A couple of months ago I did a review on the 3M Command Hooks that I absolutely adore. A couple of my readers asked if I use them to hang my calendars that I have all over my house. Why of course I do! They are perfect for people like me who love to change their minds on a regular basis 🙂
Earlier this year my girlfriend got a new stainless steel fridge and realized that she wouldn’t be able to hang her magnetic calendar back up on the front of it as she did with her old fridge. Did you know stainless steel fridges aren’t magnetic? I totally had no clue. Anyway she needed to come up with a solution to fix this little problem and of course didn’t want to use anything permanent that might wreck her gorgeous new fridge.
That’s where 3M Command Picture Hanging Stripscame in to play.
These are basically velcro strips, with the same removable backing that the Command hooks use, designed to securely and easily hang pictures on the wall. And guess what? They also worked great for hanging my girlfriend’s calendar on the fridge. I love it when a plan comes together!
Let’s take a look. Sorry about the picture quality…it’s very hard to take pictures of stainless steel…oh the glare, the glare!
The white bits are the strips on and ready to go. One part of the strip goes on the fridge, the other part goes on the actual calendar and then you connect them both together. It’s so romantic 🙂
Up close and personal.
Ahh all better.

the last photo didn’t come up….
But I did see these recently, when I was looking for some velcro strips. I wondered just how good these are and how strong they are. I didn’t take a very good look at it to find out how much weight it will hold. I absolutely hate nailing holes in the wall for frames only to find out they aren’t perfectly lined where I want it to be.
Sometime last year I read a blog somewhere about something similar ( I don’t think it was the same brand) for photos and that the person liked them, but like a fool, I forgot to bookmark it…They used it to do a photo frame collage in their hallway. Gosh I wish I could remember the URL so I could find out if the photos are still sticking up there a year later.

Hmm that’s strange I can see the last photo on my end. If anyone else has problems can you let me know.
Ter, I use 3M hooks all the time and have never had a problem with them. It’s very important to check the weight they hold though (marked on the front of the package) and use what is sufficient for your project.

I can’t see the last picture with the calendar hanging on the fridge either. But I bet it looks good! 🙂

1st I can see all the photos fine – so all must be fixed now 🙂
2nd – These are my fav 3M product 🙂 I use them for all my smaller frames. I love that they “hang” flush against the wall and don’t “tilt” if someone happens to touch it or the earth moves – LOL
* I’ve had mine up in our current apt for close to 2 years without anything falling down *
3rd – Great Idea for the Calendar on the fridge 🙂

Just wanted to say ‘thanks’ to the commenters who have shared that they haven’t had any fall. I’ve been such a skeptic of this product, but I’m convinced to try it out now. Thank you!

I bought some about a month ago, but can’t find them. How doofus is that! I think I need an organizational intervention…

I love the 3M hooks, so when I found the velcro strips I tried them. I had so much trouble getting the two velcro strips to hold on to each other that all I got was some aggravation. I must have been doing something wrong. Any tips?

I have 5 pics hanging on my kitchen backsplash with the velcro 3m things. The trick is that you have to press really hard to get the two to stick together. It’s not like regular velcro that sticks at a slight touch. These have to press all the way in. HTH.

that is such a good idea. We just got a stainless steel fridge and I had no idea how I was going to hang my calender.

Hi Laura!!! 🙂 I didnt’ realize those fridges weren’t magnetic either! Hmm, how interesting!
When I made my post yesterday, I thought of you…it’s about organizing using planners and binders…ALOT! 😉 I know you will totally feel as though YOU were writing the post! LOL

I love 3M stuff!!! We even got a full length mirror that hangs with this stuff (comes with everything) for our bedroom closet and then one for my daughter to practice her “dancing”.

I LOVE these!! I used them to hang all of the pictures I have in my scrapbook room and 2 other items in my kitchen. They are THE BEST!! My husband hates nails in the walls and I always have to beg to hang something but not when I have these strips!! I hang whatever I want and he doesn’t need to be there or give his approval because I can just remove it if we don’t like it. These are the best!!!!!

That’s a great solution. I didn’t realize that stainless steel fridges weren’t magnetic till I got one either. I have the French door style and I don’t think there’d be much room for a calendar.
Fortunately the sides are magnetic and the side of my fridge is visible so I hang my calendar there.
One thing I like about my fridge not being magnetic is that I am not tempted to hang all kinds of “stuff” on it like I used to on my white fridges. The front is nice and uncluttered (unlike the rest of my house).

How creative! Yes our Kenmore Elite fridge was like that and as luck would have it, it was a lemon so we returned it to Sears and i insisted on a white plain no frills fridge. I am now head over heals in love with my MAGNETIC Amana. However, I am so getting some of those strips because those just have ME written all over them. I am already making a mental list of stuff I plan to hang! yay!
Alison @ HH says
I’ve used those too! I used one in my previous home on the side of a kitchen cupboard to hang a tiny chalkboard that told of the menu for that night! I didn’t want to nail anything to the cupboard, and these were a perfect solution1

I used these to hang up my daughter’s name on her bedroom wall last year. They rock.

