Updated to add: The winner of the Peter Walsh book giveaway is Trina from Joy and Contentment!
I had 10 minutes to talk to Peter Walsh today. THE Peter Walsh, organizer guru and former host of the fantastic organizing show Clean Sweep. I had 10 minutes to be all cool and suave and impressive. Unfortunately it all sort of fell apart in the first 20 seconds when Peter Walsh said my name. He said my name and I totally didn’t hear what he said after that because I was thinking OH MY GOSH PETER WALSH JUST SAID MY NAME. Seriously if you didn’t know I was a dork before now, this will clearly cement it for you.
Peter said to me “you were part of the Back to School blogcast, is that right?” And I said, are you ready for this? I said “I am”. I AM??? It took me a second to realize what he’d just said, and then what I’d said and that the two didn’t match and for me to get totally flustered and try to correct myself. So much for suave and impressive. Sheesh!
After all that I’m still going to put up this video because even though I’m a dork, Peter is clearly not and has some great answers to some of the questions I’m most commonly asked around here.
I am loving the looks of Peter’s new line of organizing products called You Organized. I asked Peter if this line will be available in Canada and I’ve since found out that although it is not available in Canadian stores both the desk and console table are available for purchase on the Office Max site and they will ship to Canada. Unfortunately I don’t see the bulletin board system online for sale yet which is what I would most definitely be interested in. You can find the modular command center pieces here. I love that you can configure and rearrange the pieces of it to suit your needs.
Peter also has a new organizing DVD out that I was given to review and it is loaded with helpful, practical, easy to implement solutions. I love Peter’s no nonsense style that seems to get to the heart of the matter quickly and efficiently. As Peter takes you on a room by room tour he discusses numerous ways to streamline your systems in order to maximize space and reduce stress. It’s really fantastic. You can see a promo of it here.
Today though I’d like to give away a copy of Peter’s book that is specifically written for teens called It’s All Too Much, So Get It Together. This easy to read book is designed to give teens the steps they need to keep what is necessary, purge what is not, and organize and prioritize everything in between. Such a great book that is so encouraging and helpful and even though it’s written for teens it would really benefit just about anyone looking to have less junk, a clearer mind and a better life.
To enter to win a copy of this book simply leave a comment on this post prior to Sunday, May 2nd at 2:00 pm PST. I’ll use random.org sometime after that to select a winner. Good luck!
PS: If you’d like to join me in the dork club feel free to make me feel better by telling me something dorky you’ve done recently 🙂

camille says
Ok, I’ll be the first. When my son was dedicated at our church, I was super nervous. My arms fell asleep from clutching him so tight. I had “rehearsed in my mind” if our Bishop asks if he could hold my son, I would say sure. What I didn’t rehearse was that the Bishop would say look at this little one and just stand there for what seemed like 5 minutes. I’m guessing in hopes that I would offer my son to him. Of course that revelation did not come to me til the ride home. I felt bad. A second time the same thing happened where he was in front of my son making faces and I froze again, I just couldn’t speak. I was thinking I NEED TO SAY SOMETHING but nothing came out. It actually happened a third time if you can believe it. He’s well known but very down to earth. Too darn shy for my own good. So Miss Laura add me to your club!! Hope you feel better……. 🙂
Rebekah says
I could use a book to tell me how to get it together. 🙂
Kelly says
I can’t say I do anything dorky – others might beg to differ though 😛
I am drowning in junk though!
Kori says
That book sounds so helpful! 🙂
Mary Snow says
OMG Peter Walsh!! Yea, I’d be a bumbling idiot as well. And, probably drop my purse which would implode upon impact spewing a totally unorganized mess of junk that is totally unnecessary to carry around on a daily basis including but not limited to questionably clean/used kleenx… Yep, I can totally understand your fluster 🙂
I’d LOVE his book cant wait to see it & the dvd.

I’d love the book. Here’s my dorky moment:
I was at work and I saw a man cutting our grass. I noticed that he seemed to always have one hand in his pocket and so one day I called out something along the lines of ‘are you taking it easy with your hand in your pocket.’ He calls back ‘no I only have one arm.’ OMG I nearly died.
DebbieQ says

