Being Still

by Laura on January 7, 2009

in My Life

I originally posted this last January and it’s a moment I never want to forget.

I have a 2 year old son.

He is an active boy.

He rarely sits still.

Even when he is watching TV he is doing something else at the same time.

I’m a 36 year old mom.

I’m an active lady.

I rarely sit still.

Even when I am watching TV I am doing something else at the same time.

The two of us are a lot alike that way.

The other night I threw caution to the wind and laid down on the couch to watch a movie without doing anything else. No folding laundry, no blogging, no eating, just being still. About 10 minutes into the movie my little guy came into the room crawled up onto the couch beside me, snuggled in and fell asleep. For an hour and a half I got to hold my sweet little boy in my arms while he slept. He didn’t move and neither did I. I didn’t want to wake him. I wanted to bottle this moment forever in my mind. Holding him and breathing him in while I rested my head on his.

Two busy bodies, one young, one not so young, finding comfort in each other’s arms.

Finding time to just be still.

I’m so thankful I didn’t miss it.

Laura, that’s beautiful, and certainly a moment to cherish! My six-year-old is seldom still these days, and even less often does he let mama just hug on him, so when those moments come, I try to slow down and just enjoy them. The laundry and bills and homework and meal preparation will all still be there later.

I loved it when you posted it last year and I still do. My daughter, now two curled up with me last night. I love those moments!

(I don’t love it so much when it happens in the middle of the night, which she is doing a lot of as well.) Oh well, I will look back on these sleepless nights one day and wish for them back.

wow, I am almost in tears. that is so simply put, finding time to be still with young kids is hard. my 2 year old was ill over thanksgiving and i was able to cuddle with him for a few hours while watching tv. i do not long for him to have a high fever again anytime soon, but it was nice to have him so close, needing mommy again like when her was a baby.

I know that feeling! I get that from my old rescue cat too. He’s the only thing that would may be stay on the couch for longer than 5 minutes. Love your website, I’ve been here an hour :)

I read somewhere once, that when you hug your kids, never letgo..don’t be the first one to let go. I do this. When we hug I wait till they let go. The grow way too fast!! I cherish every hug. It’s never just a quick one. : )

I can so totally relate. I LOVE those rare moments, and just soak them in when they happen. I wish life could always be so slow as to allow them! I have a two year old son too, and just savor the awesome cuddle time…there’s nothing better!!! So glad he enjoys it too! :)

Yep, I hear ya! I’m a multi-tasker too and I never watch TV without doing something else. I’d just get too bored. But it is nice when you slow down for a minute and have a little special time with your kids.

Wow, that almost brought tears to my eyes. I have a 3 year old son and know how valuable those moments are. When he’s sick he slows down and even lets me hold him for a while. His little world is so confusing at times i wonder what’s going thru his brain, and i hope he knows how much i love him.

Beautiful! I need to escape the tyranny of the “urgent” so that I can enjoy those moments also. Thanks for the reminder.

What a lovely moment for the both of you. I had a similar experience yesterday. My 3 y.o., who’s always moving too, and I took a nap in his anywhere chair. Tight fit but oh so cozy.

Cherish those moments,…for in a blink of an eye they’ll be walking down the wedding aisle and you’ll be wondering where the last 20 some odd years went to….

funny you should post this today. Last night my 3 year old got out of bed at 11:00 and curled up on the counch with me for an hour. That is the longest I have cuddled him since the NICU. He, like yours, is busy. You’re right it felt wonderful.

It is so great you did this. They do grow up too fast and I am finding as mine grow older that time is so precious. Hugs, Bobbi Jo

I know exactly how you feel. The other night my 4 yr old son, who NEVER sits still curled up on the couch with me. I didn’t want it to end, so we slept on the couch together.

I have a lot of memories of laying on the couch in the middle of the night, holding my baby daughter on my shoulder. She had constant ear infections until age 2. She’s the youngest of our 3 kids and this summer she’s getting married. I’m sorry she had the pain of those ear infections, but I’m thankful for those middle of the night memories.

Liliana and I are the exact same way! I’d love to have a moment with her like that. It’s a miracle if she even pauses long enough to hug me!

Thanks for sharing!

ps. That Patrick Swayze (sp?) interview is playing again next week.