I’ve used them in my new home and they took off the paint–and it wasn’t the cheap kind it was sherwin williams. Never used them since.
Jo says
I used the hanging strips many times in my old condo–not sure what kind of paint I had used there. I believe it was an assortment including Behr, maybe some Glidden and even B. Moore. In my new space, I just got the room painted with Sherwin Williams a few weeks ago–the paint was new and perfect…but today I hung pictures with 3M strips. There are several areas now where the paint is chipped; the chips can’t be seen behind the frames, but the walls will have to be repainted when I move. I believe the problem is the Sherwin Williams, so I won’t be buying SW again.

I use 3M hooks all the time. I even have two outside on my porch to hang small wind chimes or a small bird feeder. They have been there for at least three years now and have not fallen. they hang there in the wind, rain, and snow. They are under the eve of the porch so don’t get direct weather falling on them. Love them.

I use these all over my house. We live in a 300 year old stone cottage so the walls are all stone and definately not smooth and even. These strips work to hold all my artwork- even large framed peices. The only issue I’ve ever run into is on really humid/ rainy days the walls “sweat” and they loose some of their stickiness- but I just make sure to check on them every once in awhile and replace a strip if I need to.

I LOVE the Command strips. I use both the velcro and the regular ones at school. One thing I’ve done is put them on sheet protectors so I can just slide the pages in and out. It holds the lists of achievements my students reach on their recorders. I keep it by the door and it’s been a big topic of discussion. Until now, keeping things on concrete walls just didn’t do what I always wanted.
I’m tempted to use a velcro one on my cell phone so I can stick it to my dashboard. I just can’t decide if I’d like the velcro feel under my hand when I’m using it that way.

That is a lovely refridgerator. I love the freezer on the bottom design, it makes it so much easier to find stuff in the fridge. I have a stainless as well and have found that some magnets do stick to them (they must be really strong magnets I guess), But they will scratch the stainless finish so its best not to use them. I like the 3-M idea, those shouldnt ruin the finish at all 🙂
Rebecca in Colorado says
Sooooooo romantic! 😉
and regarding comment #1 about holes in the wall: I recently noticed that the posters completely covering my pre-teen’s walls are not up there with tape nor command strips nor fun tack. Yup. They’re all there with push-pins. This is going to be one fun wall to re-paint someday. Yes, Laura, same girl who says, “That was random.” Lots of random holes.

I guess I won’t have a stainless steel fridge. I’ve got lots of magnets on mine and would be sad to get rid of them. Maybe that’s why my refrigerator of 30 years (really) has stayed running all these years. TEEHEE!!

I LOVE all 3M command strip products! The picture hangers especially have helped me to decorate my house. I’m about to go out and get a bunch tomorrow to begin my Christmas decorating. 🙂
Tamara says
We use these in our house too. They are great and do as the packages say. I think I will use them for Christmas this year too.

I LOVE THE COMMAND HOOKS and hanging strips – we are living in rental home (Adobe) with very high-end plaster walls that we cannot nail into – I use the hooks for everything we hang – 🙂
Amy says
Great idea! I also love your fridge hehe!
Amber says
Does anyone know of these would work on white-washed oak cabinets? My fridge is “built in,” and I wouldn’t mind having a list on the side out of direct view…
I think I’ll try the hook type in the living room for our advent calendar this year.
Rochelle says
Very nice! I love those things.
But don’t do what we did. We had a Merry Christmas sign for outside that we couldn’t locate a place for… hubster decided to put it on the front of the house… with those hooks. They sure stay put all right, even with all the weather! 6 years later and those puppies are not coming off! Grrr.
😉

Regarding the stainless steel fridge just so readers know, our stainless is magnetic. We have the kind that does not get fingerprints. I am not sure if there is a specific name for it or if it is a different make-up of materials, but it is stainless steel and is magnetic. If you are in the market for a stainless I would suggest taking a magnet with you and testing it out in the store 🙂 Great idea for hanging on this one that is not.

I use these everywhere in the house. I have never had a problem with them – ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM. Tip: Do you have photo’s hanging on the wall (the conventional way) and do your children walk by, touch them, and make them hang crooked? Have no fear – just place one of these on the bottom of the frame to hold it securely to the wall – and wa la! They can’t move it anymore!
Cristina says
I love these hooks! I use them for everything because I tend to change my mind often about where things should go.
I will be whipping more of them out for Christmas when the stockings go up!
xx

This is fantastic! I have a fridge just like yours and wanted to be able to stick stuff to it! Thanks for the great idea!

I LOVE these velcro strips. My boyfriend and I hung some quite weighty wood and glass framed photos, that are like 16×24, quite large, and they’ve been up and on the wall for a couple months now. I thought he was nuts for thinking they would hold the weight- they are WONDERFUL! I feel like I want to spread the word on these life-savers!! I’m glad you are!
Jo says
I wonder if I put a buch of the on the back of wood and stuck them to my apartment wall (cause i need shelves n were not allowes to drill or nail) if it would hold???? all i need to put i=on the shelves are toys my kids are grounded from or maybe just a couple lil decor nothing major or heavy…except the shelf
Laura says
I’m not sure that would work Jo…they are more designed to be used as hooks and not to hold things up.