Dorkiness when meeting famous people is so easy to do – remember meeting Jean Chretien and not being able to speak. Total dorkiness here.
Kathy says
Who doesn’t love Peter Walsh? I have the original book “It’s All Too Much” and my 15-year-old daughter could certainly use the teen edition. She can’t part with anything and it’s driving me crazy! Thanks so much for this opportunity and I will definitely check it out even if I don’t win.
Kati says
I think I would have been dorky too! 🙂 I think he is great at his job but wouldn’t want him to come to my house!!! I think he’d make me get rid off too much stuff I think I just HAVE to have.
trudie says
Maybe I could convince my husband and son to watch the video together… So feel ya on the dork thing. Every time I open my mouth stuff like that happens–I tend to obsess for a little bit and then block it out forever!
Lindsey says
You did a great job!! Way to go! And I love listening to Peter’s accent….this video interview is going to get a ton of playbacks 🙂
Heather Dougherty says
Does getting so excited about my new vacuum’s attachments arriving and putting them to use immediately, in front of house guests, count? (I was just so happy I would be able to vacuum the stairs easier)
stacy says
I think I need to have my husband read “It’s All Too Much.” I mean, do we REALLY NEED 55 EMPTY cardboard boxes in our basement?? 🙂
As far as dorkiness goes, yeah, where do I start?? 🙂
Trina @ Joy and Contentment says

Sheila Gregoire says
Laura, what a great prize! I love Peter Walsh! My kids and I don’t have TV, but we sneak over to other people’s homes to watch Clean Sweep and What Not to Wear. We’re total self-improvement addicts!
What dorky thing have I done? Let’s just say that I’ve done a TON of live radio and TV interviews for some of my books, and the worst was when someone asked me to pray to close the show and I totally forgot how. It’s like my mind blanked. Then I recovered, and started to pray, but my prayer went too long (I had my eyes closed so I couldn’t see the producer jumping up and down frantically with the 10 seconds left sign, and the theme music began before I said amen. Boy did I feel stupid!

Cool – Peter Walsh!! What a fun interview – I’m more of a geek then a dork. At least according to my kids. Although the word dork is better when I stretch or dance in the living room! 😉

Melissa says
I only wish I could be as much of a dork as you! (That’s a compliment.) You got to meet Peter Walsh! 🙂
I’ll have to check out his line of products because those bulletin boards look awesome!
Most of my dorky moments are with my kids. The other day I said something and reversed two words and they all started giggling. When I asked them what they were giggling about they all chimed in…”You mixed up your words mommy!”
Cindy says
Sigh yeah, dorky, I always know exactly what to say in my head but the connection from my brain to my mouth is missing a few links ,
Am working on moving so any tips on decluttering are welcome!! and than how to stay decluttered, that’s my goal in the new house!! See if I can keep it that way!!
Rhonda Dale says
A great post! I’d love the book…we need help in every direction. HA!!
One of my dorky moments…at a concert way back in like 04 maybe we were back stage hanging out with the artist that we were friends with and he had recently grown out a bit of a beard…well he looked at me and said “How do you like my beard”…well due to the noise we all thought he said “How fo you like my beer?”. So I proceeded to be dumbfounded since there wasn’t any beer around us. LOL Then when we questioned him he yelled the question back at us again…this time we heard him say BEARD. SO he looked at me and I said, “I like it better…you look better”…which embarrassed the heck outta me b/c it sounded like I was telling him he looked bad before. So then I started explaining myself and looked like a complete idiot. HA!!
Tracy says
I feel like I am constantly doing dorky things lol. I blame it on a lack of sleep and trying to juggle everything with a family that consists of my sweetie, teenage daughter, twin boys in grade one and a 6 month old baby. My brain seems to be in constant confusion lol.
Yesterday I had made arrangements with a lady who was looking for a over the toilet cupboard to come pick it up that day. She emailed me asking if she could pick it up on Friday instead as she had made other committments now. It’s sitting in my entranceway and I’m thinking it’s Monday and don’t want it sitting there all week. Emailed her back saying I would like it gone sooner and after sending it realize it is Wednesday and it would only be one extra day than if she picks up on Thursday. Felt kind of bad for sounding like a you know what lol. Ooops!!
Anyway I would love this book to use with my daughter and pass it down as my kids grow up. My daughter is the age when she knows everything and mom nothing but if it comes from a book then it means something.
Good luck everyone!
Amber says
I just wanted to tell you I would have been starstruck with Peter Walsh also. After first seeing him on Oprah I decided that if he showed up at my doorstep that would be better than any of those movie stars out there! Something about a man that can help you sort through it all and get to the end result like he does.
Sharon says
Love all your tips Laura, I have recommeded your website to my friends down here in the lower mainland they love it too. Keep it coming!
Jessica says
This sounds like a great book! Sometimes it can be so helpful having someone else tell you what you should keep or get rid of and how to organize all your “stuff”.
Desiree says
Hi Laura!
Great job on the interview! I would love to win the book.
Sara says
Great interview Laura 🙂 Just to let you know I checked out the Office Max site and was able to find Peter’s bulletin board system sold in individual pieces. I just typed “you organized” in the search engine and all his products came up on the first page. Hope this helps!
Audrey says
Thanks so much Laura for the really great ideas! I SOOO need a system in our home. I would love to be entered in your draw.
Dorky! Well I’m with ya! My husband and I own and operate our own Photography business. The other day I answered the telephone giving just my name (it was a business call – so unprofessional), I proceeded to book a consultation with prospective clients, I made a note that the meeting was on Tuesday at 8 pm. Then, last night (Wednesday) my husband questioned me on the conflicting information I had recorded. We prepared for the ”possible meeting” last night, not sure if anyone woudl be arriving or if the meeting was next week! They arrived at the door and thank God we were ready! – you are in good company my friend!
Elisabeth says
I’d love the book–It always seems as if I have too much stuff and I’m always trying to get rid of it before I get more!
I’ve been a dork this week–I’ve lost coupons not once, but twice just because I insisted on going shopping when I didn’t have a babysitter and because I didn’t use paper clips or an envelope for my coupons. I feel so dorky!
Bethanie says
I’m a high school teacher–I could think of a few HUNDRED teens who could use this book!

