I’m doing a full deep cleaning, it takes more time but I still like to utilize these same tips so I can stay on task and do it efficiently. I hope my tips are helpful for you as you tidy up your own home.

The basket by the stairs is such a good idea! I lose count of the times I go up and down the stairs putting stuff away each day. Such a simple idea but one I’ll definitely be using 🙂
The ‘getting distracted’ is so a thing I do too! I’ll be tidying up then start reading the magazine or book I’m supposed to be tidying away! Total disaster!
Thanks for the tips! xxx

Hi Clare! I’m so glad I’m not the only one that gets terribly distracted. So glad you found the basket idea useful. It definitely is a time saver. Thanks for reading!!

I have always used a collapsible basket which stores flat when not in use. This can be slipped under a sideboard or stored flat against the stairs when not in use so doesn’t become part of the clutter I’m trying to get rid of.
Another tip : I have a ‘bin it Friday’ every month. I go through products in my store cupboard and flag up things like flour and spices that need to be eaten or they get binned the following month. This saves me time, money and space in my store cupboard and means I stop hoarding stuff unnecessarily. Hope this idea helps someone else.

But in 7 minutes, you only have time to tidy up right? I mean, you are not dusting every square inch of the room? My mom was an awesome lady she kept the home SOOOO clean, she would clean the mirrors every single day and dust every piece of furniture every week + 2 kids + full time job, I mean, who has the time to do that anymore?
