I love my retreating to my bedroom each night. I love walking into my room, climbing into my comfy bed and snuggling under my cozy duvet with a good book. I sigh every time. This is my space, my room away from the stresses of the day, my room that brings me joy and comfort everywhere I look, my room that I share with the one I love. It is my sanctuary.
If you read my friend Lylah’s post yesterday you’ll know that she also believes in the importance of creating a sanctuary in your bedroom especially for your marriage. She had this to say:
Your marriage is worth creating sanctuary in the bedroom. If this space needs a new touch, read Hebrews 13:4 and then pray. Pray about how to create sanctuary in this space. Pray for intimate times of communication with your husband. If you’re stuck in this area, then let the prayers of mine from my book – Power Prayers for Your Mighty Man help you.
So today, Lylah would like to offer a free copy of this ebook as an encouragement to any of you that are trying to create a bedroom sanctuary, an environment that will be a blessing to both you and your husband. Simply send her an email at [email protected] before Friday at 10:00 pm and put PPMM in the subject line.
Then tell me what one small thing you can do today to make your bedroom a cozy, warm haven?

I am in the middle of spring cleaning right now and my bedroom looks more like a storage space than a haven so today I am going to start finding other places to put these items. It might take awhile to finish but it’s a step in the right direction. Thank you so much for this awesome post. 🙂

I use lots of B&BW eucalyptus-spearmint linen spray. I also try to have soft, soothing, eclectic (or classical) music playing…just something to wind down by. I keep it playing all day, so even when I’m busy with housework, I slow down when I enter the bedroom and hear it. :0)
Thanks!

The biggest thing for us was cutting out the clutter! We have had a handle on it for a couple of years now,but every now and again it we will creep back into our space. I feel so calm coming into our refuge.
My Superman would perfer NO Children on the bed. We try to adhere to it, but sometimes they all like to pile in on a Saturday! The last time I made over the room, I found silk looking table clothes on clearance in ice blue and taupe. The made wonderful curtains that match our duvet and our “Always Kiss Me Goodnight” print. Prayer and Kisses very important you know!

Basically, if I could just put my clean, folded laundry away, then it would pretty much be all set!

Probably to clean my stacks of books LOL. What I love is our hot tub off of our bedroom, and our pool – which is soothing to lay on the bed and look at!
Fun post! Inspiring!!

I love my bedroom. It is the first room I clean and it is the least cluttered. I enjoy the days that Bekah takes a nap and I have time to crawl into bed with a good book. I usually end of falling asleep!

I think it is very important to not have a TV in the bedroom. Years ago we had one in there, I thought it would make me more intimate, cause we could snuggle and watch tv..oh how I was wrong.. All it made me do was fall asleep! For 3 years now we have not had a TV in our bedroom and it makes it much nicer and more relaxing. Although, right now a small one is in there from me being sick a few weeks ago and I was laid up in bed for a weekend. Somehow it hasn’t been put back, but it will be tomorrow! Also, lots of pillows make a bed comfy I think! I think that is a female thing though 🙂
Blessings~

I am slowly working on having this room look and feel better. It’s small, so there’s not a lot of room for clutter…but it still seems to creep in. I like my soft lighting lamp that’s by the bedside…it creates a nice lighting in the evening time to read by. I do have a question though…how do we make our dressers not look so cluttered? hmmm…maybe a pretty box or basket for the hairbrush and the makeup and the deoderant…I may have just answered my own question! lol

My room is the most cluttered in the house. If I could just get folded laundry out of there it would help.

Thanks for this excellent post. After I read it I moved our computer out of our bedroom. It’s only been in there a couple of months. We moved it in there to discourage us from getting on the computer so much but all it did really was make the bedroom NOT a sanctuary. 🙂
I love our bedroom and it is a real treat to retire to the bed and read my favorite book or magazine.

We don’t have a TV in our room. Now if I could just get a handle on the laundry in there…
I recently found pretty new springtime bedding on sale and scooped that up, so it’s brightened things up a bit.
I spray Febreze Lavender & Vanilla comfort before going to bed…it’s so soothing!

After 3 years in our “new” house, I FINALLY got around to putting my bedroom and bathroom together last week.I LOVE buying new linen sets every season, so I painted the walls a soft, neutral latte color, to make it easier to coordinate new bedding. We painted the ceiling a very faint, pale blue and the colors made it INSTANTLY more relaxing and calming. I placed lavendar candles in 2 sconces, and placed just a few live plants in both the bedroom and bathroom. To top off the spa feeling, I found a chocolate brown silk blanket to throw across the taupe quilt.I’m in the process of sawing down the legs of an old sofa table to re-purpose as a bench at the end of the bed. With young kids, the rest of the house is DEFINTELY not so “luxurious,” but it’s nice to have a special retreat at the end of the day. And the number one rule-only 3 things are allowed on our bedside tables: one lamp, one alarm clock and ONE book. Now I LOVE my bedroom, and I can’t believe I waited so long to get it together.

Oooh, I’ve been working on my bedroom because I TOTALLY agree with what you say about it being our sanctuary with our husbands! For some reason, keeping my that room clean is hardest for me!! But…about all I lack in there today is to put away some clean clothes. I’ll go do that RIGHT now!

I am a frequent reader, infrequent commenter. I think this is a great topic and look forward to seeing how everyone does! My mom and I worked really hard last September to perk up my master bedroom, she felt it was crucial. It was a retreat, but we didn’t maintain it. It ends up being piled with laundry, both clean and dirty. Also various toiletries, toys, etc. I need to work on it again!