Today I have reorganized and am ready for all the paperwork when it walks throught the door. My greatest hope is to teach my sons how to become organized too. We all have ADD and organization is a MUST in order for our family to be successful. We sail through the day when everything is in order. Thanks for help!

I’m the dorkiest dork! an example recently I went to Subway to get lunch, and I was exactly 1 dollar short to pay in cash so I paid with credit card and I totally blanked on my pin number so I said just cancel it I will use my debit card and would you believe it, I blanked on my debit card pin number too. omg.
I would love the book, and would like to see the video. Does it have a closed caption or subtitle option ? I have noticed that alot of documentaries or similar dvds are not captioned. 🙁
Anne Graumlich says
I would love to give this book to my 15-year old daughter. Thanks for the opportunity! I’m sure I’m dorky regularly, but I’m too tired to notice.
Candace says
This is a great givaway. My pre-teen daughter could really use something like this! (which is someone besides her mom giving her ideas about being organized) 🙂
My most recent dorky moment was this weekend. I took my kids to a local, nice hotel for a fun overnight swim/movie time. Anticipating how cold we would be after the pool I went to the heating/cooling unit which was on the floor under the window. I tried to adjust the knobs for heat and for fan and it wasnt working at all! I checked and there was no plug that was undone, so I went to the front desk and explained nicely that the system wasnt working. After swimming we headed back to the room and it was on high fan and high heat. It was great! Until it got too hot/loud for the movie. But the controls STILL weren’t working for me, so I went back to the desk. A few minutes later the maintenance guy comes back and shows me that, despite there being knobs on the unit, there is a thermostat on the opposite side of the room that controls everything. I was *VERY* embarassed!!
Abby @ They Lend Me Their Hearts says
I hope I win the book! I am a dork, always have been, always will be. In 12th grade my best friend and I were organizing the massive choral music library. We started on the first day of school, and stayed LATE on the last day of school to get it finished! We were in need of file cabinets and one day during choir, a custodian started wheeling some into the room and we both exclaimed, “Yay File Cabinets!”…. Yep, I’m a dork:o)
Leatrice says
I have a 14 year old collector of chess sets, penguins and Legos who needs this book.
Melinda says
I have teenager that really needs this book. FOR SURE!!
Ok I will put my remark about the recent dork moment. I was using a credit card at the gas pump and I did what it said slide quickly. I slide and it said unable to read card. I did the process over and over and over, still the same message. I thought I have to get gas what am I to do. I then realized that I had the card turned the wrong way…Note to self slow down and pay more attention.
Maria says
You did a great job on the interview! Thanks for the giveaway. My kids are entering the teen years, so we could sure use that book!

Plus I broke my tail bone in the process!~ I think I win.

