Summer is finally here and along with that comes summer clothes. My old method of organizing shorts in my closet was to stack them on a shelf. You know what a stack of anything does don’t you? It teeters and then falls. This means I have to waste time cleaning up a mess. I really hate wasting time. So certainly stacking my shorts wasn’t an ideal solution but I didn’t have any drawer space available. Since shorts are what I’m wearing most often these days though I needed to have them accessible to me without a lot of hassle of finding the pair I want. Why put up with a hassle if you don’t have to?
So last month one of my contributors, Kalyn, contributed a post here that really got me thinking. I love having contributors because they often share organizing ideas that I haven’t thought of yet. I just love the variety! Kalyn’s post on How to Organize Your T-Shirts was terrific and she showed how she folded her t-shirts to organize them in a drawer. I loved that you could see each shirt lined up in a row and could easily grab the one you wanted. If the shirts were stacked in the drawer you would have to dig through them to get what you were after. Here’s a picture of what her drawer looks like before and after.
When I saw that post, I thought to myself how cool would it be to have my shorts organized like this! I didn’t have a drawer to use but I did have a big basket (from Michaels during one of their 50% off baskets sales) that would work perfectly for this purpose. Take a look:
Ahhhhhhh!!!
As you can see they don’t have to filed inside the basket perfectly, you just have to be able to find what you need without an entire stack of shorts falling to the floor. And in case this seems like a lot of shorts to you, let me tell you why I have this many…..so I don’t have to do laundry as often of course. Ha! Thankfully I pick them up super cheap at our local thrift store. I do love me a great bargain as well 🙂
Sorry I didn’t take the picture of the basket in my actual closet but it’s so dark in there, the pictures weren’t very good. So there you have it, organizing shorts in a basket is super easy and uncomplicated.
Baskets really are the best!
Contain and conquer!
That’s going to be my new motto around here. Contain and conquer and life will be good.
The end 🙂

What a great idea Laura! I’ve been “filing” my kids clothes like that for about a year and I love it. Never thought of it for my shorts though. And that basket is perfect for it. It would take up much less space than the piles in my closet. Thanks for sharing your solution!

It makes me so happy, sometimes it just the little things that make the biggest impact 🙂

Yes! I reorganized my t-shirt drawer after reading Kayln’s post, too! Now I’m off to take the pile of shorts out of my closet and put them in a basket like that. Thanks!

So glad it will help you too!

I pile all of my workout shirts, pants etc.. on a shelf in my closet and as much as I try to stack and fold neatly it never ever stays that way and it never fails that I just can’t find that one shirt I need! I am going to try this with the baskets and put tshirts in one and my workout pants in the other and put those on the shelf. Great idea!
