Thursday Thirteen

Banner by Emily at the Peanut Wagon

I’m thankful that when water started pouring through the ceiling of our basement last night:

1. that it came through right over top of the smoke detector
2. that smoke detectors go off when they get wet which gave us a warning
3. that the carpet only got a little bit wet before we got a bucket under it
4. that our water shut off valve is easily accessible
5. that no one was standing under it
6. that it didn’t happen during the day when hubbie wasn’t home
7. that I had already finished bathing the kids
8. that the hardware store was still open so hubbie could go buy the right parts
9. that hubbie was able to fix the leaky pipe and we didn’t have to call a plumber
10. that hubbie only cursed once
11. that the big hole now cut in the ceiling isn’t in the middle of my living room
12. that we keep bottled water in the house so the kids were able to brush their teeth
13. that I only had to go without water for one evening

and as a bonus:

14. that this morning I can once again flush the toilet

And just so you don’t think I’m making this whole thing up here is a picture of the beautiful hole:

I didn’t know smoke detectors go off when they get wet. I’m happy the hole in your ceiling isn’t any bigger and that you caught the leak early.

    Have a happy.

Ew… no fun on the water leak. It sounds like you are able to look back with a smile, though.

Okay, where did the flowing water come from? A burst pipe? If so, check your homeowner’s insurance policy. You might be covered, and it could mean a new ceiling! (We had a pipe freeze and burst…got the wall and ceiling both fixed. I was surprised we were covered!)

So glad you didn’t get it all in your heads and because the damages are so low – it might have been so much worse.

    My TT’s up too; it’s about cleaning… ;)

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. Mom2fur, turns out the pipe you see in the picture had a crack in it so hubby cut out that part and saudered a new piece in. Now all he has left to do is patch the ceiling but don’t ask me how he is going to do that cause I don’t want to know…lol.

I know what you mean about cracks in pipes. Years ago, plumbers/builders were allowed to use pipes with thin metal walls. We have those in my garage and they keep cracking…so we’re going to replace them. It’ll be expensive, but in the long run, worth it. Pipes are thicker nowadays, so at least the cracks won’t be a problem in the future. As far as your ceiling…good luck!

You forgot to add that you have a husband that is capable of fixing a broken pipe! Not sure if Scott would be able to!
(were you thinking of posting the pic on your blog when you took the picture? I find myself doing that all the time…wait kids…mom needs a pic for the blog!!)