Peter is so cool!
Hummm……something dorky? I once made a call to one of my childs friends house to speak to a parent (that I did not know) to set up a play date for the two of them.
I dialed the # and soon the machine picked up…..no body home.
So I start to leave my message after the BEEP.
I start to say who I am then……I hear another BEEP.
SSSOOOO I start over. I begin to say again who I am.
Before long I here a BEEP again? Puzzled I one more time start over with who I am……and you guested it I here another BEEP!!!!
So I decided their answering machine must be broken or something….I will just call them back later.
Well the embarassing truth is………it was MY call waiting that was BEEPING each time. So you guested it……I sounded like a total FOOL on that answering machine.
They probley said, who is that wierd lady…..she stops mid sentence then starts over…..she can’t even finish her thought!
Our kids never did make a play date 🙁
Blessings,
Georgiann

Love your blog! Thanks for the great giveaway!

Maybe my tween could read it and learn some stuff!!!!!!!!
Jennie @ A Welcoming Heart says
Peter Walsh’s new organizing DVD sound like a good one to get. I like the fact that it breaks it down room by room since that is usually the way I like to work when I do my chores around the house. I am not one that likes doing all of the same chores throughout the house like all the dusting, and then all the wiping of door knobs and such. I do that for some chores like vacuuming, and cobwebs but for everything else I work one room at a time.
Denni says
I am pretty sure I would have done the same thing! I LOVE Peter Walsh and am so glad he has written a book for teens. I teach fifteen year olds at a continuation high school and organization is one of the things that gets in the way of their success in school. I would love to get this book for some new ideas on how to help them get organized.
Karen says
Love Peter Walsh!!!!!!!!!!!

my college dau was just expressing to me “mommy i’m afraid i’m going to be one of those hoarders like on tv”. no, she’s not really at that level, but has a hard time getting rid of stuff and organizing what she does have. she loves to read; i think this book would be great for her!
Sue Bates says
Peter Walsh is a god! I can totally understand your behavior! I probably would’ve done the same. Oh this is one I hope to be picked for. I really need some help with my home office!
Camilla says
I love Peter Walsh . . . I was obsessed with watching Clean Sweep. Ever since baby arrived, my need for organization has significantly increased. There doesn’t seem to be a place for everything like there used to be.
Laurie says
I have a daughter that could so use this book. I probably could too! She leaves for college next fall and I am worried she has not learned a thing I have tried to teach her. Maybe if she read it somewhere else…..
Sandra says
What a fun read….I mean…what fun to read everyones’ dorky moments! I don’t feel so bad now. Once when I was trying to be so impressive at serving nice hot biscuits to my guests, I left one of two pot holders in my oven. The resulting contained fire (showing through the oven window) certainly told everyone the side of me that I always try to hide. At least I had the presence of mind in my embarrassment to then turn off the oven and smother the fire. Do I need Peter’s book? What do you think?
Laurie F. says
Would love that book! Love your site with all of your tips and inspiration for organization!

Sounds like a great book…not sure which son I would give it to:
my soon-to-be-graduating-college-senior
or my super-messy-pre-teen
Hmmmm, they both could use it, and I’m pretty sure they both think I am a dork sometimes 😉
Brenda says
Oh, I would LOVE this book. Not just for myself but my daughter and my mother-in-law.
Well here is one of my my latest dorky moments. It was a super busy morning and I had to get my car loaded and drive to a town about 30 minutes away. My mother-in-law called and I talked to her while running around getting things ready. I then grabbed my keys, purse and walked out the door. I got up to my car and I wondered why the conversation on the phone is so staticy. Well low and behold I was about to get into my car and drive away while talking on my HOUSE phone. Lesson learned-Sometimes multitasking is not such a wise idea.

I so need this book for myself, however, I have a pre-teen who loves to read, but needs help in organizing and staying organized. Thank you for sharing the command center photo…I am working on our center now and needed guidance. This helps a lot!
Adie says
My teen (and I) SO need this book!! I think it may even help her keep organized to get her assignments turned in on time!
I did a radio interview this week for work and in the middle of the interview I had a brilliant thought so she qued me up and in the middle of the thought my mind went COMPLETLEY blank, I probably could not have told her my name. I was mortified!!!
Anita says
I really could use that book. I seem to be always overwhelmed.
His system looks very similar to the ones I’ve been eyeing at Pottery Barn. You can veiw them here http://tinyurl.com/yywftna . I need 1 or 2 more gift cards from mypoints, etc to buy one.

I forgot to mention my kids are 11 and 12 with ADD/ADHD. We have always had trouble with keeping them organized. Just yesterday my daughter freaked out because she couldn’t find her theory book for choir and was in tears. I gave her a bag when Choir started to keep all her choir things in and she left it out, easily found after she was gone but not where it was supposed to be

Great post !! Who can’t help but be star struck by the awesome Peter Walsh !
His no nonsense approach is terrific and he delivers great advice. I am always glad to see his refreshing perspective on things.

