Every year I try to find an inexpensive ornament to make for family and friends. This year to save time and torture my kids have some holiday fun I wanted to find something that my two big kids could help me with. I actually found these ornament instructions in one of my Taste of Home cookbooks believe it or not. They were super easy to make and they really didn’t take long at all to put together. Oh and cheap too, just the way I like it 🙂
Christmas Carol Scroll Ornament Instructions:
Scan a Christmas song page and save to your computer. Open up a Word document and insert your picture in four times to get four to a page. You might have to play around a bit to get it to fit. Then print them out on your printer. I used slightly colored/patterned scrapbook paper. Cut out as many as you need.
Cut 5 inch lengths of 1/4 inch wooden dowel (I used 3/16″ dowel size). Paint them with red acrylic paint and let them dry. I gave this job to my son (10).
Next lightly brush the sides of your song sheet with glue (we just used good old Elmers) and dip them into gold glitter to add sparkle. My daughter (12) loved this part. Let’s just say we had glitter EVERYWHERE!
Next take two pieces of your cut dowel and glue the top edge of your paper over the top of one dowel, then glue the bottom edge around the bottom of the other dowel.
After the glue is dry, roll the top end of the ornament down and the bottom end of the ornament up, rolling each end about hallway. When you release the ends, you have a scroll shape. Mine didn’t go too scroll like but I think that was due to the type of paper I used.
Tie a piece of gold cord or black craft wire to the top dowel. Then add a bow for an extra special touch. My daughter wrote Merry Christmas 2009 on the back of each.
Your ornament will soon have folks singing its praises! 🙂
Thanks Taste of Home for coming through for me AGAIN!

What a great gift! Last year I started having the kids help me with handmade ornaments for family too, I’ll have to keep this one in mind for next year.

What a great personalized ornament! I’m sure it’ll be treasured. WTG involving your kids, too.
I like the look of your blog update. It is streamlined; clean lines. 🙂

I saw this idea in a different format…with a child’s Christmas wish list for Santa! It was SUPER cute, had their name and the year, and could be a keepsake for you and eventually them. The kids could help put it together too, just like yours!

What a surprise to see my Christmas Carol tree ornament! I submitted this idea to Crafting Traditions magazine and it appeared in their January 2004 issue and they actually paid me for it! The instructions were mine almost word for word! I still have the issue. Glad so many have enjoyed it.
