Today I want to address the ugly beast of discontentment. It’s pretty hard to find peace in our homes if we are discontent with everything in it. Maybe it’s the lack of space, the lack of furnishings, the lack of decor or the mountains of clutter that causes us to want to fill our hours being outside the home rather than be relaxed and content within it. Whatever it is (and yes I know there could be many additional reasons we don’t want to be home but right now I’m focusing on these concerns) I think it’s important you give some thought as to why.
Would you rather be anywhere but home?
Do you fill your days with busyness outside the home with activities galore because the thought of being home stresses you out?
Would sanctuary be the last word you would use to describe your home?
What is it about your home that causes you discontentment?
Perhaps we can’t do anything about the size of our house but we most certainly can do something about the clutter, decor and attitudes we have about our homes without spending large amounts of money.
My blog friend Rachel recently wrote a post about How to Love What You Have which sparked the idea for this post. Rachel suggests five ways we can love what we have:
- I shall have less of it out
- I shall clean it
- I shall rearrange it
- I shall repurpose it
- I shall be grateful
I encourage you to go over and read what she says about each of those. Such good stuff!
My daily reminder:
So carve out a space in your home where you can create some calm to enjoy a relaxing moment or two. Shop your home as Rachel says, tackle the clutter and love what you already have.
Feel free to share your space with me on Instagram using hashtag #peacefulorganizedhome.

Love your sigh – do you remember where you got it?

It was from a local gift store, sorry I couldn’t be more helpful than that 🙁

I love the idea that things to not have to be perfect to be wonderful, that’s a HUGE issue I struggle with. But you’re so right.
I’ve been working recently on our bedroom: a room that has not gotten any special attention bc all the other rooms were “more important”.
But I began to be discontented when I looked at it, comparing what I saw there to what I see on Pinterest. Bad road to head down.
I decided to just take it one task at a time. To make a…list. Surprise! Recently, we tackled finally getting a headboard. Made a huge difference. Next up: new sidetables.
Thanks for the thoughts here on remaining contented with what we have, and taking the refurbishment of the areas in our home slowly.

I needed to read “life may not be perfect but can be wonderful.” Right now I’m so discontent with what is “IN” my home and your saying reminds me to use what I have and be grateful. Thanks.

Inspirational! All I can say is that ‘live life at fullest’: there is no need to grumble for what we don’t have because perfection and utopia is a myth. Thanks for sharing a similar thought, I completely agree with your ideals 🙂