I love Peter Walsh! I’d love to read this book & have my soon to be teenage daughter read it. She is a mess, always losing school papers, dance stuff, etc. Maybe this book will get through to her!~
sharon says
An organizing book for teens! What a great idea and I’m sure there are tips that moms can use, too!
Jenni says
Oh my goodness! My teen needs this book. In our home the dreaded packrat gene skipped a generation–my grandmother had a double gene and my mother got one and a half. I however have no trouble pitching things–they may build up for a bit, but after that I am able to let it go.
My 15 yo dd, though, wants to hang on to EVERYTHING. She got upset when we needed to replace our old fridge!
Thanks for the offer!
Danna says
Oooh, I REALLY REALLY need this! Small house, too much stuff, not enough time. Help me Peter!!
Alicia says
Ummm….. Peter Walsh is like the ELVIS of the organizing world! Of course you acted like a dork! Who wouldn’t???? LOL Thanks for offering this book!
Sue says
I love Peter Walsh. I always enjoy his show and information. I would love to win his book for my teen.
Maria Matter says
Oh I would love to win this! Clutter has taken over my house…my life!!!
It’s hard to know where to start!!!
Blessings!

My oldest daughter could really, really use this. She carries 3 overstuffed bags to and from school every day, and I’m not sure she knows what is in any of them. (Backpack, gym bag with multiple pairs of shoes, and oversized purse-like bag.) Both my daughter’s rooms could use a good purge.

HOLY comments. First of all, I loved the interview. Those products look so freaking cool! Definitely want to buy that bulletin board system. I didn’t think you sounded to nervous/dorky, and the questions you asked him were very helpful. I’m pretty much a dork all the time ’cause that’s how I roll, if that makes you feel any better. 🙂
By the way, you don’t need to enter me in the drawing. I think he’s a great organizer, but I don’t have a teen or anything, so I just want to make sure someone more deserving wins.

would love this book. =) love your blog.
Ann Marie Malicki says
He would have me at hello. I love his accent and his work. Great blog!
Sue says
My daughter and I could both use this book. As for ‘dork-dom’? All I can say is ‘Welcome to my world’… lol
Misha says
You’re too cute, lol~ being a dork is <3 and I'm with you on the bulletin board system~ I absolutely love it!
Charity says
Sure, I’m in for the book. As for dorky?? I’m dorky all the time. I’m always reorganizing things and “stealing” ideas from other people when I go visiting…but I haave to be careful because my hubby isn’t always so thrilled with my ‘dorkiness’, especially when I buy something else thinking it will solve my problem, lol.
Sandra says
That book would be perfect for my daughter!
Barbara Szyszkiewicz says
I’ve got 2 teens–that book would be just the thing for our whole family.

Such a fun giveaway!
Have you read How to Organize (Just About) Everything Laura? LOVE IT!
Mindy says
What perfect timing! I just had a nice talk with my dh about how we needed to clean & reorganize the house (I’m an organizer, so it really bugs me when things aren’t organized anymore!). My last comment was that our teens WILL clean and organize their rooms this summer – dd when she comes home from college for the summer & ds when school gets out. So, this book will be required reading for both of them prior to starting the “dreaded cleaning of the room to get mom to stop bugging me” process!
Laura@HeavenlyHomemakers says
Oh my goodness…you did NOT sound like a dork at ALL. You sounded professional and smart and with-it. Really, I mean it. Now ME? You know I’m a dork.
Ruth says
Definitely interested in this giveaway!
Christine says
I love his information. I would love to have his book, we have a small house and no room for all my junk! 🙂 You aren’t a dork, just at a loss for words in the presence of someone you admire!
Elana says
I love Peter Walsh! I miss Clean Sweep!
Susan says
What a cool system. We could use that and the book for sure. Actually I’d love Peter to just come in and make it all better…
Christy says
I don’t know if I could have even spoken. I love Peter Walsh. I wish he could come to my house and do a clean sweep (of course, I’d clean up before he got here which would kind of defeat the purpose). Oh well!! I want to win the book.
Lorrie says
Love your blog, and it looks like a great book too!
Brooke May says
Maybe when I had a phone interview recently and was aksed “What do you like about this job?”. Well, I couldnt even remember the ad, so I told her how I loved that it was full time.
Um, it was part time. Needless to say I didnt get any further.
Harmony says
My son is almost 12 and really needs this book!

By the way, I realize I’m too late for the giveaway but I really am glad you passed this info along, I’m going to look for the book!
