The following is a guest post from regular contributor, Kristin at The Gold Project.
We all have them. Those areas in our homes that we forget exist, which means they are probably not organized. So, what made me think of these areas? Well, last week my daughter told me that her television remote had fallen between her bed and her wall and she couldn’t reach it. So, I get on my hands and knees and glance under there. It looked like the island of mismatched socks, forgotten paper, and there were a few dolls that should’ve been screaming for help.
This situation got me thinking about the mysterious areas in my home that I never tend to on a regular basis.
1. Under the Beds
Have you ever glanced under your beds? I know I thought mine were pretty well clean until I took a nice look. Under the bed in our master bedroom, we store some breakable framed photos that my husband does not want messed up, but that wasn’t the only thing living under there. We also had several mismatched socks, some bobby pins (guilty), random pieces of paper where my daughter had been coloring and it slipped through the cracks, and some writing utensils.
So, I had my kids help me get everything out from under there (since they are smaller than me). We threw trash away, put the socks in the dirty clothes hamper, and placed the writing utensils in the office.
2. Behind Doors
I am the person that keeps brooms and mops behind the door in my laundry room. There isn’t a system to it at all. They are just propped up against the corner of the room. It is one of those areas I am still tackling in my house because I haven’t found a perfect system yet.
Then, if I don’t pay attention, my daughter will hang all of her purses and jackets behind her main bedroom door on her door knob.
These are areas we do not see everyday, so we forget they are even a chaotic mess behind them. But, I have determined that they do need some TLC too.
3. Back of Cabinets
This is an area that may not appear to be unorganized, but could possibly be. Let’s take the drinkware cabinet, for instance. In my household, the cups and glasses that we never use continuously get pushed to the back of the cabinet. Therefore, we forget they are even part of our drinkware. We never use them, so we are never reaching towards the back of the cabinet to grab one.
So, from time-to-time, it is a good idea for us to take inventory of the back of our cabinets. We have to make sure we are still using those dishes and ask ourselves if we still want them. And, if we choose to keep them, make sure those dishes are organized too.
Another cabinet of concern would be my bathroom cabinet. A lot of beauty items that are not getting used can travel to the very back and I may never know it unless I check it out frequently.
4. Nooks & Crannies of Closets
The back of a closet can seem like a bottomless pit. In our household, my kids have closets that appear to be small when you open the door, but extend pretty deep on both sides. This can be a good and a bad thing. It is great because that means more room for storage. It is a bad thing because they seem to think the back corners can be used to cram miscellaneous things so mom doesn’t see them. In other words, I don’t want to put these things away, so I am just going to shove them where I hope mom doesn’t notice them.
So, every couple of months I have to get in their closets and reorganize them.
5. Behind Televisions
You might be thinking, “I do not keep anything behind my television.” And, you would be correct. I am talking about all those cords that go all over the place. I would love it if televisions could be wireless. And, maybe they already sell those. I might be a little behind. I just know that when I look behind my television in my living room, it looks like a jumbled mess. So, I need to take some time and wrap a trash bag tie or zip tie around the cords that go together, so it looks more organized.
They do sell fancy boxes and ties especially for these areas, but zip ties work just as good, in my opinion.
Can you think of other hidden areas in your home that need to be organized?
My name is Kristin and I am a middle school career education teacher by day and a mommy/wife/blogger by night. I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have two loving children. We recently made a life-changing move to Arkansas, so our new house is always under construction. I get excitement out of finding new creative, functional, and cute ways to organize things! I also enjoy writing and documenting life as it happens. So, I put these loves together and created The Gold Project. With the help of my husband, I am attempting to turn our house into a home. So, check out this special place of mine and take this journey with me!

Behind the towels in the linen closet. I have found many interesting things there such as extra shampoo.

Behind the television is a GREAT one. I never clean back there except for the once per year big clean and it is always so disgusting! Thank you for sharing.

My bedside stand area. It’s got a shelf below and it accumulates papers from church bulletins to class notes I’ve removed from my zip Bible case. My problem is I’ve been lazy lately. So I need to spend minutes cleaning up the mess.
