Organizing a child’s room

My friend Laurie from the great site Tip Junkie just underwent back surgery on Thursday so to help her out while she recovers I’m guest posting over there today.

My post is all about using the PROCESS steps I created to help you with organizing your child’s room and even more importantly teach you how to empower your child in the process at the same time.  If you are interested, please click below to read that article.

Organizing your child’s room is a PROCESS

Taking your kids to organization 101 is a good idea. Just remember that it’s super difficult to be organized without a closet or shelving system for all the stuff. I wrote a post on my blog about frustrated neat-nics.

Love the PROCESS explanation, Laurie. One of my tips: I have two boys and tons of lego and bionicles. My boys like making their own creations so we don’t have to keep each set of lego or bionicles separated from the other sets so I use clear, under-the-bed clothing containers (one for lego, one for bionicles) to store them. If the toys are in their room, they can go under the beds when not in use. If they are being stored in the basement play area, they can go under the ping-pong table or the couch. The BIG plus to this type of storage? Because the toys are spread out and in a not-too-deep layer and in a clear container, the boys can find what they are looking for fairly easily. No more dumping to search for that one particular piece. (The cutest thing? When I implemented this system a few years back, my then-three year-old saw the new container filled with lego and promptly sat in it and began working on a new creation!)
Another lesson for me: my ideas of zen living and personal treasures is different from my boys’ — so sometimes a little letting-go (from mom’s end) is in order…!

I’ve had an entire weekend of people giving me funny looks over menu planning, then seeing a look of “Ahhh I get it!” go off in their eyes when I explain why. So thanks for having this and encouraging others to plan.
