If this isn’t willpower I don’t know what is!

in Containerizing,My Life

Yesterday my girlfriend dropped by to tell me that my local grocery store had just put out a display of glorious baskets.  She also mentioned that they were so beautiful she almost licked them.  Now that’s a good friend! It also led me to believe that these baskets must really be of the special variety and I better get down there immediately before the rush on baskets caused them to disappear before I even got to inhale and fondle their pure loveliness.  Seriously my heart may or may not have been racing out of my chest ever so slightly.

I will have you know though that I showed some serious restraint here my friends.  Really I’m not even sure how I did it but I did not purchase a single one.  Did you catch that?  I did NOT purchase a single glorious lick worthy, put me on display for all the world to see, basket.

Instead I stared at them for what seemed like hours as I tried desperately, perhaps even frantically, to come up with some location, any location, that I could show off forty one of these in my home and justify the cost.  Alas it wasn’t to be and I walked away.  I may have shed a tear or two.

Let’s recap:

  1. Beautiful lick worthy baskets available at my grocery store
  2. Did not purchase lick worthy baskets at my grocery store
  3. Sadly no where to display beautiful lick worthy baskets in my home at this time
  4. Unfortunately lick worthy baskets are out of my price range
  5. Took a picture of lick worthy baskets for all of you to see
  6. Moved on and am now content to just lick the picture

The end.

Those baskets do look good enough to lick. Good job restraining yourself. Since when do grocery stores have anything that look cuter to lick than popcycles? I’ve never seen any cute baskets at my grocery store. (Maybe that’s a good thing.) :)

Hi, just found your blog. I love organization too! Michael’s had all their baskets 50% off this week. Might be worth checking out if you have a Michael’s in your area.

Sigh…unfortunately we don’t. We have grocery stores and dollar stores and that’s about it. Oh and a Walmart about an hour away. I really do live at the end of nowhere.

So funny… I do that ALL the time! I see a lovely container, and I will stare, trying desperately to find a function.

Great job walking away! The only thing worse than leaving a pretty basket behind is seeing a pretty basket in your house with nothing to hold, and no space in which to fit.

Sigh.

Lori that is so true. I do have quite the stockpile of cheap baskets in my house but I don’t like to stockpile the expensive ones. I need to have a purpose for them before I buy…in most cases :)

Of course you didn’t buy those overpriced baskets. They were still way too much. Go to a Big Lots and get something that is just as lickable but not going to break your budget.

Haha wow I am the same way. Every time I see baskets I get SOOOO excited…but then I have to logically think about whether or not I have a place for them. And I never do. Sad, sad.

This is how unorganized I am: I don’t even know what to do with pretty baskets like that. I’ve found really cute ones before at excellent prices, put an assortment of sizes in my cart, then unloaded them when I realized I had NO IDEA what I was going to do with them when I got them home.

One thing I didn’t convince myself not to buy was a 3 piece set of gorgeous hat boxes for 5 pounds (about $7.50). I have them stacked on a corner table in my living room. I keep thinking I should probably put something in them, but so far haven’t thought of what! I’m thinking of using the bottom one to store my son’s PSP when I ground him from it. I don’t think he’d ever find it there!

LOL!

It seems to me that other customers might complain about your fondling baskets in public. I doubt the baskets would complain. :)

You are too funny. Glad you used restraint though. I’ve seen baskets just as beautiful cheaper, so I’m sure you will stumble on some too.
Jo-Ann’s fabrics has beautiful ones and with either sales or their great coupons, you can get the really cheap.

Laura, I would shudder to think what you would do with all the baskets that I get to work with at SOLUTIONS – the Organized Living Store…From now on, I will not be able to set up a display of baskets without thinking of you.

Licking baskets? For some reason, that one just tickled my funny bone. I keep picturing your friend sneaking little licks in the basket store – sheesh!

Laura,

1. I want you to make a plan to visit and stay with me. I used to have basket fetish also. I learned how to make my own baskets, and it really helps.

2. If you want to shop, we have a ton of places that have baskets. Not all baskets are created equally, though. You are correct to pass those up. Save up for nice quality ones.

I just love baskets. I have little ones, big ones, odd shaped ones, ones for all holidays. Baskets in every room and none of them have any real use. I just think that they are pretty.

Hey Laura – we met at conference and I’ve been over to your blog a few times since then. Thanks for the humour you bring to the organizing world.

Stay tuned for my site – much more developed in two weeks, and if you use your scanalog for House and Home mags, keep an eye out for the March Organizing issue. You might just see someone you know.

Happy organizing,

Clare
ps. I have a similar frequency to my piling / filing strategy. : )

Do some of those baskets have chocolate in them or painted like chocolates? I’ve seen the bowls that have Skittles or M&M’s between the layers of plastic. Would definately be a conversation piece!
