Today’s Digitwirl:
So today’s Digitwirl definitely looks interesting. This free Grocery iQ app is available for both iPhone, iPad and Android. It is an intuitive shopping list that allows you to build new lists quickly with features like predictive search and barcode scanning. I personally haven’t tried it as creating a grocery shopping list so isn’t a big deal for me. It takes me all of two minutes right after I create my menu plan and off I go. I even still manually cross things off my list with a good old fashion pen. Is that crazy?? Now I know many of you out there are much more tech savvy than I and I would love to know if you’ve used this particular app and what you think of it. Love it or leave it?
Notes from Carley:
Quick. Where is your grocery list written? I don’t know about you, but mine used to be on a note pads and scraps of paper and occasionally my palm. (Desperate times…) Then I discovered Grocery iQ, the smartest way to shop. Grocery iQ is a website and app that lets you easily enter everything you want to shop for so it’s always with you when you’re ready to shop. And you can share your list in case you’re lucky enough to not be the one sent to the supermarket. Type your items in manually, or use the cool barcode scanner. And, since we’re all about finding ways to save money, we love the fact that Grocery iQ pairs with Coupons.com so you can easily see what’s on sale and start saving. Watch this week’s Twirl and see why I always have my shopping list in the palm of my hand, instead of on it.

Digitwirl, please make your videos captioned so us deafies can watch it too. I think you probably have a lot of interesting things to say but the “auto-caption” option on youtube sucks, and puts words that make no sense to the topic at hand.
That said, i’ll check out grocery iq. I have installed a grocery list app on my iphone, which I like for the convenience of always having my list with me. but it isn’t a great option, for example, I can not delete a one time purchase (like for example, i saw something that i wanted to try on sale, put it on my list, bought it, didn’t like it, won’t buy it again, no need to keep it on my list) so it’s good to hear of another one being recommended. i was overwhelmed by the many options!!

I just discovered this app last week. It’s very similar to the Grocery Pal app I have used in the past. I haven’t used the bar code scanner yet, but love that it is an option. The app is on my phone so I can add to my list when things pop into my mind, instead of having to locate several pieces of paper with different items on them. I just add the items my family has requested from the general list we keep in the kitchen (if someone opens the last jar of peanut butter, they add it, etc.).
I also love the note section where I can note a coupon or other info. Plus, the list is organized by aisle, which makes me much more efficient!

I love Grocery iQ – especially the favorites option. Also, nice to be able to add items via the app or on the website (I type my big meal planning list on the computer and then add other items as I think of them on my phone) Oh and you can make lists for different stores, scan things and you always have it with you. As you can see, I love it 🙂

I’ve used Grocery IQ for over 2 years and love it, love it, love it! It’s the 1 app I tell everyone to download.

I’ve used this now for about a year and LOVE that it’s adaptable to both Android & Apple products (we have both in our home. Even better — it syncs between the two devices, as long as I use a universal log-in on both phones (as opposed to sharing). So it’s great when I need to say “Honey, can you pick up a few things from the grocery list, please”. GENIUS, I say! (And like Sue… I tell everyone about this app. It’s wonderful)

My issue with nearly every grocery/shopping app that I have tried using is that they don’t let me make lists for multiple stores, only one large list. When I make my paper shopping list, it is divided into quadrants so that I can list the items under columns for each specific store that I buy them at. It doesn’t help me to know that I need milk, salad dressing, cheese, and deodorant. What I need to know is that I need milk when I go to Costco, salad dressing from Whole Foods, cheese from Trader Joe’s, and deodorant from Target. Now an app like that would be truly helpful. I haven’t tried this app yet. Perhaps I will download it later today and see if it is better than some of the other free apps that I have tried.

I have used Grocery IQ for quite a while and it’s a good list. It definitely lets you make lists by store. You can add all of the stores that you use and when you add an item to a list you can select which store to buy it from. Then you can either look at your entire list or just choose one of the stores to narrow down the list.

I’ve never tried a grocery shopping app before. This might be a good time to start

For those who don’t have smart phones… or are just not phone savie…
I have a magnetic shopping list on my fridge door, with a pen attached next to it.
A few things like bread, milk, toiletpaper I buy every week, so have these already prewritten on each page of my shopping pad.
Most things in my pantry I have a spare of ….or in the multiples that I would use at a time (stock), . So, as soon as I take something out of my ‘stock’, I write it on my shopping list. This way I always have every ingredient etc on hand.
If the rest of the family members require something special, they too have to write it on the list too… eg special facial cleanser. If it’s not on the list, it’s not in the shopping trolley!

Love this app! I’ve got 4 stores in it (Target, Stater Bros, Costco and Trader Joes). It really helps keep organized with my shopping.

I was using this app for a while and really liked it, especially the ability to make notes and add coupons. I also like being able to open the website while I was menu planning and add what I needed on the computer instead of having to type it on the phone. When I was done, I could sync it to my phone. But after an update, it stopped working. it wouldn’t update my lists, or it would “forget” updated lists. The developers never did anything about it either. After one disastrous grocery shopping trip with a list that un-updated itself at the store, I went looking for a new app and ended up switching over to Our Groceries. It does a lot of what GroceryIQ did, and it works, so I stick with that one instead.

I tried to use the app most of the time it could not find what the product was with the barcode even on name brand stuff.