I am getting ready to put pictures up on the walls. We just moved here in August and have a lot that we have wanted to do. I love having my pictures on the walls. To me, it’s a reminder of who lives here, gives a personal touch to the house. My bedroom gets pituresand posters only he and I need to see… 😉

I need to finish replacing the blinds and actually hang curtains. We have lived in our home for 11 years and I have never had curtains… 🙁

I really need to put my art up and get rid of everyones clutter that ends up in my room and I need to get my computer out of my room!!

I completely agree. Which is why the first thing I do in the morning is make my bed. Now if only I could stop shoving things in the closets/drawers/other drawers and creating junk spots.

I also love my bedroom and more importantly, my bed.
At night when I jump in I just lie there and wiggle my toes with pleasure for a bit enjoying being there.
Then I grab my Bible and my book 🙂

I actually came by because I have something for you at Miller Manor. Today is my blogoversary and I am having a little celebration. Thank you for all the comments you’ve left on my blog and in emails. I really appreciate how much you encourage others to get organized — and you do it with such flair!

I agree with getting the clean laundry out of the way!
But two things about my bedroom I just love: one, I have a lot of pillows. I know that can be a pain because everytime you make your bed you have to stack them up again, but they really are comfy for lying in bed and talking. Two, our candles. They’re soft, they’re romantic, and they make it into a retreat.
Your bedroom should be a retreat for you! And that means no kids, too, at least once they’re done nursing!

I always feel so much better in my room when the clutter is gone. Our room isn’t large, but our furniture is – there isn’t much wiggle room for the clutter. When it’s gone, though, I love walking in.
I also really liked the idea from one of the commenters about having music playing in there all the time so even when you just walk in for a few minutes, it’s a mental retreat. I need one of those.
I think I’m probably 3/4 done with the master bedroom. I’m feeling better each time I walk in. 🙂

One touch rule. Put things away rather than “setting them down here for a second”.
Candles.
Music.

I am working on my masterbedroom so I need to keep ontouch of the clothing to not get out of control. I want to go through and really declutter and get rid a lot of the stuff on my dresser. I bought a new bedspread and when it is on and all the pillows that go through it is so peaceful. I need to buy some wooden blinds too for my room.
I love my love lighting too from my touch lamps at night.
So a room still in work.

Being a newlywed, I have been praying about what I can do for our bedroom to make it warm and intimate for us. Right now I have plans to paint more warm colors in the room- the color is healing rain (a blue) accent with brown. Praying that our room is a place of healing (emotionally, physically, mentally, and spritiually) for both of us.
Thank you for the post.

Honestly this was a really good time to read this post for me. Even though at this point I think I made somewhat of a change, it is not what I truly want.
I want a haven which includes a nice chair with a table so I can read at night in the corner. I can not read in bed as I fall asleep within 5 min.
I want to walk in and feel relaxed, and not see certain things that seem to be distracting me from time to time. Maybe a headboard or actual bed frame would be nice! Our king size foam bed is on the floor. I have yet found a bed that I won’t have to use a step stool with me at 5’4.
We spend so much time in here if you think about it, yet we sometimes forget about this room.It is on my top list of things to accomplish, along with my children’s rooms which need a total rehaul with ideas on how in the world I am going to put bunkbeds in 2 rooms and have them feel like they have their own space in a tiny bedroom.
Thanks for bringing this subject up and sharing your personal space!

I took the time to dust my bedroom yesterday and it seemed to make a big difference. 🙂 Thanks for even that little push.
I thought I would share that I started a Thankful Thursday post on my blog. I think it’s really important for us to take the time to give thanks for the things to we have, and I’d love to read other people’s lists too. Check out my blog for the linky. 🙂

My bedroom is my sanctuary, too, Laura. For years it was the catch-all, most ignored room. Now it’s the prettiest room in my whole house and I love it.
Yours is really pretty.

I am fairly organized and I have no clutter but I don’t have anything that really “Makes the room a retreat”.
I think I would add nice warm touches to the space (wall hanging, fresh flowers..etc).
Great post!!

I’ve been working on our bedroom for awhile. What helped at first was the rule of NOTHING on tthe bed and the bed has to be made. It was such an improvement – at the time we still collected everything in there but my bed was clean. DH took the longest to train to not throw his uniform on the bed. For Christmas I found him a suit valet and it has worked wonders. Now it looks nice and tidy and as a bonus he has a place for his stuff.
Now I’ve progressed to the clutter issue – it is pretty much under control. This weekend I will remove whats left and take everything off the walls. This will leave it open for next month when I can finally go out and get my bedding. One that took me over a year to find. I can’t wait!

I love this idea of making your sleeping room a retreat! What a great thought.
I was also wondering if you could maybe someday think about a gift wrapping organization type post thingy. I know. Technical. You’re just kinda the go-to-gal…

I like to spritz my pillows with a lavendar linen spray either each day or every other day. It makes me feel so good when I lay my head on the pillows each night. Your bedroom looks so neat and cozy!

Quick tip for ya
I thought I would share something I do weekly with our master bedroom. I made Fridays my cleaning day for my bedroom. That way it is completely spotless and ready for a “weekend romance” I wash the linens, dust the nightstands, clean the mirrors, vacuum the carpet, clean out any lingering debris, and last but not least! I light a candle or two and freshen the room up.
I don’t mess with “sprucing” it up again until the following Friday, but doing it on Fridays just makes me look forward to my weekends!

Right now my room is the store-all for anything that doesn’t have a home … lots of paper clutter, too. It is also the hang out for our ps2 players. I want the stored clutter and the ps2 out of my room!
I love your room!
