The following is a guest post from regular contributor, Yuni at Love Your Abode.
Upon entering through the garage door in our home, you will step foot into our kitchen. There’s a desk on the left and a well utilized makeshift mud area on the right. I blogged about our mud area on Orgjunkie last month and how this area is a total workhorse for our family.
Most days, this desk became a perpetual drop zone for everything. Can anyone else relate to this picture? There wasn’t a place to store our mail so it was just sitting up. Keys, loose change, and other miscellaneous items were placed in the white dish. The problem was that not everything had a proper home. The upper cabinets have stayed organized after creating a storage plan a while back but this desk area remained an eye sore.
The first thing I did was purchase an inexpensive large wooden box to hold our mail. I needed our mail to stay on the desk because I knew if I placed them in the drawers, they would be forgotten. You can find these at large retail stores and I purchased mine for less than $20. I liked this particular box because it allowed my husband and I to have our own slots. Now, there’s a place to store our mail and other necessary paperwork that needs attention. We go through them every few days to pay bills and file away the ones that need to be stored. The slot is also wide enough for my husband to drop his wallet and phone when he gets home.
The dish with the keys and other miscellaneous items drove me crazy. I nailed in two hooks on the narrow strip of wall between the door and desk and we just hang our keys there now. This small change has really made the biggest difference! No more looking for keys! They go right there every time we enter the house. Maybe one day, I’ll make it look a little more aesthetically pleasing but for now, it’s perfect.
This small caddy that I put on the refrigerator holds coupons, invites, and cds.
Everything else was put away in it’s intended home and there’s a clean desk again. Can I get an amen?
There are times when stuff still gets dropped in this area but I’m just really glad the mail, keys, coupons, and other paperwork are stored away nicely. I’m making it a habit to put things away where they belong.
Sometimes the smallest changes can really make the biggest difference! How do you organize this part of your home?

Great ideas! I like the keys on the wall and the tray over in the corner is pretty and useful.

Any suggestions when one spouse has too much “stuff” to fit at the command center? We’re talking about receipts, coins, lip balm, twist ties, crumpled notes, pill bottles, etc., that get dumped daily & not put away?
