Preparing for the winter load….

in Containerizing, Entrance, Kid Stuff

It has gotten so cold here in the mornings that I needed to start thinking about getting out the winter hats and mitts for my three kids. Normally I keep three baskets, one for each child, on shelves in the front hall closet to store these types of items. This system worked great for many years except last winter I noticed I was getting irritated with the lack of space for boots and shoes. I needed to come up with a new solution this winter……and here it is….

Three baskets, three kids….PERFECT!

Canadian Tire had these on sale last week. Each basket will hold each of the kids hats, mitts and scarfs….one drawer for each kid. I’m standing at the front door taking the picture so the kids have quick and easy access to the baskets on their way out the door each day. How does this remedy my boot/shoe dilemma? Well now I can get rid of the baskets in the closet and voila I’ve just freed up three extra shelves for boots/shoes. Yeah problem solved!

Ooooh la la! Very cool – don’t you love things that come in the number of kids you have?? 3 basket drawers = 3 kids! Love it! Oh, but where does the orgjunkie keep her winter gear?

I seriously wish you were my neighbor, I could really use some organizing help.

Ah yes my winter gear gets stored in the drawer in the closet organizer in the closet. Very handy indeed.

I just love you….you’re so smart and I want to be you when I grow up LOL

I have baskets for the kids at the front door too. When we get home in the afternoons, that is where they drop their hats, scarves and gloves…and in the mornings, there’s no more running around looking for them.

In the summer though, we use it for water bottles, hats, library books etc :)

Great way to stay organized :)

This is a very nice looking piece. What a great look and a great way to hide the “stuff”!

Hey, great idea. We don’t have the need here in South Mississippi for all the winter wear (we get a few days of winter on occassion….it missed us completely last year) but I like the storage idea for other things….like bookbags!

That is so nice! I wish I had a big enough entry way for something like that!

I have something similar in my hall closet. I have the rubbermaid “drawers” with each child’s winter hats, mittens, etc…, and one that my husband and I share. All that closet has is coats, the winter wear, and the school organization area. And one large Santa decoration that doesn’t fit anywhere else. I enjoy seeing all your organizational ideas!

ahhhh… the in and out the door dilemma. We don’t have an entryway conducive to an organized “landing zone” – a battle I have been waging for a few years now. I love your basket thing. Very nice! We have a small basket for shoes and another small basket for hats/gloves/etc. Not the best but it’ll do!

Thanks everyone for your comments. I guess I should have explained for my American readers. Canadian Tire is a big hardware/housewares type store here in Canada. Laura

ACK. I tried to talk my husband into buying that at CT this weekend, too. Now I’m going to show him the picture on your blog and SULK.

Canadian Tire?? Thanks for the explanation. I like this idea. I’ve seen things like that. I have a nice little bin in the floor of my small hall closet, but you’re right, when they are really used, it won’t be so tidy. I may use this idea. I like it. And since I only have 2 kids–I can hijack a drawer for myself.

Oh my goodness – when you said Canadian Tire my heart skipped a beat…like we had something familiar in common – not only did I know that you like to organize (I’m an organizing wannabee) but that you live North of the Border…I’ve been looking at those in the CT flyers for sometime now – great idea.

Hi Laura,

I found this archive while searching for winter gear solutions for my children, but I know this is from 2006. I’d love an update on your Winter Gear Storage Solutions in 2008!!! :)

Thanks,
Christie
