So here we are on Day #13 of this closet organization series. Today I want to talk about what I think every closet needs. Thin hangers. They will rock your world. For sure, no exaggerating! In fact my sister was totally skeptical when I told her this while I was there but quickly changed her tune when she tried them out for herself. She picked up a couple of boxes from Jysk on sale for $20.00 for 50 hangers. Awesome deal! You can also find them on Amazon. They are made in a variety of materials by a number of different brands.
Her tiny bedroom closet looks amazing now. I sure wish we had gotten pictures of the process for you but she was just so excited to jump in and get it done. Just take my word for it that when she took everything out of her closet (I love that she follows the advice of her big sis) the mountain on her bed was ginormous. Like huger than huge. She went through everything and did a lot of purging too! Here’s how it ended up.
I’m not kidding when I say you will literally double your closet with these type of hangers. For more details please visit this post where you’ll also find an old video I did of my own closet when I switched over to the thin hangers.
Do you use thin hangers in your own home?

Hi I bought these coat hangers I got them in pink and black. They are so slim lined and have organised my closet beautifully. I would recommend the initial purchase of these hangers, I have had mine now for several years. My husband has the black and I naturally have the pink ones.

I do not have the thin hangers, but after reading your information think I may have to change. Our closets are quite small. We’ve added a second rod, downsized the number of clothes, and yet we continue to stuff things in. As I was hanging my clean laundry yesterday, I had one of those thoughts that are later viewed as strange. My thought: “terrific! I won’t have to iron that wrinkled sweater, it will get pressed by the other clothes packed against it.” My closet must be ‘crying out for thin hangers’ yet I never listened before.

Yes, I am gradually switching over to these from plastic hangers. I got a big box at Sam’s but I’m not sure it beats $20/50. I also like the fact that clothes don’t slip off them.

I switched out most of my hangers for these last year. Love that my shirts don’t fall off of them.

I would love to buy a pack of these slim hangers but I am keeping my bulky wooden ones for now. This stops me from buying more clothes that I don’t need and reinforces the “one in, one out” rule. This is a wonderful solution for a tiny closet, though.

Why in Gods name do you do the one in one out. Do you know how much money you waste. Buy the amount of clothes you want and only give away if you see they arent in good shape.

I have seen these type of hangers popping up everywhere and wondered what the big deal is. If I can double (or even increase a little bit), the storage space in my closet that would be wonderful. Only question is, what to do with all the plastic hangers we have leftover afterwards? I guess I could donate them to a thrift shop who would probably make good use of them!
Laura says
Hi Brenda, yes my sister took all her old hangers to the local Goodwill.

The old video is missing…just a code where it should be. Would love to see it. I’m a thin hanger convert. Menards has them sometimes, too.

I can tell you now that Thin Hangers wouldn’t help me… I have thick clothes…

So I have the thin hangers and they drive me nuts! Normally I slip hangers in the neck of t-shirts to hang them up but the velvet stuff makes that impossible. Even button up shirts are hard to adjust their hang once they are in and hung up. Maybe it’s a personal issue 🙂 I got them for me and my toddler once the baby hangers didn’t keep clothes on and it’s even harder with the smaller sized clothes.

I have ordered these GREAT hangers off HSN and LOVE them. I can hang camisoles, cotton shirts, silk shirts and they remain on the hangers until I can wear them. They are the best investment I have ever made. I’ve even given them as gifts and all who receive them, rave about them and have ordered more.
Debbie says
They don’t distribute the weight of the garment over a large surface area and aren’t always wide enough which can cause indentations in the clothing. Apparently the metal can even discolor some fabrics, which is why when you get your clothes from the dry cleaners, there’s sometimes a paper sleeve over the hanger or some cleaners use coated hangers
Laura Wittmann says
Nope these type of hangers don’t leave indents and I’ve never once had a problem with discoloration.
